Notes: Abstract The influence of molybdenum oxide on the dispersion and activity of vanadium oxide supported on alumina was investigated. A series of MoO3 catalysts were prepared using monolayer V2O5/γ-Al2O3 catalysts by impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and oxygen chemisorption at −78 °C. The catalytic properties were evaluated for the vapour-phase oxidation of methanol. The addition of MoO3 to V2O5/γ-Al2O3 results in the decrease of dispersion of vanadia and also the activity for the oxidation reaction. However, the selectivity of formaldehyde was found to increase with MoO3 loading indicating that MoO3 created additional sites for partial oxidation reaction.

Notes: Abstract A series of Mo/MgO catalysts with loadings ranging from 2–12 wt% Mo were studied by oxygen chemisorption, X-ray diffraction and activity for thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction. The results obtained from the above measurements are compared with those on Mo/-γ-Al2O3. These results indicated that molybdenum is better dispersed on MgO. Hydrodesulfurization activity per g. Mo is found to be higher in the case of Mo/MgO. The higher activities are attributed to the increase in dispersion of Mo on MgO. A linear correlation is obtained between oxygen chemisorption and HDS activity. The parallelism between HDS and oxygen chemisorption is explained.

Notes: Abstract Pot studies were conducted to investigate the reasons for the lack of response to applied phosphorus (P) in six representative vertisols of semi-arid tropical regions of India having low available P status (2.8 to 7 ppm P). Studies with pearl millet and sorghum as test crops in two different seasons showed that these two crops responded significantly to the applied phosphorus in all the soils. The optimum P doses worked out from the regression of harvested biomass or grain on P doses, were found to be mostly above 27 ppm P in the range of 0 to 44 ppm P tried. The requirement of high doses of P for optimum yields was attributable to high P fixation capacities of these soils ranging from 43 to 75%. Regression analysis showed that P uptake by both the crops was significantly influenced by pH and P fixation capacity of the soils besides the applied and soil P. The differences between superphosphate and diammonium phosphate as sources of P were not consistent over crops or soils. Two consecutive applications of P resulted in marginal or no build up of soils' available P. Suggestions to manage the P fertilization problem of the semi-arid tropical vertisols on field scale were also made.

Notes: Abstract Influence of factors governing the soil-plantatmosphere system on components of water relations and yield was studied in two clones of rubber tree,Hevea brasiliensis, viz. RRII 105 and RRII 118. Clonal variations were evident in yield and yield components and associated physiological parameters in response to soil moisture status and meteorological factors. Observations made during different seasons indicatedvariations in yield are attributed to differences in plugging index and initial flow rates, to the major yield components and also variations in components of water relations as influenced by meteorological factors. Among the two clones, RRII 105 was found to be fairly drought tolerant compared to RRII 118. RRII 105 was found to respond well to dry weather through higher stomatal resistances, higher leaf water potentials, lowered transpirational water loss and lower relative transpiration ratios, while RRII 118 was susceptible to stress situations.

Notes: Abstract Spinodal decomposition in three alloys of nominal compositions 71Cu-27Ni-2Cr, 45Cu-45Ni-10Cr and 33Cu-52Ni-15Cr were studied by X-ray diffraction technique and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the first and third alloys are asymmetric in nature while the second is symmetric. The symmetric alloy was found to decompose faster than the asymmetric ones. The asymmetry of the side bands was found to be related to the proportion of phases in the alloy. Electron microscopic studies revealed that during coarsening the major phase increases its connectivity by isolating the minor phase.

Notes: Abstract Bostrychia tenella (Vohl.) J. Ag. and Caloglossa leprieurii (Mont.) J. Ag., two examples of species important for human consumption from estuaries in Asia, were studied with respect to spore formation and release with a long-term view to their mass cultivation. Plants were collected between January and December 1987 from three different regions of the Gautami Godavari estuary, India. Both species behaved rather similarly. Tetrasporophytic plants were present throughout the year, whereas carposporophytic plants were found only in certain months. Shedding of tetraspores was observed throughout the year, but with seasonal difference in their output. Carpospores were liberated from October to May when the material was available. Maximum shedding of carpospores and tetraspores was observed in December and January and the minimum number of tetraspores in August and carpospores in May. The maximum number of spores was liberated, when plants were submerged at 20% salinity.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of oxidation of unsaturated alcoholsviz. allyl, crotyl and cinnamyl alcohol by sodium bis[2-ethyl-2-hydroxy butanoato (2−)] oxochromate(V) Crv, has been investigated in 25% (v/v) aq. HOAc:HClO4. The order in [oxidant] and [substrate] was 1.0 and 0.7 respectively. The oxidation rate increased with increase in [2-ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid] (EHBA) and decreased with increase in the percentage of HOAc. The rate decreases slightly with increase in [H_]. The unsaturated alcohols exhibited higher reactivity compared to their saturated analogues. A mechanism involving the formation of a complex between Crv and alcohol which in turn disproportionates into products in a slow step is advanced to explain the kinetic results.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The micellar effet of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the initial stages of the reaction between (1) Fe(II) and p-benzoquinone, and (2) Fe(III) and hydroquinone have been investigated. In the former case acceleration was observed, the rate-[surfactant] profile showing a maximum. SDS has an inhibitory effect on the latter reaction. Kinetic analysis has been carried out using Berezin's approach.

Notes: Abstract Results of experiments on the adsorption of plutonium (IV) on alumina and their application to the recovery of plutonium from analytical waste solutions containing phosphoric-nitric acid are reported. Distribution ratios of plutonium (IV) between alumina and solutions containing varying concentrations of phosphoric acid and nitric acid are determined. The influence of various ions like UO2 2+, Fe3+, MoO4 2−, VO2+ and SO4 2− on the distribution ratio is evaluated. Saturation values of adsorption of plutonium (IV) on alumina and optimum conditions for loading and elution of plutonium on a column packed with alumina are described.
