    Notes: Data are presented demonstrating the room-temperature operation of an InP-InGaAs vertical cavity surface-emitting laser. The laser structure has an active region consisting of a 2-μm-thick bulk InGaAs layer and has an emission wavelength of 1.65 μm. Both the front and rear mirrors consist of quarter-wave stacks of four pairs of electron beam evaporated layers of Si and SiO2 which have been optimized for maximum reflectivity. The structures are characterized in the transmission mode using a pump beam from a Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 μm.

    Notes: Tungsten-doped YBa2Cu3O7−x superconducting samples are characterized with the help of resistivity, crystal structural, microstructural, density d, and critical current density Jc studies for doping concentrations varying from 0.00 to 0.14 mol % of WO3. It has been found that doping of WO3 has hardly any influence of Tc, whereas it seems that d and Jc are affected. d and Jc of the samples increase in the range 0〈WO3≤0.04, but above this range, both start decreasing. The maximum Jc obtained at 77 K and zero magnetic field in YBa2Cu3O7−x doped with 0.04 mol % of WO3 is 450 A/cm2. The lower concentrations (〈0.04 mol %) seem to improve the density, whereas higher concentrations lead to porous structure and also induce the formation of BaCuO2 and Y2Ba1Cu1O5 nonsuperconducting phase as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectral, and x-ray diffraction analyses. The x-ray diffraction analysis also showed no appreciable change in the lattice parameters with WO3 doping. It appears that the WO3 doping changes the microstructure of YBa2Cu3O7−x to influence its Jc.

    Notes: In order to better understand the causes of unprecedented damage to Mexico City during the 1985 September 19 Michoacan earthquake (Mw= 8.0) spectral ratios of teleseismic P-waves of this earthquake are studied with respect to those from five recent, large Mexican subduction zone earthquakes (7.0 ≤Mw≤ 7.7). The data are from vertical-component digital seismographs. It is found that the spectral ratios at stations in the NE quadrant are anomalously more energetic than those predicted by the ω−2 source model in the critical frequency range for Mexico City (0.3-0.7 Hz). The evidence is especially convincing for the spectral ratios with respect to the earthquakes of 1985 September 21 (Mw= 7.6) and 1986 (Mw= 7.0) since the data are available from several stations in the NE quadrant. The teleseismic P-wave spectral ratio in this quadrant with respect to the 1985 September 21 earthquake, in the critical frequency range, is close to the acceleration spectral ratio found in and near Mexico City (also in the NE quadrant). Velocity traces in the epicentral region of the Michoacan earthquake, obtained by integrating the accelerograms, also show oscillations with a frequency of about 0.4 Hz. Furthermore, a regression study of Fourier acceleration spectra at a hill-zone site in Mexico City demonstrates that the Michoacan earthquake was anomalously energetic in the city at the critical frequencies for an event of that magnitude and at that distance. If the data from 7.0 ≤Mw≤ 7.7 events can be extrapolated to estimate the ground motions from Mw≥ 8.0 earthquakes, then the evidence, supports an anomalously large body-wave radiation towards Mexico City between 0.3 and 0.7 Hz during the Michoacan earthquake. This anomalous radiation and the dramatic local amplification of seismic waves in the lake-bed zone of the city (∼ 10–50 times at frequencies between 0.3 and 0.7 Hz) appear to be the principal natural causes of the disaster. The anomalous teleseismic P-wave spectral ratios with respect to the earthquakes of 1985 September 21 and 1986 found in the NE quadrant are not observed in the data available from a small number of stations in the other quadrants. If this observation is true then it suggests a directional property to the anomalous radiation.

    Notes: Twenty one F1 hybrids involving three Triticum durum cultivars and eleven forms of T. timopheevi were backcrossed to their respective durum parents. Backcross fertility (BC1 grain set) of these sterile hybrids improved with the rise in temperature at the time of pollination. A mean temperature of less than 20 °C results in poor seed set while higher mean temperatures around 24 °C result in increased seed set. It is suggested that a large number of backcross seeds can be produced by pollinating these hybrids late in the season, i.e., after 20th of March in northern India.

