    Notes: Abstract Urine samples from 197 Arkansas children were analyzed for eight chlorinated phenols and four chlorinated phenoxy herbicides by using a new procedure that combined gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. With the detection limit of 1 part per billion (ppb), six of these pesticides were detected in more than 10% of the samples. 2,5-Dichlorophenol (a metabolite ofp-dichlorobenzene), and pentachlorophenol were detected in 96% and 100%, respectively, of the children's urine at median concentrations of 9 ppb and 14 ppb, respectively. 2,4,5-Trichlorophenol was detected in 54% of the children's urine at a median concentration of 1 ppb. One trichlorophenol and three other dichlorophenols were found in 3% to 27% of the samples. The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid was observed in 20% of all samples. The concentrations of all analytes are reported as background or reference levels for use in future studies. The finding of 2,5-dichlorophenol as a ubiquitous contaminant merits further study.

    Notes: Summary Acclimation of wild radish plants to a simultaneous combination of SO2 fumigation and decreasing nitrate availability was investigated. Plants were grown for 24 d under continuous daytime (10h) exposure to 0 or 0.4 ppm SO2 and were grown in a nutrient solution with stable nitrate concentrations of 100 μM for the first 15 d, 50 μM from day 15 to day 19, and 25 μM from day 19 to day 24. Analysis of relative growth rates (RGR) showed that radish plants responded rapidly to changes in nitrate availability and that SO2 treatment affected those responses. Shoot RGR of plants from both treatments and root RGR of control plants showed rapid declines and subsequent recoveries in response to decreasing nitrate availability. Root RGR of SO2-treated plants declined rapidly in response to decreased nitrate availability, but did not recover as quickly or completely as root RGR of control plants. Analysis of specific leaf weights and tissue nitrogen concentrations showed that control plants had significantly higher amounts of nitrogen in tissues after nitrate availability was lowered, and had higher rates of nitrate uptake in comparison to SO2-treated plants; especially when nitrate availability was highest. Furthermore, control plants had temporarily higher rates of root respiration in comparison to SO2-treated plants, suggesting that control plants temporarily allocated more resources to physiological processes occurring in roots, such as nutrient uptake. Although SO2-induced changes in growth and resource allocation of plants were relatively small, it was probable that SO2 treatment of radish plants affected plant nitrogen balance, and subsequently affected the ability of plants to respond to decreased nitrate availibility, by affecting resource partitioning to nitrate uptake and root growth.

    Notes: Abstract Gabbroic enclaves ejected during the current eruption phase (A-1) and during the latest prehistoric eruption phase (A-2) of Arenal Volcano show systematic variations in texture, mineralogy and composition as a function of host rock chemistry and timing of eruption. The most differentiated enclaves occur in the more differentiated A-2 lavas. Enclaves in the A-1 volcanics are consistently less evolved. Within the current A-1 eruption, the most mafic enclaves are amphibole-bearing rocks that were erupted during the first 2–3 years of activity (1968–1970). These enclaves occur in the most differentiated A-1 volcanics and are not in equilibrium with their host rocks. They crystallized from a hydrous melt that was slightly more mafic than anything erupted during the current cycle. We interpret the enclaves as sidewall crystallization products of a melt, possibly a high-alumina basalt, that was immediately parental to the A-1 lavas. Enclaves that occur in A-1 rocks erupted after 1970 and all of the A-2 enclaves are amphibole-free and less mafic than the early A-1 enclaves. Their chemistry suggests that they formed during the early to intermediate crystallization of their host lavas. None of the enclaves contain minerals that might have equilibrated with a primary, mantle-derived melt. Geothermometry is consistent with geochemistry, with amphibole-bearing A-1 enclaves yielding the highest pyroxene temperatures (ave. 1090° C) and A-2 enclaves the lowest (ave. 1030° C). Geobarometry suggests mid- to upper crustal depths for the crystallization of all enclaves. The enclaves are cognate and reflect pre-eruptive crystallization of Arenal magmas. They record evolution from a hydrous, basaltic magma to the drier basaltic andesites that characterize the current eruption. Volatiles appear to have been lost due to depressurization during the slow ascent of the magmas through the upper levels of the crust following the initial explosive eruption. Volatile loss and depressurization resulted in the destabilization and the progressive resorption of amphibole. The A-2 lavas may represent the long-term fractionation products of basaltic andesite magmas similar in composition to the A-1 lavas. Anorthitic plagioclase, commonly thought of as a phase stabilized by high Ca/Na and high water pressure, continued to crystallize in a system with relatively low Ca/Na and which had dehydrated and/or depressurized to the point at which amphibole was no longer stable. This suggests that compositional characteristics other than high Ca/Na or high water content may have stabilized the anorthite in the basaltic and basaltic andesite melts at Arenal. We speculate that the high-alumina content of the Arenal magmas may be the stabilizing factor.

    Notes: Abstract This research considers the question of changing environmental values within the leadership of firms responsible for the management of pollution as an unwanted byproduct. Information was obtained from a pair of surveys mailed to the chief executive officers (CEOs) of the 50 largest firms listed within the mining and manufacturing directories of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming in 1976 and again in 1986. The authors found that industry CEOs were more supportive of environmental concerns in 1986 than 1976, suggesting that ecological values have become institutionalized to some extent. Yet, there is little indication that this attitudinal shift in environmental concern among CEOs has been accompanied by a willingness to spend a larger proportion of the company budget on pollution control or to improve working relationships with federal regulatory officials.

