Notizen: Abstract Realized heritability (h 2) of resistance to dicrotophos in greenhouse whitefly,Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, was estimated from a laboratory selection experiment. Five generations of selection increased the LC50 approximately 13-fold. Estimatedh 2 of resistance to dicrotophos was 0.40 when calculated with the method of Tabashnik (1992) and 0.35 with the method of Tanaka & Noppun (1989). These results suggest that 35 to 40% of the total phenotypic variation in resistance was caused by additive genetic variation. For thirteen previously reported estimates ofh 2 of insecticide resistance in other insect pests, the mean was 0.29. The relatively highh 2 of dicrotophos resistance forT. vaporariorum is consistent with rapid resistance development in field populations.

Notizen: Abstract The HOL system is an LCF-style mechanized proof assistant for conducting proofs in higher-order logic. This paper discusses a proposal to extend the primitive basis of the logic underlying the HOL system with a very simple form of quantification over types. It is shown how certain practical problems with using the definitional mechanisms of HOL would be solved by the additional expressive power gained by making this extension.

Notizen: Abstract A model is proposed to describe the structure of large silicon clusters. The model is illustrated for the 60-atom cluster. A structure consisting of stacked, naphthalene-like planes is investigated. Computational evidence is given in support of this hypothesis, and it is shown to be consistent with experimental photofragmentation results.

Quelle: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Thema: Maschinenbau , Physik
Notizen: Abstract We examine model cluster structures by applying the simple Hückel method to spherically symmetric clusters whose atoms are constrained to occupy cubic (simple, body centered, or face-centered) and hop lattice positions. The Hückel orbitals are organized into energy “supershells,” many of which remain well separated even at 500–600 atom cluster sizes. The classical droplet model provides a good fit to cluster atomization energies, which then correctly extrapolate to the bulk cohesive energy predicted by tight-binding calculations. Energy level distributions for cubic lattices show that features characteristic of a tight-binding solid become fully evident in clusters containing as few as 100 atoms. A particular example is the high density of states found for the Fermi level of bcc clusters, vestiges of which might suffice to confer on suitable materials an enhanced electrical conductivity.

Notizen: Abstract Possible structures for Si10 cluster are considered using a tight-binding model and drawing on significant work done in the past. It is shown that the tight-binding parametrization, fitted to the bulk, is also valid for smaller systems. This model is found to essentially reproduce other published results, but requires much less effort thanab initio techniques—thus, allowing the study of a wide variety of structures and their ions. However, unlike classical force-field calculations, it yields information about the electronic structure of clusters. A new geometric structure for Si10 is found, which is not only of lowest energy, but which also matches the experimental photoelectron band gap and explains the experimental reactivity data. Because of the Jahn-Teller effect, the photoelectron spectrum is very sensitive to geometry. Also, ionization of the cluster alters the geometry slightly.

    Thema: Maschinenbau , Physik
Notizen: Abstract A computational study of 60-atom clusters having the general formula @C60-n Si n (n=1, 2, and 12) is presented. Based on total energies and calculated enthalpies of formation, the incorporation of silicon into buckminsterfullerene frameworks is destabilizing, but not prohibitively so. The synthesis of these “silaballs” by controlled pyrolysis of C6H6 mixed with compatible organosilicon compounds is considered. For the @C58Si2 system theortho (Si-Si bonded) isomer is less stable by about 40 kcal/mol than others in which the heteroatoms are separated.

Notizen: Abstract The dramatic rise in bank failures over the last decade has led to a search for leading indicators so that costly bailouts might be avoided. While the quality of a bank's management is generally acknowledged to be a key contributor to institutional collapse, it is usually excluded from early warning models for lack of a metric. This paper presents a new approach for quantifying a bank's managerial efficiency, using a data-envelopment-analysis model that combines multiple inputs and outputs to compute a scalar measure of efficiency and quality. An analysis of 930 banks over a five-year period shows significant differences in management-quality scores between surviving and failing institutions. These differences are detectable long before failure occurs and increase as the failure date approaches. Hence this new metric provides an important, yet previously missing, modelling element for the early identification of troubled banks.

Notizen: Abstract This paper documents an application of panel, or longitudinal data collection in the evaluation of a TSM (Transportation Systems Management) demonstration project. The project was a four-week demonstration of staggered work hours in downtown Honolulu during February–March 1988. The 4 wave panel survey elicited commuting experiences of approximately 2,000 downtown employees at two week intervals before and during the project. The sample involved both employees who participated in the project by shifting their work hours, and those who did not. The panel survey was augmented by floating-car observations of travel times on major routes into downtown Honolulu on the same four dates. The purpose of the analysis was to determine whether employee commute times were affected, and if so, how these changes were distributed among various employee segments. Two methods were used. First, travel time changes were estimated using paired t-tests. Second, regression equations were used to estimate project time savings as a function of trip length, route, and location of residence. Results show that travel time savings due to the project were typically small, less than ten percent. Nonparticipants experienced greater savings than participants, and some segments of participants experienced longer travel times during the project. The panel method proved to be an effective way to measure project travel time impacts and shows that the method is appropriate in short time applications.

Notizen: Abstract The Pleadings Game is a normative formalization and computational model of civil pleading, founded in Roberty Alexy's discourse theory of legal argumentation. The consequences of arguments and counterarguments are modelled using Geffner and Pearl's nonmonotonic logic, conditional entailment. Discourse in focussed using the concepts of issue and relevance. Conflicts between arguments can be resolved by arguing about the validity and priority of rules, at any level. The computational model is fully implemented and has been tested using examples from Article Nine of the Uniform Commercial Code.
