Notes: A novel technique has been developed to immobilize plant cells. The cells are deposited on a surface of manmade fibrous material that provides for strong binding of the plant tissue biomass growing in the submerged culture. The immobilized plant cells remain fully viable. Relatively uniform biomass loadings of up to 20 mg d.w. plant cells/cm2 support material have been attained. All plant cells from the inoculum suspension became attached within the first 24-48 h depending on the support matrix configuration and hydraulic culture conditions. The advantages and scale-up potential of this technique are discussed and compared to other culturing modes.

Description: The Dust Impact Detection System (DIDSY) aboard the Giotto spacecraft provided the information on the dust flux, mass spectrum, and cumulative mass distribution flux in the coma of Comet Halley. Analysis of discrete pulse height data of cometary particles for the mass range of particles between 4.0 x 10 to the -10th g and 6.0 x 10 to the -6th g registered by the Giotto DIDSY detectors 2, 3, and 4 has been completed, and a cumulative flux has been determined for this size range of particles. Inside the cometopause, anomalous peaks have been identified as deviation from a 1/R-squared curve in both pre- and postencounter measurements.

Notes: Aerobic glucose metabolism by Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms at various calcium loading rates was investigated. The influence of calcium on specific growth rate, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) formation rate, biofilm detachment rate, and biofilm calcium concentrations was determined. Calcium accumulated in the biofilm in proportion to the liquid phase concentration. Increasing calcium concentration increased the cohesiveness of the biofilm as indicated by a lower relative detachment rate. Specific activity in the biofilm was the same as that measured in a chemostat and was not influenced by changing calcium concentration. EPS formation rate in the biofilm was unaffected by calcium concentration but was higher than that observed in a chemostat.

Description: The present gasdynamic study of the planetesimal-accumulation stage in which 10-km bodies in the neighborhood of 1 AU grow to 10 to the 25th-10 to the 27th g mass, or 'planetary embryo' size, attempts to identify the circumstances under which runaway growth forms a small number of massive embryos in the terrestrial-planet region on a 0.1-1.0 million year time-scale. No runaways are found, however, unless more plausible physical processes are invoked; in that case, runaways in the terrestrial planet region are probable on a 0.1 million-year time-scale, and the final stage of planetary accumulation may involve the growth of these embryos into the present planets on a 10-100 million-year time-scale.

Description: Spectra of PV Cephei from 2 to 4 microns reveal a moderately strong 3 micron ice-absorption feature. Normally seen in objects with high visual obscuration, A(V) greater than 10, this absorption in an object with A(V) = 3.5-5.0 suggests the existence of a dense circumstellar disk. This paper discusses the evidence for a disk from this data and other wavelength regions, the possible origin of the 3-micron feature in PV Cephei, and the relationship between this object and other young stellar objects.

Notes: Certain thermoplastic resins, brominated diphenyl ether flame retardants, a pyrolysate and fumes collected during resin extrusion were analyzed for brominated dibenzofurans (PBDF) to assess the potential for encountering PBDF in the environment. EPA methods (RCRA Method 8280 and CERCLA IFB WA84-A002) were modified as needed to allow determination of PBDF in these matrices. Except for the base resins, all samples were found to contain PBDF. The pyrolysate also contained compounds whose structures were assigned to be brominated dioxins (PBDD) and possibly brominated xanthenes (PBX) or methyl-PBDF.

Notes: The analytical potential of negative ion chemical ionization (NICI) mass spectrometry utilizing dibromodifluoro-methane (CF2Br2) and iodomethane (CH3I)/methane (CH4) as reagent gases is examined. The NICI mass spectrum of CF2Br2 contains Br-, [HBr2]- and [CF2Br3]- anions. Weak acids (i.e. those acids with approximately ΔH°(acid) values between 1674 and 1464 kJ mol-1) react with Br- to produce minor yields of the hydrogen-bonded bromide attachment [MH + Br]- anion or are unreactive. Strong acids (i.e. those acids with approximately ΔH°(acid) 〉 1464 kJ mol-1) produce primarily [MH + Br]- anions with a minor yield of proton transfer [M — H]- anion. The NICI spectrum of CH3I/CH4 is dominated by I-. Weak acids react with I- to yield minor amounts of [MH + 1]- or are unreactive. Strong acids produce only [MH + l]- anions. From a consideration of the gas-phase basicity of the halide anion and the binding energy of the hydrogen-bonded halide attachment adduct, thermochemical data are used as a potential guide to rationalize or predict the ions observed in NICI mass spectra.

Notes: LL-F28249-α is a potent antiparasitic antibiotic produced by Streptomyces cyaneogriseus ssp. noncyanogenus. Its complete 13C NMR spectral assignment based on two-dimensional double-quantum experiments in a sample at natural isotopic abundance is described. The proton NMR assignments were made from a combination of homonuclear and heteronuclear two-dimensional correlation experiments. Proton-proton scalar couplings, nuclear Over-hauser enhancements and molecular mechanics energy minimization calculations are also reported, permitting a comparison of solution conformation with the known x-ray structure adapted from a closely related analogue.