    Notes: Abstract A full-length cDNA encoding NADH-dependent hydroxypyruvate reductase (HPR), a photorespiratory enzyme localized in leaf peroxisomes, was isolated from a λgt11 cDNA library made by reverse transcription of poly(A)+ RNA from cucumber cotyledons. In vitro transcription and translation of this clone yielded a major polypeptide which was identical in size, 43 kDA, to the product of in vitro translation of cotyledonary poly(A)+ RNA and subsequent immunoprecipitation with HPR antiserum. Escherichia coli cultures transformed with a plasmid construct containing the cDNA insert were induced to express HPR enzyme activity. RNA blot analysis showed that HPR transcript levels rise significantly in the first eight days of light-grown seedling development. This closely resembles the pattern seen for HPR-specific translatable mRNA. DNA blot analysis indicated that a single HPR gene is likely present per haploid genome. Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed an open reading frame of 1146 bases which encodes a polypeptide with a calculated molecular weight of 41.7 kDa. The derived amino acid sequence from this open reading frame is 26% identical and 50% similar to the amino acid sequence of the E. coli enzyme phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase, which catalyzes a similar reaction and functions in a related pathway. Statistical analyses show that this similarity is significant (z〉10). The derived amino acid sequence for HPR also contains the characteristics of an NAD-binding domain.

    Notes: Abstract This study examines the links between 31P solidstate NMR studies of aluminum phosphate minerals and their crystallographic structures. We found that 31P isotropic chemical shift values, δiso, carry little information about mineral structures. There seems to be no relation between the chemical shift anisotropy, Δδ=δ33−δ11 (δ33〉δ22〉 δ11), and indicies of phosphate-tetrahedra distortion. 31P1H heteronuclear magnetic dipole interactions, on the other hand, carry important information about hydrous phosphate mineral structures, information that should prove to be quite valuable in studies of phosphate adsorbed on mineral surfaces. This interaction can be measured through a variety of qualitative and quantitative experiments. It appears that spin diffusion is so rapid that subtle differences in hydrogen-bonding environments cannot be resolved.

    Notes: Abstract High-resolution 27Al solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy indicates that aluminum in taranakite is probably restricted to six-coordinate sites. High-resolution 31P solid-state NMR spectroscopy reveals that phosphate groups exist in two environments in taranakite. The rate of 1H-induced dipolar dephasing of the 31P signals in cross-polarization, magic-angle-spinning NMR spectra of taranakite suggests that one or more oxygens of one of two phosphates are directly protonated. The same experiments suggests that the oxygens of the second form of phosphate are not directly protonated but may be hydrogen-bond receptors. The ratio of protonated phosphate to non-protonated phosphate, as measured from 31P single-pulse excitation, magic-angle-spinning spectra, is approximately one to three.

    Notes: Abstract This is a report of 27Al magic-angle spinning, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of 5- and 6-coordinate aluminum in the aluminophosphate minerals augelite and senegalite. We have determined the quadrupolar coupling constants, asymmetry parameters and chemical shifts corrected for quadrupolar-induced shift for both aluminum coordination sites in each mineral. The quadrupolar coupling constants are significantly less in senegalite than in augelite. Structural analysis (viz., longitudinal- and shear-strain of the aluminum coordination polyhedra; coefficient-of-variation for both Al-O bond lengths and 〈O-Al-O bond angles) shows that both 5- and 6-coordinate aluminum sites in senegalite are less distorted than in augelite.

    Notes: Synopsis Butterflyfish species richness increases along a longitudinal circumtropical gradient from lows of 3–5 species in the tropical Atlantic and Eastern Pacific to highs of 40 or more in the Indo-Pacific region. Biomass of the fishes increases as species richness increases, and single-site (alpha) diversity increases as does between-site (beta) diversity. There is no evidence of density compensation in richer communities, but at the level of islands and regions, habitat breadth diminishes as species richness increases. Morphologically, species are added to communities both at the boundaries and in the middle of morphospace.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of seawater acclimation and adaptation to various salinities on the energetics of gill and kidney of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was examined. Smolts and non-smolts previously reared in fresh water were exposed to a rapid increase in salinity to 30 ppt. Plasma osmolarity, [Na+], [Cl−], [K+] and [Mg++] increased in both groups but were significantly lower in smolts than non-smolts. Gill Na+, K+-ATPase specific activity, initially higher in smolts, increased in both groups after 18 days in seawater. Kidney Na+, K+-ATPase specific activity was not affected by salinity in either group. Gill and kidney citrate synthase specific activity was not affected by seawater exposure in smolts but decreased in non-smolts. In a second experiment, Atlantic salmon smolts reared in fresh water were acclimated to 0, 10 or 30 ppt seawater for 3 months at a temperature of 13–14°C. Gill Na+, K+-ATPase was positively correlated with salinity, displaying 2.5- and 5-fold higher specific activity at 10 and 30 ppt, respectively, than at 0 ppt. Kidney Na+, K+-ATPase specific activity was not significantly affected by environmental salinity. Citrate synthase and cytochrome c oxidase specific activities in gill were slightly (6–13%) lower at 10 ppt than at 0 and 30 ppt, whereas kidney activities were lowest at 30 ppt. Oxygen consumption of isolated gill filaments was significantly higher when incubated in isosmotic saline and at 30 ppt than at 0 ppt, but was not affected by the prior acclimation salinity. The results indicate that although high salinity induces increased gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity, it does not induce substantial increases in metabolic capacity of gill or kidney.
