    Notes: Abstract The structures of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane-1,2-diol and its 1∶2 molecular inclusion complex with dmso have been elucidated by X-ray crystallography from single crystal diffraction data. Crystals of the host, compound I, are monoclinic, space groupP21/n, witha=17.669(6) Å,b=6.144(6) Å,c=17.873(6) Å,β=92.67(3)°,z=4. Crystals of the clathrate, compound II, are triclinic,P¯1, witha=9.138(5) Å,b=18.384(6) Å,c=18.496(3) Å,α=61.16(2)°,β=83.22(3)°, γ=88.06(3)°,Z=4. Both structures were solved by direct methods and refined to finalR values of 0.072 and 0.107, respectively. Compound I is partially disordered and its packing is governed by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Compound II is characterized by crossing channels which accommodate the guest dmso molecules. The thermal properties of the latter compound have been characterized by DTA and TGA thermograms.

    Notes: Abstract The structures of the 1∶2 molecular complexes oftrans-9,10-dihydroxy-9,10-diphenyl-9,10-dihydroanthracene with 4-methylcyclohexanone (1) and with 2-methylcyclohexanone (2) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal data are as follows: Compound (1):P22/c,a=8.838(2) Å,b=8.92(1) Å,c=20.879(8)=Å,β=98.67(2)°,V=1627(2) Å3,Z=2 andR=0.062 for 2201 unique MoKα reflections; Compound (2):P¯1,a=8.917(3) Å,b=9.900(2) Å,c=11.250(4) Å,a=68.72(2)°,β=64.39(3)°, γ=74.86(2)°,V=828.1(5) Å3,Z=1 andR=0.098 for 2563 unique reflections. Both inclusion compounds exhibit O-H⋯O=C hydrogen bonding interactions. The thermal properties of these compounds have been characterized by DTA and TGA thermograms.

    Notes: Abstract Alkane hydrogenolysis on Re/Al2O3 catalysts has been studied by a thermal cycling procedure. Because deactivation occurs during heating and is then reversed at higher temperatures, rates are much faster during cooling than during heating. Rates during subsequent thermal cycles are reproducible. Re is 104 times more active than Pt for hydrogenolysis.

    Notes: Abstract The hydrogenolysis of propane and of n-butane on Pt/Al2O3 and Pt-Re/Al2O3 catalysts has been studied using a stepwise temperature programme which reveals clearly the effects of carbonaceous deposits on both rate and product selectivities. On Pt/Al2O3 catalysts, deposits formed during the reaction of n-butane suppress C2H6 formation and enhance C3H8 formation, due solely to a decrease in the probability of central C-C bond fission. On Pt-Re/Al2O3, such deposits have little or no effect on product selectivities.

    Notes: Summary “Corner's rules” for plant form relate the degree of branching to branch diameter, and branch diameter to leaf or inflorescence size. We report the first interspecific test of these rules for inflorescence size and branch diameter. We derived a simple corollary of Corner's rules; since leaf size and inflorescence size are both correlated to branch thickness, they may be correlated to each other. This corollary holds for Leucadendron and Protea (Proteaceae), and in certain other taxa in the Asteraceae, Bruniaceae and Pinaceae which also have leaves and reproductive structures on the same shoot. For such taxa this implies that selection for aspects of floral display (inflorescence size, pollination type) may also be expressed at the level of leaf size and vice versa. This has implications for many aspects of botany and also points to the importance of the co-ordinating role of plant architecture for aspects of plant form.

    Notes: Summary Leucospermum conocarpodendron (L.) Buek (Proteaceae) seedlings were excavated several months after a fire in Cape fynbos. Seedlings under burnt parental skeletons had short hypocotyls (mean 25 mm) indicating passive dispersal whereas seedlings in the open were more deeply buried (mean 48 mm) by ants. Soil nutrient concentrations at the site of germination were negatively related to depth of burial and distance from parent. Ant dispersal resulted in seedlings emerging in soils with lower nutrient concentrations than passively dispersed seeds. Tissue analysis supported the soil results with lower P content in seedlings from open (ant dispersed) sites. Seedling survival in the first year of establishment was also lower in open sites, but not significantly so. However seedlings were slightly taller in the open. The results of this study, the first on naturally occurring intraspecific variation in myrmecochory, strongly contradict current explanations for the high incidence of myrmecochory in nutrient poor environments.

    Notes: Abstract Increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases are expected to contribute to a global warming. This paper examines the potential implications of a climatic change corresponding to a doubling of atmospheric concentrations of CO2 on crop production opportunities throughout Ontario, a major food producing region in Canada. The climate is projected to become warmer and drier, but the extent of these shifts are expected to vary from region to region within Ontario. The effect of this altered climate on crop yields and the area of land capable of supporting specific crops varies according to region, soil quality and crop type. Most notable are the enhanced opportunities for grains and oilseeds in the northern regions, and the diminished production prospects for most crops in the most southerly parts of Ontario.

    Notes: Summary In order to identify specific cis-acting elements which regulate the expression of the divergent Cab22R and Cab22L genes of Petunia, we conducted systematic mutational studies of the 1 kb intergenic promoter region. Sequence analysis revealed three GATA box sequence repeats positioned between the TATA and CAAT box elements. These GATA elements are conserved in corresponding promoter regions of all LHCII Type I Cab genes in Petunia and other dicotyledonous plants we have examined. Sitespecific mutations in the CAAT box and the GATA box elements of the Cab22R promoter resulted in 8-fold and 5-fold reductions in Cab22R transcript levels respectively. A deletion of 52 bp, adjacent and upstream from the CAAT box (-92 to- 145) in the Cab22R promoter reduced transcript levels 20-fold. This deletion contains a region of 13 pb which is conserved between many Petunia Cab genes. These results indicate that the quantitative expression of the Cab22 promoters is regulated by multiple cis-acting elements including CAAT and GATA box elements as well as sequences located between -92 and -145. The deletion of the region between -92 and -145 is partially compensted by homologous sequences present in the adjacent divergent promoter Cab22L.

    Notes: Summary Escherichia coli mutT strains are strong mutators yielding only A · T → C · G transversion mutations. These are thought to result from uncorrected (or unprevented) A · G mispairings during DNA replication. We have investigated the interaction of mutT-induced replication errors with the mutHLS-encoded postreplicative mismatch repair system. By measuring mutation frequencies in both forward and reversion systems, we have demonstrated that mutTmutL and mutTmutS double mutators produce no more mutants than expected from simple additivity of the frequencies in the single mutators. We conclude that mutT-induced A · G replication errors are not recognized by the MutHLS system. On the other hand, direct measurements of mismatch repair by transfection of bacteriophage M13mp2 heteroduplex DNA as well as mutational data from strains other than mutT indicate that the MutHLS system can repair at least certain A · G mispairs. We suggest that A · G mispairs may exist in several different conformations, some of which are recognized by the MutHLS system. However, the A · G mispairs normally prevented by the mutT function are refractory to mismatch repair, indicating that they may represent a structurally distinct class.
