Notes: As nonmagnetic yttrium is substituted for terbium, TbAg changes from a conventional antiferromagnet into a complex magnetic system with components of both commensurate and incommensurate spin structures and bulk magnetic properties typical of spin-glass behavior for x≤0.5. We have carried out neutron diffraction experiments on polycrystalline samples with x=0.15, 0.5, and 1.0 to complement our earlier studies for x=0.3.1 For x=0.5, the system orders at T≈58 K into the mixed structure observed for x=0.3, but with a much sharper (1/2 1/2 0) peak. On cooling below 40 K the incommensurate peaks almost disappear, remaining only as low-intensity shoulders of the commensurate peak at the lowest temperature measured (T=4 K). Hysteresis is observed in the relative intensity of the two components of the structure between 45 and 55 K. For x=0.15, the system orders at T≈18 K into the two-component structure, but with an approximately constant intensity ratio and no evidence of hysteresis, similar to the behavior found for x=0.3. Thus, as the Tb concentration decreases, the relative stability of the commensurate and incommensurate structures appears to change. This balance between competing magnetic structures will be related to the spin-glass properties observed in this system.

Notes: This cubic pseudobinary compound with antiferromagnetic order and spin-glass properties below Tg (36 K) was studied by magnetization-vector measurements on a field-cooled (FC) polycrystalline sample disk rotated in various fixed fields (H). At 4.2 K, the FC-induced anisotropy field HK is seen to turn rigidly with the sample for all rotation angles (θ≤180°) even at H=15 kOe, and since the rotational magnetization follows HK very closely, it is deduced that HK 〉100 kOe. At 20 K, HK turns rigidly, but only below a threshold field, above which HK rotates up to some critical angle relative to H, where it remains as the sample continues to turn. Thus HK rotates frictionally relative to the sample. Nevertheless, it is found that its magnitude continues to exceed 100 kOe.

Notes: Abstract Tangkuban Parahu is an active stratovolcano located 17 km north of the city of Bandung in the province west Java, Indonesia. All historical eruptive activity at this volcano has been confined to a complex of explosive summit craters. About a dozen eruptions-mostly phreatic events- and 15 other periods of unrest, indicated by earthquakes or increased thermal activity, have been noted since 1829. The last magmatic eruption occurred in 1910. In late 1983, several small phreatic explosions originated from one of the summit craters. More recently, increased hydrothermal and earthquake activity occurred from late 1985 through 1986. Tilt measurements, using a spirit-level technique, have been made every few months since February 1981 in the summit region and along the south and east flanks of the volcano. Measurements made in the summit region indicated uplift since the start of these measurements through at least 1986. From 1981 to 1983, the average tilt rate at the edges of the summit craters was 40–50 microradians per year. After the 1983 phreatic activity, the tilt rate decreased by about a factor of five. Trilateration surveys across the summit craters and on the east flank of the volcano were conducted in 1983 and 1986. Most line length changes measured during this three-year period did not exceed the expected uncertainty of the technique (4 ppm). The lack of measurable horizontal strain across the summit craters seems to contradict the several years of tilt measurements. Using a point source of dilation in an elastic half-space to model tilt measurements, the pressure center at Tangkuban Parahu is located about 1.5 km beneath the southern part of the summit craters. This is beneath the epicentral area of an earthquake swarm that occurred in late 1983. The average rate in the volume of uplift from 1981 to 1983 was 3 million m3 per year; from 1983 to 1986 it averaged about 0.4 million m3 per year. Possible causes for this uplift are increased pressure within a very shallow magma body or heating and expansion of a confined aquifier.

Notes: Summary Bis(acetylacetonato)VOII,−CoII,−NiII,−CuII,−ZnII, −UO 2 II and tris(acetylacetonato)FeIII react with benzohydroxamic acid to yield the corresponding mixed ligand complexes as a result of displacement of one acetylacetone molecule. Intermolecular association may be the reason for six-coordination geometry around the metal ions. A t.g.a. study of the complexes shows, in most cases, initial loss of alcohol and water molecules associated with the complexes; subsequent decomposition steps are characterised by very sharp weight loss. The photochemical stability of the complexes has been studied. Intraligand excitation causes a decomposition in the case of FeIII and VOII-complexes but no detectable effect for CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, or UO 2 II -complexes.

Notes: Abstract Thermal decomposition of cellulose hyphan (CH) and its complexes with Lu, Gd, Nd and Sc under an atmosphere of air has been studied using thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results showed that, a different stages are accompanying the decomposition of (CH) and its complexes. These stages are affected by the presence of the metal ions. On the basis of the applicability of a non-isothermal kinetic equation, it was demonstrated that three main stages are involved in the decomposition processes. The activation energies of the different stages are calculated.

Notes: Abstract Through simultaneous measurements, it is possible to demonstrate the relation between sea swell and surface temperature as measured by a thermoradiometer onboard an aircraft. Thermodynamic measurements made on board the aircraft enable analysis of the interaction between swell and surface marine layer dynamics. The cospectral functions of vertical turbulent transfer for sensible and latent heat indicate large-scale dynamic structures which would seem to be initiated by inhomogeneities in the humidity field. A cross-spectral examination of temperature and humidity produces a structure that is common to both parameters and is caused by swell propagation. The data used here were collected during the TOSCANE-T experiment, whose aim was to validate remote sensing scatterometer techniques, by means of an instrumented aircraft designed for atmospheric research.

Notes: Abstract Thermal decomposition of pure basic zinc carbonate (BZC) and doped or mixed with iron ions were studied using TG, DTA and kinetics of isothermal decomposition. The TG and DTA investigations revealed that, the presence of iron ions retards the decomposition processes of (BZC). Also, the retardation effect increases on increasing of iron concentration up to 50 at.%. The curves of isothermal decomposition show the usual sigmoidal character. The decomposition velocity contsant (K) values are plotted vs. 1/T according to Arrhenius equation gave a plot of good straight lines with activation energies of 43.7, 48.2, 53.2 and 57.1 kJ mol−1 for pure (BZC) and incorporated with 1, 10, 30 and 50 at.% Fe2+ respectively. The products of the thermal decomposition of pure BZC and mixed with iron ions are characterized using X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, surface area determination and the surface porosity. These investigations showed that iron ions are effectively incorporated into zinc oxide lattice in the range of 30–50 at.%, which gave a ZnFe2O4 spinel.
