Notes: Transparent dimethyl siloxane network polymers with refractive indices near 1.40 may be applied to fused silica fibers (n = 1.458) as they are drawn to produce plastic-clad silica (PCS) optical fibers. The evanescent tail of the light energy propagating in the core of such fibers extends into the silicone cladding, where it interacts with chemical species present in the polymer. If the silicone is doped with a dye, the absorption spectrum or fluorescence spectrum of the dye is reflected in the transmission spectrum of the fiber. Further, if the dye changes its absorption spectrum or fluorescence spectrum as a result of diffusion of a chemical species into the silicone, the change is detectable in the fiber output. The polymer material properties which determine the performance of these sensors are described, along with examples of sensors for ammonia and oxygen which utilize either color changing or fluorescent dyes.

Notes: The liquid SIMS mass spectra of silver acetate dissolved in a glycerol matrix is discussed, with emphasis on the formation of a ‘silver mirror’ on the surface of the glycerol droplet owing to reduction of the silver acetate. Silver clusters containing up to three silver atoms have been observed from this mirrored surface; Ag3+ cluster ions are not observed in the spectrum when conditions are such that the mirror is not formed. For example, use of a slightly oxidizing matrix (o-nitrophenyl octyl ether or m-nitrobenzylalcohol) prevents formation of the ‘mirror’; only Ag+ is sputtered from this surface.

Notes: The Raman and infrared spectra of pimelic acid, (CH2)5[COOH (D)]2, and its potassium salts in aqueous solution were recorded from 4000 to 200 cm-1. The two salts belong to the Cs symmetry point group whereas the acid has C1 symmetry. These results are similar to those found previously for lower alkanedloic acids with an odd number of carbon atoms, namely glutaric acid, (CH2)3(COOH)2, and malonic acid, CH2(COOH)2.

Notes: A non-parametric method for supervised pattern recognition is presented. The method is of the class modelling type, meaning that a classification rule is developed for each class, using the dissimilarities between the objects of the class. The dissimilarities between the objects within a class are related to the distances between all pairs of training objects. As distance metric, a measure is proposed that takes the correlation between the interval-scale variables into account, and that moreover can be used for mixed types of variables. The classification rule is based on the construction of a boundary in the measurement space. For the determination of the class boundary, several strategies are proposed and compared. The performance of the technique is evaluated on the basis of several data sets. Comparison with the class modelling technique UNEQ shows its usefulness for practical application.

Notes: The pipeline mixing of two fluid streams by turbulent jet injection normal to the pipeline has been studied theoretically and experimentally. A simple scaling law for the second moment of the tracer concentration within the pipeline is proposed for the first fifteen pipe diameters down-stream from the injection point. The similarity solution is derived by assuming that the tracer diffuses in a weak compound jet moving parallel to the pipeline axis. The theoretical results are correlated with all of the available experimental measurements. The results indicate that the second moment of the tracer concentration decreases with increasing jet momentum and distance from the injection point such that M = 0.25. (lm/D)-2 (x/D)-4/3.

Notes: A laser capillary spectrophotometric technique (LCS), based on the method of Verhoff et al. (1969, 1977), is developed for the rapid and accurate determination of the bivariate drop size-concentration distribution for reactive liquid-liquid dispersions. The method employs a precision bore capillary, through which a sample is drawn from the mixing vessel by a vacuum pump. An appropriate light source is used to distinguish between the slugs of dispersed phase and continuous phase as the sample passes by two detection points in the capillary. The optical device is designed to measure drop size by the difference of light refraction between the two phases and drop concentration by the light absorbance of the organic phase in the drop. The new technique can automatically measure drop-size and drop-concentration distributions of thousands of drops within a few minutes. This technique can provide important information on the state of a reactive dispersion in situ and can provide information on the influence of dispersed-phase mixing effects on mass transfer and/or reactions in liquid-liquid dispersions. Further, the LCS technique provides the capability for on-line monitoring and control of units processing liquid dispersions.

Notes: Although coupled liquid chromatographygas chromatography (LC-GC) was first demonstrated ten years ago, only in the last few years has there been a sudden surge of interest in the technique. Approximately 70% of the total number of LC-GC applications have been published in the last two years (1987-88) alone. This review categorizes LC-GC publications into four main application areas: fossil fuels, foods, environmental samples, biologiical/pharmaceutical samples, and miscellaneous samples. Multidimensional separations carried out using other coupled-column chromatographic techniques (such as supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with GC, and on-line trace enrichment-GC) have also been included in this review.

Notes: A procedure has been developed for the automated determination of aflatoxin M1 in decreamed milk, by using on-line dialysis and subsequent trace enrichment on a reverse phase column. After foreflush to the analytical column the determination is performed with fluorescence detection. Fully automated analysis within 10 min is thus possible with reproducible dialysis recoveries above 50% (CV is 3.3%, n = 20) and detection levels of 50 ng/kg.
