    Description: The U.S. aerospace industry is experiencing profound changes created by a combination of domestic actions and circumstances such as airline deregulation. Other changes result from external trends such as emerging foreign competition. These circumstances intensify the need to understand the production, transfer, and utilization of knowledge as a precursor to the rapid diffusion of technology. This article presents a conceptual framework for understanding the diffusion of aerospace knowledge. The framework focuses on the information channels and members of the social system associated with the aerospace knowledge diffusion process, placing particular emphasis on aerospace librarians as information intermediaries.

    Description: The nature and the location of cracking in a Ti-V-Cr-Al-Sn/SiC composite (Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn, in wt pct, reinforced by 33 vol pct of continuous unidirectional SCS-6SiC fibers) before and after unconstrained thermal cycling were investigated. The material was subjected to 10,000 thermal cycles between 300 and 550 C and samples were examined for cracks in the fiber, the matrix, and the fiber-matrix interface, using a back-scattered SEM. The Ti-based metal matrix composite was found to have a substantial amount of interfacial damage in the form of radial cracks, which formed first in the C-rich coating of the SiC fiber and then in the fiber-matrix reaction zone. The cracking was related to the fiber distribution, with consistently more cracking found between the more closely-spaced fibers within a given row, and more radial cracking in the outside fiber rows.

    Description: Monthly surveys were conducted on Kennedy Space Center for one year to determine densities of waterbirds within impounded salt marshes that were predominantly open water with little emergent vegetation. The objective was to assess the importance of these impoundments to waterbirds, particularly wading birds, which are species of special conservation concern. Water-level management for mosquito control and waterfowl provided habitat for an abundance of ducks, shorebirds, coots, and wading birds. Average densities throughout the year for these groups were 5.26, 412, 2.80, and 2.20 birds/ha, respectively. The majority of waterfowl were present during the winter. Shorebirds were most common during spring migration. Wading bird densities increased with declining water level. Due to the extensive alteration and development of coastal wetlands in central Florida, properly managed impoundments may provide important feeding areas for maintaining certain waterbird populations.

    Description: Time-accurate Navier Stokes computations were performed to study self-excited oscillatory shear layer behavior over a two-dimensional rectangular cavity and to gain insight into the vortex-acoustic coupling that sustains these oscillations. Results were obtained solving the full, unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations for Reynolds-averaged turbulent air flow past a cavity with L/d = 2. Conditions duplicated test conditions in experiments by Rossiter at Mach numbers varied from 0.6 to 1.2. The computational scheme was the USA 2D series code developed by Rockwell's Science Center with an algebraic turbulence model for the shear layer and recirculating region. Two physical conditions were simulated: an isolated cavity situated (1) in an infinite plane wall and (2) in an infinite channel with an opposing parallel wall. Computed results for (1) showed excellent agreement with Rossiter's measured amplitudes and frequencies. A tuned acoustic duct resonance effect was observed in (2), demonstrating a controlled change in the acoustic feedback mechanism and resultant amplification in computed oscillations.

    Description: The flow of scientific and technical information (STI) at the individual, organizational, national, and international levels is studied. The responses of U.S and European aerospace engineers and scientists to questionnaires concerning technical communications in aerospace are examined. Particular attention is given to the means used to communicate information and the social system of the aerospace knowledge diffusion process. Demographic data about the survey respondents are provided. The methods used to communicate technical data and the sources utilized to solve technical problems are described. The importance of technical writing skills and the use of computer technology in the aerospace field are discussed. The derived data are useful for R&D and information managers in order to improve access to and utilization of aerospace STI.

    Description: Results are reported from pilot surveys on the use of scientific and technical information (STI) by U.S. and NATO-nation aerospace scientists and engineers, undertaken as part of the NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. The survey procedures and the demographic characteristics of the 67 scientists and engineers who responded to the survey are summarized, and the results are presented in a series of tables and discussed in detail. Findings emphasized include: (1) both U.S. and NATO respondents spend around 60 percent of their work week producing or using STI products; (2) NATO respondents are more likely than their U.S. counterparts to use 'formal' STI products (like technical reports and papers) and the services of librarians and online data bases; (3) most of the respondents use computers and information technology in preparing STI products; and (4) respondents who had taken courses in technical communication agreed on the value and ideal subject matter of such courses.

    Description: The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol suite is a result of a world-wide effort to develop international standards for networking. OSI is formalized through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The goal of OSI is to provide interoperability between network products without relying on one particular vendor, and to do so on a multinational basis. The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a Government OSI Profile (GOSIP) that specified a subset of the OSI protocols as a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS 146). GOSIP compatibility has been adopted as the direction for all U.S. government networks. OSI is extremely diverse, and therefore adherence to a profile will facilitate interoperability within OSI networks. All major computer vendors have indicated current or future support of GOSIP-compliant OSI protocols in their products. The NASA Science Internet (NSI) is an operational network, serving user requirements under NASA's Office of Space Science and Applications. NSI consists of the Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) that uses the DECnet protocols and the NASA Science Network (NSN) that uses TCP/IP protocols. The NSI Project Office is currently working on an OSI integration analysis and strategy. A long-term goal is to integrate SPAN and NSN into one unified network service, using a full OSI protocol suite, which will support the OSSA user community.

    Description: The oxidation and aging behaviors of a continuous fiber SiC/Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al composite (SiC/Ti-15-3) were investigated. The aging characteristic of the composite were compared with those of the unreinforced Ti-15-3 matrix material, which was processed in the same manner as the composite. Various age hardened conditions of both the unreinforced matrix and the composite were evaluated by using optical microscopy, hardness measurements, and room temperature tensile tests (unreinforced matrix only). The Ti-15-3 material formed a thick surface oxide at temperature at or above 550 C when heat treated in air. The in situ composite matrix was softer than the unreinforced matrix for equivalent aging conditions. Both materials hardened to a maximum, then softened during overaging. The temperature at which peak aging occurred was approx. 450 C for both the in situ composite matrix and the unreinforced matrix. The room temperature elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength of the unreinforced matrix varied as a function of aging treatment and paralleled the hardness behavior. The modulus and tensile strength showed little response to aging up to temperatures of 300 C; however, these properties increased after aging at 550 C. Aging at temperatures above 550 C resulted in a decrease in the modulus and tensile strength. The failure strain was a function of the precipitation state and of the amount of oxidation resulting from the heat treatment. Aging in air at the higher temperatures (greater than 550 C) caused the formation of a thick oxide layer and reduced the ductility. Aging in vacuum at these temperatures resulted in significantly higher ductilities. Long term exposures at 700 C caused the formation of a large grain boundary alpha-phase which reduced the ductility, even though the specimens were heat treated in vacuum.
