Notes: Abstract Let ℭ be the class of frames satisfying the condition $$\forall x\exists y(Ry \wedge yRy)$$ (“every world can see a reflexive world”). LetKMT be the system obtained by adding to the minimal normal modal systemK the axiom $$M((Lp_1 \supset p_1 ) \wedge ... \wedge (Lp_n \supset p_n ))$$ for eachn ⩾ 1. The main results proved are: (1)KMT is characterized by ℭ. (2)KMT has the finite model property. (3) There are frames forKMT which are not in ℭ, but allfinite frames forKMT are in ℭ. (4)KMT is decidable. (5)KMT is not finitely axiomatizable. (6) The class of all frames forKMT is not definable by any formula of first-order logic. (7) 〈W, R〉 is a frame forKMT iff for everyx εW, the worlds thatx can see form a sub-frame which is not finitely colourable.

Notes: Abstract Extended generalized quadrangles (roughly, connected structures whose every residue is a generalized quadrangle) are studied in some detail, especially those which are uniform or strongly uniform. Much basic structure theory is developed, many examples are given, and something approaching characterization is given for many types.

Notes: Abstract Results are presented on an investigation of photons produced in multihadronic final states frome + e − annihilation at 35 GeV and 44 GeV center of mass energies. Scalling violation between 14 and 44 GeV is observed in inclusive photon spectra. Comparing inclusive π0 spectra with charged pion spectra it is found that the average π0 multiplicity exceeds the charged pion multiplicity scaled by factor of 0.5 by (16±5)% and (21±7)% at 35 and 44 GeV respectively. The excess can be attributed to isospin violating decays of hadrons. The η multiplicity is found to be 〈n η〈=0.64±0.09±0.06 at 35 GeV. With a significance of three standard deviations a signal from quark bremsstrahlung is observed. The measured charge asymmetry in hadronic final states, due to the interference between initial and final state radiation, ofA=−0.141±0.041 is in accord with QED expectations. An interference effect in the azimuth angle distribution of charged jets around the photon direction is observed for the first time.

Notes: Abstract It is well-known that some coastal currents such as the Florida Current have a recirculating region on their coastal side, while other currents such as the East Australian Current have no such region. Under the hypothesis that the form drag on a coastal current by an irregular coastal topography reduces the momentum transport of the current to a minimum for the given flow within the current, the hydraulic theory of coastal currents is used to explain this behaviour.

Notes: Abstract Small volume (〈15 km3) debris flows which were triggered by the 1929 earthquake postdate the period of high velocity turbidity current flow resulting from that earthquake. They thus could not have contributed sediment to the 1929 cable-breaking turbidity currents. Both the proposed “Grand Banks Slump” and another large scale debris flow also attributed to the 1929 event, are shown to be autochthonous. In light of the limited volume and late-stage timing of mass wasting on the upper Laurentian Fan in 1929, an additional mechanism must have existed which supplied further sediment to the turbidity current in 1929.

Notes: Abstract A procedure for micropropagation of endod (Phytolacca dodecandra) is described. BA at 0.44 μM produced 3.1 new shoots per expiant in six weeks using shoot tips. Nodal expiants, however, produced up to 4.7 shoots per explant on medium with 0.44 μM BA and 0.27 μM GA,. IBA at 0.49 μM induced 90% rooting with minimal callus. Plantlets were successfully transferred to the greenhouse and some staminate clones produced flowers after six months.

Notes: Abstract Effective assessments of aquatic ecosystem recovery require ecologically sound endpoints against which progress can be measured. Site-by-site assessments of end points and potential recovery trajectories are impractical for water resource agencies. Because of the natural variation among ecosystems, applying a single set of criteria nationwide is not appropriate either. This article demonstrates the use of a regional framework for stratifying natural variation and for determining realistic biological criteria. A map of ecoregions, drawn from landscape characteristics, formed the framework for three statewide case studies and three separate studies at the river basin scale. Statewide studies of Arkansas, Ohio, and Oregon, USA, streams demonstrated patterns in fish assemblages corresponding to ecoregions. The river basin study in Oregon revealed a distinct change at the ecoregion boundary; those in Ohio and Montana demonstrated the value of regional reference sites for assessing recovery. Ecoregions can be used to facilitate the application of ecological theory and to set recovery criteria for various regions of states or of the country. Such a framework provides an important alternative between site-specific and national approaches for assessing recovery rates and conditions.

Notes: Summary In this randomized, open-label trial, 24 subjects were studied. There were 12 subjects with essential hypertension and 12 normotensive controls who received, after an initial control period, 48 h of treatment with a transdermal estradiol patch or ketoconazole tablets every 8 h for six doses, or in combination. LHRH (100 μg) and ACTH (250 μg) were given at 48 h of each treatment. Each treatment was one week apart. In both normotensive and hypertensive men ketoconazole reduced adrenal and gonadal androgens, raised 11-deoxycortisol and 17 α-hydroxyprogesterone levels; blunted the rise of cortisol to ACTH and had no effect on the response of LH to LHRH. Transdermal estradiol raised serum estradiol levels, blunted the time to peak plasma concentration of LH to LHRH and produced a normal response to ACTH. Although baseline level of total and free testosterone and DHEA-S were lower in hypertensive men, the response of the pituitary (LH) to LHRH and adrenal axis with ACTH were similar in both normotensive and hypertensive men. Blood pressure was unaffacted by any of the treatment interventions in either normotensive or hypertensive men. Although ketoconazole or transdermal estradiol reduce androgens, there was no evidence that this reduction in androgens was involved with the short term regulation of blood pressure in hypertensive men.

Notes: Summary Ranolazine (RS-43285) has been shown to possess significant anti-ischaemic properties in a canine model of reversible myocardial ischaemia. The clinical efficacy of this new agent was assessed by a single blind, placebo controlled study of 14 patients with chronic stable angina. A 2 week placebo phase was followed by therapy with 30 mg and 60 mg of ranolazine tid for 2 weeks each. Graded, symptom limited treadmill exercise tests were performed at the end of each phase, 1.5 h (AM) and 7 h (PM) after the morning dose. An additional exercise test 1.5 h after the first dose of 30 mg was included to assess the acute dose response. In the AM study, the mean exercise time increased from 6.9 min (placebo) to 7.8 min after the first dose of 30 mg and to 8.2 min and 8.5 min respectively at the end of 30 mg and 60 mg phases. In the PM study, exercise time improved from 6.5 min (placebo) to 8.2 min and 7.8 min respectively at the end of 30 mg and 60 mg phases. The time to onset of angina showed a similar improvement. No significant changes were observed in the resting and peak exercise heart rates and blood pressure. This preliminary study suggests that ranolazine may significantly prolong exercise time in patients with stable coronary artery disease without altering heart rates and blood pressure.

Notes: Abstract Electron spectroscopy and thermodynamic modelling have been used to examine reactions at the Al/SiO2/SiC layered interfaces at 800 °C. The reactions have been examined as a function of oxide thickness. Three regimes have been isolated: (i) where there is no oxide present aluminium and SiC react to produce Al4C3 and free silicon; (ii) where there is a thin oxide present the initial products are aluminosilicates and amorphous alumina; however, once the SiO2 is consumed, Al4C3 emerges as a product; (iii) where a thick oxide is present only aluminosilicate and alumina are formed.
