Notes: Toroidal calculations on m=2 magnetic feedback are presented. These calculations are performed using a coupled Δ' formulation and show that the feedback can have a pronounced effect on the sideband (m=1 and 3) content.

Notes: A novel method for determining the local concentration of Al in the AlxGa1−xAs layer of AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs multiple quantum well structures is reported. By scanning a 10 A(ring) electron beam across the interface, the (200) dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image shows the contrast of the AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs multilayer since the intensity of the (200) diffraction is sensitive to the Al concentration. The line scan intensity profile of the (200) diffraction, along a uniform specimen region of known thickness, shows the intensity variation of the (200) diffraction and reflects the local content of Al in each region. The simulation of the nanodiffraction patterns produces a chart of the (200) diffraction intensity versus the Al concentration for the determination of the local change of the Al concentration. A molecular beam epitaxy grown AlxGa1−xAs-GaAs specimen (x=0.57 as determined from Raman spectroscopy) is tested and the dark-field STEM studies show two thin layers of x=0.46 at the 1/3 and 2/3 height level within every AlxGa1−xAs layer.

Notes: Abstract Spirochetes are structurally unique microorganisms found in the gastrointestinal tracts of most mammals. In an attempt to determine the ecological status of these bacteria, enumeration and distribution of morphologically distinct spirochetes were studied in the tracts of conventional laboratory rats. Five different types were seen to colonize infant rats between 19 and 26 days of age and subsequently to form stable communities in all 15 adults examined. Two types were found predominantly in lumen contents of the large bowel. The other three were consistently seen in the mucous blanket, attached to enterocyte surfaces or deep in the glands of the cecum and proximal colon. One type inhabiting the mucosal environment was also seen to pass into and through epithelial cells with no detectable host response. We conclude that spirochetes fulfill all the criteria for autochthonicity to the rat gastrointestinal tract.

Notes: The modified multislice theory [Wang (1989). Acta Cryst. A45, 193-199] has been employed to calculate the electron reflection intensity with and without considering the plasmon diffuse scattering in the geometry of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). It has been shown that the inelastic scattering can greatly enhance the reflectance of a surface, depending critically on the incident conditions of the electrons. At some incidences, the inelastic resonance reflection is enhanced, which is considered as the 'true' surface resonance state. This happens within a very narrow angular range (〈1 mrad). For 'true' resonance states, the inelastic intensity is much stronger than for other conditions as shown both theoretically and experimentally. The enhancement of the reflection intensity may not be the proper criterion for identifying the 'true' surface resonance. Besides the surface plasmon peaks, an 'extra' peak, located at 4.5 eV, is observed in the reflection electron energy-loss spectroscopy (REELS) study of the 'true' resonance of GaAs (110) surface. This is considered as a characteristic of the resonance propagations of the electrons along the surface and may result from the generation of resonance radiation.

Notes: The resolution function of an X-ray triple-crystal diffractometer on a rotating-anode source has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Three different experimental configurations were used, with perfect germanium, distorted germanium and pyrolytic graphite as monochromator and analyser, leading to changes in the resolution of two orders of magnitude. The results are compared with a Gaussian description of the resolution function and it is found that this describes the width of the central part with an accuracy of better than 25%. The wings of the resolution in the high-resolution mode show the effect of the non-Gaussian resolution elements but these are reproduced by a full numerical convolution theory of the resolution function.

Notes: Abstract We have carried out a comprehensive study of the static and dynamic spin-spin correlations of Mn x Zn1−x F2 in a magnetic field. Samples withx=0.75 andx=0.5 have been studied. This system exhibits behavior closely related, if not identical, to that of the Random Field Ising Model (RFIM). An additional feature of Mn x Zn1−x F2 is that it exhibits an easily accessible bicritical point; thus one can study the changeover from the RFIM to the uniformXY model with a transverse random field. Quite generally, the instantaneous spin-spin correlations in a field are described by a combination of Lorentzian, Lorentzian-squared and delta function terms the latter corresponds to the long range order (LRO) component. In the Ising phase one finds history dependent behavior as discussed previously. In theXY phase, except very near the spin-flop boundary, one finds ergodic behavior withXY LRO and Lorentzian squared Ising fluctuations. Rather complicated instability effects are found all along the spin-flop boundary. Further, when one establishes LRO in theXY phase and lowers the field through the spin-flop value, one obtains a LRO Ising state in thex=0.75 sample whereas one obtains the field-cooled domain state in thex=0.50 sample. This dramatic difference in behavior is not understood. Our results on the RFIM aspects of the problem are consistent with our previous studies. The transition is dominated by the metastability effects with an underlying equilibrium transition which is either first order or weakly second order (β≈0). The underlying transition manifests itself directly in measurements of the dynamic response nearT N (H). From the data above the metastability boundary we deduce for the static correlation length exponentv=1.4±0.3 in good agreement with theory. We find for the RFIM crossover exponent φRF=1.5±0.2 where the errors represent the spread in values obtained from different techniques. Finally, we have determined in detail the field-temperature phase diagram of thex=0.5 sample including the critical behavior along the spin-flop line; the latter transition appears to be second order for an extended region.
