Notes: The liquid SIMS mass spectra of silver acetate dissolved in a glycerol matrix is discussed, with emphasis on the formation of a ‘silver mirror’ on the surface of the glycerol droplet owing to reduction of the silver acetate. Silver clusters containing up to three silver atoms have been observed from this mirrored surface; Ag3+ cluster ions are not observed in the spectrum when conditions are such that the mirror is not formed. For example, use of a slightly oxidizing matrix (o-nitrophenyl octyl ether or m-nitrobenzylalcohol) prevents formation of the ‘mirror’; only Ag+ is sputtered from this surface.

Notes: The Raman and infrared spectra of pimelic acid, (CH2)5[COOH (D)]2, and its potassium salts in aqueous solution were recorded from 4000 to 200 cm-1. The two salts belong to the Cs symmetry point group whereas the acid has C1 symmetry. These results are similar to those found previously for lower alkanedloic acids with an odd number of carbon atoms, namely glutaric acid, (CH2)3(COOH)2, and malonic acid, CH2(COOH)2.

Description: Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) participates in many processes including early developmental events, angiogenesis, wound healing, and maintenance of neuronal cell viability. A 130-kilodalton protein was isolated on the basis of its ability to specifically bind to bFGF. A complementary DNA clone was isolated with an oligonucleotide probe corresponding to determined amino acid sequences of tryptic peptide fragments of the purified protein. The putative bFGF receptor encoded by this complementary DNA is a transmembrane protein that contains three extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, an unusual acidic region, and an intracellular tyrosine kinase domain. These domains are arranged in a pattern that is different from that of any growth factor receptor described.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lee, P L -- Johnson, D E -- Cousens, L S -- Fried, V A -- Williams, L T -- CA 21765/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- R01 HL32898/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1989 Jul 7;245(4913):57-60.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco 94143.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2544996" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: A non-parametric method for supervised pattern recognition is presented. The method is of the class modelling type, meaning that a classification rule is developed for each class, using the dissimilarities between the objects of the class. The dissimilarities between the objects within a class are related to the distances between all pairs of training objects. As distance metric, a measure is proposed that takes the correlation between the interval-scale variables into account, and that moreover can be used for mixed types of variables. The classification rule is based on the construction of a boundary in the measurement space. For the determination of the class boundary, several strategies are proposed and compared. The performance of the technique is evaluated on the basis of several data sets. Comparison with the class modelling technique UNEQ shows its usefulness for practical application.

Notes: Although coupled liquid chromatographygas chromatography (LC-GC) was first demonstrated ten years ago, only in the last few years has there been a sudden surge of interest in the technique. Approximately 70% of the total number of LC-GC applications have been published in the last two years (1987-88) alone. This review categorizes LC-GC publications into four main application areas: fossil fuels, foods, environmental samples, biologiical/pharmaceutical samples, and miscellaneous samples. Multidimensional separations carried out using other coupled-column chromatographic techniques (such as supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with GC, and on-line trace enrichment-GC) have also been included in this review.

Notes: A procedure has been developed for the automated determination of aflatoxin M1 in decreamed milk, by using on-line dialysis and subsequent trace enrichment on a reverse phase column. After foreflush to the analytical column the determination is performed with fluorescence detection. Fully automated analysis within 10 min is thus possible with reproducible dialysis recoveries above 50% (CV is 3.3%, n = 20) and detection levels of 50 ng/kg.

Notes: A multidimensional system based on capillary supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) was constructed that utilizes a simple flow-switching interface between two open-tubular 50-μm i.d. columns. A novel solvent-venting injection technique was incorporated in the system that enables single or multiple 0.5-μL volumes to be injected into an uncoated, yet deactivated, length of capillary precolumn without flooding of the analytical column. The effectiveness of multidimensional capillary SFC (SFC-SFC) for complex mixtures is demonstrated by the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in a coal tar extract, the trace determination of a methylcarbamate pesticide and its metabolites in a bird extract, and a group-type separation of hydrocarbons in a high-boiling petroleum distillate. These examples show for the first time that capillary SFC-SFC is a complementary alternative to other multidimensional chromatographic methods involving liquid or gaseous mobile phases.

Notes: Positive ion fast atom bombardment and liquid secondary ion mass spectra of aryl iodonium salts usually contain the intact cation as the base peak in the spectrum, along with lower abundance fragment ions that result from cleavages, rearrangements, and in some cases, combinations of such losses with addition of hydrogen from the matrix. An interesting rearrangement that leads to loss of the central iodine as a neutral atom occurs in source fragmentations as well as in low collision energy collision-activated dissociation. Energy-resolved tandem mass spectrometry is used to establish the relative facilities of the rearrangement and cleavage reactions of the intact cation. Tandem mass spectrometry is also used to identify reduced forms of the intact cation and its fragments. The occurrence of these reactions implicates direct fragmentation in the condensed phase or in a solvent-salt cluster in the selvedge immediately above the sample surface.
