Notes: Abstract The note demonstrates that the unweighted sum of the Hicksian equivalent variations is not a reasonable welfare indicator if consumers have different wages. It recommends the unweighted sum of the individual money metrics, all evaluated at thesame reference pricesand reference wage. For this measure the comparability and necessary measurability of utility functions and welfare changes can be guaranteed. In contrast to Pauwels's measure the indicator proposed possesses the properties one expects.

Notes: Abstract Impedance cardiography was used to determine the classical systolic time intervals (STI's) (i.e., pre-ejection period (PEP), left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and the quotient PEP/LVET), in young, healthy, male subjects during supine and seated exercise. With increasing exercise, there was a tendency toward decreases in PEP, LVET, and PEP/LVET. In the seated position, there was an increase in transthoracic Zo incident to the caudal migration of thoracic blood—a result of the postural change. With seated exercise, there were—in contrast to supine exercise—greater decreases in PEP/LVET and greater increases in the Heather index. Similarly, there was a tendency toward increases in dZ/dtmin and the Rapid Ejection Index. We suggest that these differences are related to increased myocardial contractility resulting from the postural augmentation of cardio-sympathetic activity, added to that of exercise per se. This study, as well as previous ones, indicates that impedance cardiography is reliable, effective, and more practicable than the arteriographic method for monitoring STI's. We also believe that certain impedance-derived indices (i.e., transthoracic Zo, dZ/dtmin and the Heather Index) have considerable potential value for physiologic and clinical investigation.

Notes: Abstract Based on the spin-polarized version of the multiple scattering theory, a relativistically correct formulation for the Green’s function describing the electronic structure of magnetic metallic systems has been derived. By this way, orbital contributions to the magnetic moment and, for the first time, to the hyperfine fields, which are caused by an unquenching of the orbital momentum due to spin-orbit coupling, were accessible to a calculation. In the case of Fe, Co and Ni, it has been found, that the corresponding non-s-contributions to the hyperfine field of the conduction electrons stem nearly exclusively from the d-electrons, are positive and of the same order of magnitude as the s-part of the conduction band contribution to the total hyperfine field. In all three cases these large non-s-hyperfine fields compensate the relativistic enhancement of the (Fermi contact) s-hyperfine field compared to a non-relativistic calculation, leading to theoretical hyperfine fields which are below the experimental ones. At the moment, it cannot be decided whether this discrepancy is caused by the neglect of the non-s-contributions of the core electrons or shortcomings of the local spin density approximation.

Notes: Abstract The11B and31P NMR Knight shift (K) and Korringa spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T 1 T) have been measured for amorphous Ni81.5B18.5−x P x alloys with 0≤x≤18.5. In accordance with previous bulk measurements, the31P NMR parameters vary markedly with composition whereas the11B NMR parameters remain almost constant except for small P-contents. It is suggested that the d-band contribution toK(31P) is positive and that toK(11B) is negative. The data further support our previous conclusion that amorphous Ni81.5B18.5 is a Pauli paramagnet rather than a weak itinerant ferromagnet.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine fields of Fe and Co in the substitutionally disorderedbcc alloy system Fe x Co1−x due to the Fermi contact interaction have been studied by means of charge self-consistent cluster Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker-Coherent Potential Approximation- (KKR-CPA) band structure calculations. The contribution to the Fermi contact hyperfine field due to core polarisation was found to be proportional to the local moment for Fe as well as for Co throughout the concentration range. On the other hand, the contributions of the conduction band did not show such a simple behavior, but were found to be dominated by the population of the s-bands for spin up and down. These findings are completely analogous to those obtained in a recent study of the ferromagnetic alloy systems Fe x Ni1−x and Fe x Cr1−x . To investigate the importance of relativistic effects on the Fermi contact hyperfine fields, the corresponding hyperfine matrix elements have been calculated nonrelativistically as well as fully relativistically. The results of the present work are compared with experiment as well as to theoretical data on related alloy systems.

Notes: Abstract A defect in the regulation of the phagocytic component of immunity is revealed in patients with atopic dermatitis with more than 70% skin involvement. This defect manifests itself in the lack of production of stimulating neutrophilokines and impaired receptor capacity of monocytes. The regulation of not only peripheral cells, but also their bone marrow precursors was impaired.

Notes: Abstract Three identical oligopeptide-containing fractions of so-called “medium molecules”, isolated by sequential ultrafiltration and gel chromatography from the blood of 8 intact dogs and 15 dogs with an extensive thermal burn, were examined for their impact on phagocytic cells (neutrophil granulocytes and macrophages) in relation to the molecular-weight distribution of the molecules. The relatively high-polymer fractions of medium molecules, unlike oligomeric fractions, stimulated the phagocytic activity of these cells. Because of their increased polymerism, the fractions of medium molecules from dogs with thermal trauma stimulated phagocytosis to a greater extent than did those from intact animals.
