Notes: Abstract The photoassisted reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in aqueous suspensions of TiO2 under ultraviolet (UV) illumination has been studied by determining the amount of Cr(VI) photoreduced at different irradiation times, the mass of catalyst in suspension, the Cr(VI) initial concentration and the pH. Samples of wastes from metal-surface treatment industries have been used to test this photocatalytic procedure for Cr(VI) elimination in a real ease. It has been observed that the presence in these samples of certain species such as Fe(III) and Cr(III) at low concentrations can increase significantly the yield of Cr(VI) photoreduction. It is assumed that these cations act by maintaining the pH during the photoreduction process, preventing the alkalization by hydrolysis of the solution.

Notes: Abstract The nature of the products of the auxin catabolism mediated by both basic and acidic isoperoxidases has been studied. While indole-3-methanol is only a minor product of the oxidation of indole-3-acetic acid catalyzed by extracellular acidic isoperoxidases, it is the only product of the oxidation of indole-3-acetic acid catalyzed by two cytosolic basic isoperoxidases (EC 1.11.1.7) from lupin (Lupinus albus L.) hypocotyls. The putative indole-3-methanol formed by these latter isoperoxidases was isolated and then characterized by mass spectrometry and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. These results are discussed with respect to the diversity and compartmentation of the catabolism of indole-3-acetic acid in plant tissues.

Notes: Abstract When grown in the light and in a Tris-acetate phosphate medium, cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dang. can use the following l-amino acids as a sole nitrogen source: asparagine, glutamine, arginine, lysine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, serine, methionine, histidine, and phenylalanine, whereas, in the absence of acetate, the cells only used l-arginine. The utilization system in the acetate medium consisted of an extracellular deaminating activity induced by l-amino acids; it took between 10 to 30 h before the system appeared in cells previously grown with ammonium. This deaminase activity was nonspecific, required an organic carbon source for its de-novo synthesis, and was sensitive to high ammonium concentration and light deprivation.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden TG-Untersuchungen an aromatischen Polymethacrylaten mit heterocyclischen Seitenketten durchgefürt.
Notes: Abstract Thermogravimetric analysis of aromatic poly(methacrylates) containing heterocyclic side chains were carried out. The effect of the substituent introduced into the side chain on the thermal stability of the polymer was investigated. The kinetic parameters of thermal degradation process were analysed. Different thermogravimetric profiles were obtained depending on the structure of the side chain of the polymer.

Notes: Abstract We present high-resolution CCD images of a sample of spiral galaxies, in infrared photometric bands, obtained at the Cassegrain focus of the 1 m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope, La Palma. A decisive advantage of the linearity in these images is that we can effect a reliable separation of the light from bulge and disc. We describe possible applications of the results to determine the structure of the bulges.

Notes: Abstract We have undertaken a study of the physical conditions of the lonized gas within the starburst region of the galaxy NGC 253, using long slit spectroscopy at high spatial and spectral resolution. Our aim was to identify the appropriate parameters describing the dynamics of the gas and the excitation conditions, in relation with the starburst process. Non-gaussian line profiles and line spliting are clearly observed, indicating a complicated dynamical structure; furthermore, the zones presenting non-circular motions and localized outflow of gas have been spatially sampled at the seeing limit.

Notes: Abstract The future establishment of large telescopes at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM) has raised the necessity of designing a site-testing campaign, aimed specifically at selecting their emplacements, as well as characterizing correctly the local seeing behaviour and the fluctuations of the turbulent field in the area covered by the observatory. This paper describes the site evaluation programme to be carried out at the ORM during the next four years. The data obtained in this program will improve earlier tests in the critical areas of sub-are sec seeing, the size of the isoplanatic patch, the ‘efecto Caldera’ and suitability for infrared astronomy, among others.

Notes: Abstract The Canarian Observatories have become two of the most studies ones and are a privilleged place for astronomical observations. Since the sixties when, for the first time, Prof. Sánchez installed equipments to test the atmosphere at Observatorio del Teide (O.T., Tenerife), the campaigns carried out not only at Izaña but also at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (O.R.M., La Palma), have been numerous. In this contribution we review some results mainly concerning the atmospheric image quality and infrared properties. These results have been complemented with information from work already published. The suitability of the Canary Observatories for Astronomy has encouraged us to carry on a modern campaign of site testing, bearing in mind the future large telescopes that are being planned. The description of this campaign, which is now starting, is presented in the next contribution.

Notes: Abstract Evidence for circumnuclear starbursts in spiral galaxies can take the form of a blue excess near the nucleus, but more frequently (because of dust extinction)Hi or radio continuum emission. Such bursts are quite common, even in objects with no interacting companions. One consequence of a burst is to sweep gas outwards from the inner zone, so further bursts (and perhaps the initial one) need to be re-supplied with gas. This can be effectedvia a non-axisymmetric gravitational potential, not necessarily a bar, in the nuclear bulge. Searching for these non-axisymmetric features, we have performed two-dimensional photometry on CCD maps inB, V, R, I, andZ bands, for a set of galaxies which have undergone starburst activity, and we present here a set of results from that photometric programme.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of nylon 7 prepared by crystallization from glycerine were studied by both X-rays and electron microscopy. Electron diffraction proved that they consist of a twinned layeredα-structure with hydrogen bonds running parallel to their long dimension. Polyethylene decoration of such crystals showed that they are subdivided in folding domains so that both chain folding and hydrogen bonding take place along the same crystallographical planes.
