    Description: The magnetic field investigation of the Cluster four-spacecraft mission is designed to provide intercalibrated measurements of the B magnetic field vector. The instrumentation and data processing of the mission are discussed. The instrumentation is identical on the four spacecraft. It consists of two triaxial fluxgate sensors and of a failure tolerant data processing unit. The combined analysis of the four spacecraft data will yield such parameters as the current density vector, wave vectors, and the geometry and structure of discontinuities.

    Description: Using the ISEE-1/2 spacecraft, an unusual FTE was studied. The perturbation in the direction normal to the magnetopause reached a maximum size of 64 nT, exceeding the field amplitude in the adjacent magnetosphere. The observation was made at 1500 Local Time in the Southern Hemisphere (10 deg below the magnetic equator). From two point observations, it was found that the structure has a scale length of 2R(E) in the north-south direction in boundary normal coordinates. The velocity of the structure in that direction was about 50 km/sec. The dimension and the velocity in the east-west direction could not be established. The FTE signature recurred after about 9 minutes.

    Description: This paper analyzes observations, made by particle and field instruments on the AMPTE CCE satellite, of intense ULF pulsations in the earth's magnetosphere near the geomagnetic equator. These pulsations were observed during magnetically quiet periods in regions characterized by intense fluxes of warm strongly trapped light ions, predominantly H(+), and often with streaming low-energy plasma. The strong latitudinal localization of these pulsations is interpreted to be due to equatorial mass loading or to partial reflection of Alfven wave energy by latitudinal gradients in plasma density. Possible sources of wave energy for these events are discussed.

    Description: Measurements have been made of stratospheric N2O using the Stony Brook millimeter-wave remote sensing spectrometer at McMurdo Station, and NO2 mixing ratios are found that are less than 1.5 at 20 km and less than 1.10 at 25 km compared to values measured during the Antarctic summer. The observed mixing ratios are also much less than those predicted by global-scale models of stratospheric chemistry and dynamics. As the NO2 signal remained very weak when McMurdo was at the edges of the ozone hole and showed no signs of recovering during October, it is concluded that the geographical and temporal extent of the region of low NO2 is comparable to or greater than that of the ozone hole. These results argue against theories that require springtime upwelling to explain the Antarctic ozone hole. It is suggested that the air in the Antarctic lower stratosphere during late winter and early spring has been subjected to considerable downward transport.

    Description: In April 1986, during passage of the SAGE I satellite, the first simultaneous measurements of the atmospheric backscattering coefficient beta (pi, 10.6 microns) were made with an airborne CO2 lidar. Individual ratios of beta and the SAGE II extinction sigma (1.02 micron) are in reasonable accord with previously calculated values. The trend with height shows a distinctly nonlinear relation, which is probably attributable to steadily changing size distributions of aerosols.

    Description: Results demonstrating an abrupt change in the rate and character of sedimentation in the South China Sea at the close of the last glacial period are presented. Radiocarbon dating and its position in the oxygen isotope shift suggest that this change may be coincident with the abrupt change in climatic conditions seen at high latitudes in the North Atlantic and the Antarctic at 13 kyr BP. These results support the contention that a major global climatic change occurred between 14 and 13 kyr BP.

    Description: New measurements of the low-altitude ClO profile, made during September 1987, are presented along with detailed observations of ozone depletion over McMurdo Station, Antarctica during the same period. The results show that both the rate and altitude range of ozone depletion can be quantitatively accounted for by a mechanism in which the ClO dimer is the important intermediary in the catalytic destruction of ozone. An alternative bromine mechanism appears capable of contributing only 5-15 percent to the ozone loss rate.

    Description: The mixing ratio profile of N2O5 has been inferred from high-resolution emission spectra obtained with a balloon-borne Fourier spectrometer. The observations were taken for the period from midnight to predawn on September 16, 1986 at 32 deg N latitude. The inferred volume mixing ratio from nighttime average spectra has a peak of about 1.8 x 10 to the -9th in the 32-35 altitude range. The inferred mixing ratio is generally less than the theoretical predictions from a one-dimensional model.

    Description: The Peninsular Gneisses of Southern India developed over a period of several hundred Ma in the middle-to-late Archaean. Gneisses in the Gorur-Hassan area of southern Karnataka are the oldest recognized constituents: Beckinsale et al. reported a preliminary Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron age of 33558 + or - 66 Ma, but further Rb-Sr and Pb/Pb whole-rock isochron determinations indicate a slightly younger, though more precise age of ca 3305 Ma (R. D. Beckinsale, Pers. Comm.). It is well established that the Peninsular Gneisses constitute basement on which the Dharwar schist belts were deposited. Well-documented exposures of unconformities, with basal quartz pebble conglomerates of the Dharwar Supergroup overlying Peninsular Gneisses, have been reported from the Chikmagalur and Chitradurga areas, and basement gneisses in these two areas have been dated by Rb-Sr and Pb/Pb whole-rock isochron methods at ca 3150 Ma and ca 3000 Ma respectively. Dharwar supracrustal rocks of the Chitradurga schist belt are intruded by the Chitradurga Granite, dated by a Pb/Pb whole-rock isochron at 2605 + or - 18 Ma. These results indicate that the Dharwar Supergroup in the Chitradurga belt was deposited between 3000 Ma and 2600 Ma.

    Description: In order to corroborate the hypothesis of Alvarez and others about the connection of mass mortality and meteorite or cometary impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, it is necessary to find a meteorite crater which was formed at the same time. Masaitiss suggested that the Karskiy craters (USSR) are suitable, but previous K/Ar data from other laboratories are very different (from 47 to 82 million years). Impact glasses were gathered from the Karskiy and Ust-Karskiy craters K/Ar age analyses were performed. The glasses cooled very rapidly and had the youngest model ages from 65.8 to 67.6 million years. The slower cooling crypto-crystalline aggregates had more ancient model ages, from 70.5 to 73.9 my as had tagamite because they captured excess argon during crystallization. Least squares analysis showed that with probability of 99 percent the findings on crypto-crystalline aggregates, tagamite and quartz glasses from the Karskiy and Ust-Karskiy craters lie on an isochron which has an age of 65.8 + or - 1.1 million years and a content of excess argon. For the two glasses with identical composition which have different quantities of secondary non-potassium minerals, an independent method determined the content of excess argon. Taking into account these data a more exact slope of the first isochron of 66.4 + or - 1.0 million years was observed and the second glass isochron with age 66.5 + or - 1.1 million years was constructed.