    Notes: A comparative study has been made of the mucogenic epidermis of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio var. communis, and the three Indian major carps, Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhina mrigala: on the basis of epidermis structural organization, these species are easily differentiated.The epithelial cells in the superficial layer, as in most fishes, show secretory activity, evidenced by positive histochemical reactions, which is high in C. carpio var. communis, moderate in C. catla and low in L. rohita and C. mrigala. The epithelial cells in the underlying two or three layers also give positive reactions, though their intensity is relatively weak.The mucous cells in C. carpio var. communis are distributed in large numbers arranged in several superimposed layers in the outer regions of the epidermis, whereas in C. catla they are fewer in number and are widely separated in the surface layers as well as in the deeper layers of the epidermis; in both species the mucous cells appear rounded, large, and open on the surface by wide pores. In contrast, in L. rohita and C. mrigala the mucous cells are smaller, restricted mainly to the superficial layer, close together in a single row, and open on the surface by narrow pores. The overall density of mucous cells in L. rohita and C. mrigala, as in C. catla, is much lower than in C. carpio var. communis.In the epidermis of C. carpio var. communis there are a large number of mucous cells, and the few club cells are restricted to the deeper layers. In contrast, in the epidermis of the three Indian major carp the overall density of the mucous cells is much lower and the club cells are very numerous. It is suggested that the high density of club cells compensates an overall low density of mucous cells as an adaptation for an effective defence mechanism.Increased mucus production in the epidermis of C. carpio var. communis, as evidenced by a large number of mucous cells in outer regions and high secretory activity of superficial layer epithelial cells, is associated with increased precipitation of mud held in suspension, needed as an adaptation to the species’peculiar bottom-scooping habits.The varied density of the taste buds in the epidermis of the four carp is associated with their feeding habits.

    Notes: Summary The effect of mercury (Hg2+) in the absence and presence of methylmercury (CH3Hg+), cadmium (Cd2+), copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+) and calcium (Ca2+) on Nostoc calcicola Bréb. has been studied in terms of electrolyte leakage, NO3 − uptake and in vivo nitrate reductase (NR) activity to discover any possible correlation among such parameters under Hg2+ stress. Leakage of electrolytes from Hg2+-treated cyanobacterial cells was directly proportional to Hg2+ concentrations and exposure time. In comparison to NO3 − uptake, an about 60-fold slower rate of NR activity was observed in the untreated cultures, the former being five times more Hg2+-sensitive. A non-competitive synergistic interaction of Hg2+ with CH3Hg+ or Cd2+ and antagonistic with that of Ni2+ or Ca2+ has been observed for both the processes of NO3 − utilization. The antagonistic interaction of Cu2+ with Hg2+ in terms of NO3 − uptake and synergistic with respect to NR activity, has been attributed to the dual bonding preference of Cu2+ for cellular ligands. These findings suggest that (a) a statistically significant correlation exists among such parameters; (b) Hg2+ predominantly attacks the cyanobacterial cell membrane; (c) Hg2+ inhibits NO3 − utilization; (d) the presence of other cations increases or decreases the inhibitory actions of Hg2+.

    Notes: Summary A field trial was set up to examine the effect of green manuring, blue-green algae, and neem-cake-coated urea on a rice crop. Summer green manuring using Sesbania aculeata increased the crop yield. Inoculation of blue-green algae increased the rice grain yield when 60 kg N ha-1 was applied as prilled urea, but the increase in grain yield was greater when 60 kg N ha-1 was applied as neem-cake-coated urea. The results of the present study show that applications of green manure, neem-cake-coated urea, and blue-green algae are complementary and that the three treatments can be used together in the rice ecosystem. The green manure and the fertilizer treatments had no effect on the algal flora of the soil.

    Notes: Summary We studied the fungal communities associated with decomposing common leaf litter (Quercus leucotrichophora A. Camus) placed in five forests of Central Himalaya between the elevations of 330 and 2150 m. During the initial period of decay, conciding with the rainy season, a progressive increase in fungal counts and species diversity was observed in all forest sites. The sal forest site had a greater weight loss and supported the largest fungal densities, whereas the pine forest had a lower weight loss and the smallest fungal densities. Deuteromycetes were the dominant group in all the forest sites. Most of the species isolated during the annual cycle of the forest sites were of the “accidental type”. Species diversity and fungal counts on the common leaf litter were markedly affected by the environmental changes brought about by the native leaf litter. This effect was most obvious in the chir pine forest site where the leaf litter of the native dominant species was distinctly more resistant to decay than those of the other sites, making the soil environment of the site markedly different from that of other sites. The pattern of fungal-species changes with progressive decay of the substrate was similar to that suggested by the tolerance model of Connel and Slatyer.
