Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the Mexican state of Nuevo León a two year freeland investigation of wild turkeys(Meleagris gallopavo) was undertaken. The transition zone between the open woodland formation of the lower slopes and the oak-pine forests of the middle slopes on the luv side of the eastern Sierra Madre Mountains provide an optimum habitat for the turkeys. Data on population density and habitat preferences with the seasonal changes over the course of the year were collected. The results provide an insight into the social and reproductive behaviour of the turkeys as well as a measure of success in brood rearing. Relationships were demonstrated between management for hunting and protection of this species, which is still relatively common in certain areas.

Notes: Abstract The complete larval development of the porcellanid crabNeopisosoma negluctum Werding, 1986, was studied under laboratory conditions. At 27°C, the megalopa appeared after 9 days. The development consists of a transitory prezoea, two zoeal stages and a megalopa stage. The larvae exhibit telsonal features which places them in thePetrolisthes-group of porcellanid larvae. Larval morphology gives no additional support for the status ofNeopisosoma as an independent genus.

Notes: Abstract The investigation of alternating cycle-free matchings is motivated by the Jump-number problem for partially ordered sets and the problem of counting maximum cardinality matchings in hexagonal systems. We show that the problem of deciding whether a given chordal bipartite graph has an alternating cycle-free matching of a given cardinality is NP-complete. A weaker result, for bipartite graphs only, has been known for some time. Also, the alternating cycle-free matching problem remains NP-complete for strongly chordal split graphs of diameter 2. In contrast, we give algorithms to solve the alternating cycle-free matching problem in polynomial time for bipartite distance hereditary graphs (time O(m 2) on graphs with m edges) and distance hereditary graphs (time O(m 5)).

Notes: Abstract This paper shows how a queueing network model helped to uncover the causes of delay in a health center appointment clinic. Patients, clerks, technicians, doctors and nurses agreed that the clerical registration area was the major bottleneck in the system. Our first reaction was to simulate the system with special attention on the complex registration procedure. Time constraints on data collection and program development led us to a queueing network model and QNA, a software tool for analyzing queueing networks developed by Whitt. The queueing analysis showed the registration area was not the bottleneck and we conjectured that delays were due to scheduling problems. A preliminary trial in the clinic of a modified appointment system showed promise with a 20 minute reduction in average time in the system (based on a small sample). Although there were significant differences between features of the real system and assumptions in the queueing network model, the queueing network model yielded insight into the operation of the appointment clinic.

Notes: Abstract The electroplating of Zn−Ni alloy films from a chloride bath has been studied under different plating conditions, both in the absence and presence of a phenolic derivative. Under the conditions examined, the electrodeposition of the alloys belonged to the anomalous type. The morphology and composition of the deposits varied with current density, temperature, bath composition and additive concentration. The results show that the additive modifies the structure and surface topography of the deposits to a large extent and produces smoother deposits. The corrosion resistance of the alloys has been analyzed by means of salt-spray tests.

Notes: Abstract The influence of electrode porosity and temperature on the rate of electrochemical gas evolving processes (H2, Cl2, O2) was investigated. The experiments were carried out at electrodes with small pores (≤3 nm) and at smooth electrodes. To understand the results the hydrogen evolution process was used for detailed investigations. It was shown that the pores are only effective if the gas evolving process is an irreversible one (as with oxygen). The pores do not operate in the case of hydrogen and chlorine evolution. An explanation of this different behaviour is given. The temperature dependencies of the overvoltages of the chlorine and hydrogen processes are in contrast. An increase of hydrogen overvoltage with rising temperature is not yet fully understood. It can be stated, however, that the effectiveness of the hydrogen transport from the electrode surface into the bulk of solution decreases with increasing temperature.
