Notes: The physical mechanism of photostimulated luminescence (PSL) of RbBr:Tl, resulting from x-ray irradiation, has been investigated. Spectroscopic methods have been utilized to identify the bromine F center as the occupied electron trap. By means of absorption studies the charge state of the dopant Tl was found to be monovalent. The spectral emission showed the characteristic Jahn–Teller splitting of the 3P1 state of the Tl+ and its known temperature dependence. PSL lifetime and efficiency experiments have been conducted in the temperature regime from liquid helium to 500 K to understand the charge transport from the F center to the activator and have been compared with corresponding data obtained from direct optical excitation into the A band of the Tl+. The observed temperature dependencies of both lifetimes could be explained by the properties of the s2 ion Tl+. As a resulting model for the PSL process a tunneling from the relaxed excited state of the F center to an excited state of the Tl2+ ion following photostimulation is suggested. The temporal, thermal, and spectral behavior of the subsequent radiative fraction of the deexcitation process is solely determined by the properties of the Tl+ ion in the RbBr matrix.

Notes: Abstract In light-dark-synchronized cultures of the unicellular green algaChlamydomonas reinhardtii, release of zoospores from the wall of the mother cell normally takes place during the second half of the dark period. The recently isolated mutant ‘ls’, however, needs light for the liberation of zoospores when grown photoautotrophically under a 12 h light-12 h dark regime. The light-induced release of zoospores was found to be prevented by addition of the photosystem-II inhibitor 3-(3′,4′-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. Furthermore, light dependence of this process was shown to be abolished when the mutant ‘ls’ was grown either photoautotrophically under a 14 h light-10 h dark regime or in the presence of acetate. Our findings indicate that the light-dependency of zoospore liberation observed in cultures of this particular mutant during photoautotrophic growth under a 12 h light-12 h dark regime might be attributed to an altered energy metabolism. The light-induced release of zoospores was found to be prevented by addition of cycloheximide or chloramphenicol, antibiotics which inhibit protein biosynthesis by cytoplasmic and organellar ribosomes, respectively. Actinomycin D, an inhibitor of RNA synthesis, however, did not affect the light-induced liberation of zoospores. Sporangia accumulate in stationary cultures of the mutant ‘ls’. Release of zoospores was observed when these sporangia were collected by centrifugation and incubated in the light after resuspension in fresh culture medium. Since liberation of zoospores was not observed after dilution of the stationary cultures with fresh culture medium, we suppose that components which interfere with the action of the sporangial autolysin are accumulated in the culture medium of the mutant ‘ls’.

Notes: Summary After spraying grass cultures with rainwater collected after the Chernobyl reactor accident, the time-dependence of the weathering of leaf contamination of134/137CS was determined. Hereby the influence of rain and of biomass increase due to growth was considered. Two effective half-lives were found of 6 d and more than 60 d in rain-protected grass for the activity per area (corresponding to 8 d and more than 60 d when related to the activity per dry weight) and 2 d and 30 d in rain-exposed grass for the activity per area (3 d and 23 d when activity per dry weight is considered). These half-lives represent the initially rapid (for about 90% of the activity) and later slow (for the residual about 10%) decrease of the Cesium content in grass. They might be due to different weathering mechanisms whereby the translocation of the radionuclides from the leaf surface into the plant interior and the loss of wax particles might be of importance.

Notes: Summary Novel experimental evidence is presented for the phase heterogeneity of a thermotropic copolyester containing 50 % of p-hydroxybenzdic acid (HB). Characteristic phase morphologies accompanying spinodal decomposition in polymer blends can be detected. Fractionation and a NMR-analysis demonstrate that the copolyester contains two constituents which differ in their HB-contents.

Notes: Abstract Antisera from guinea pigs made resistant to infestation with an ixodid tick of east and central Africa,Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, were used to identify the tick antigens they recognized by immunoblotting. Most of the antigens were found in tick salivary glands and in tick attachment cement. Antisera fromR. appendiculatus-resistant guinea pigs also recognized some salivarygland antigens in ticks of other species (R. pulchellus, R. evertsi, Amblyomma variegatum andA. gemma). Antibodies against the most strongly recognizedR. appendiculatus antigen, a 20-kDa molecule, were only poorly reactive with similar-sized molecules in the other ticks. A 94-kDa antigen, which appeared to have broader cross-reactivity, was purified fromR. appendiculatus attachment cement, and a monospecific rabbit serum was raised against it. This antiserum clearly recognized a molecule of similar molecular weight inR. pulchellus andR. evertsi. Intravenous inoculation of rabbits with the purified molecule elicited delayed-type hypersensitivity to the antigen. The hypersensitive rabbits demonstrated resistance to feeding ofR. appendiculatus ticks but slight enhanced feeding ofR. pulchellus ticks. These results are discussed with respect to their relevance for artificial induction of tick-feeding resistance.
