    Notes: Abstract An atomic beam deflection experiment is described which establishes upper limits to the electrical charges of potassium and cesium atoms ofq(K)〈2.4×10−18 q e andq(Cs)〈3.0×10−18 q e at the 90% confidence level, in whichq e is the electron charge magnitude. If we assume that the electron neutrino charge is zero and that charge conservation holds in neutron beta decay, then the difference δq in the electron and proton charge magnitudes has the upper limit δq〈1.3×10−20 q e at the 90% confidence level. The possibility of a more sensitive atomic beam deflection experiment using a laser-cooled atomic beam is suggested. A brief review of the topic of the electrical neutrality of atoms is given.

    Notes: Relayed coherence transfer (RELAY) two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy was demonstrated to be an effective technique for overcoming the problem of overlapping multiplets in the analysis of the 1H NMR spectra of steroids. Cross-sections through appropriate proton resonances resulted in resolved spectra of the spin systems for each of the saturated rings of the estrogenic hormones 17β- and 17α-estradiol. During RELAY experiments with a fixed delay time of 0.042 s it was possible to observe RELAY cross-peaks between H-11α and 18-CH3 which resulted from magnetization transfer via long-range coupling between 18-CH3 and H-12α. The difference in stereochemistry at C-17 of these estradiol epimers allowed an examination of the effect of substituent configuration on the RELAY cross-peak intensity in order to determine the ability of the RELAY method to provide qualitative structural information.

    Description: Electron microprobe and INAA were used to analyze forty spherules of Apollo 15 yellow-brown glass for major and trace elements. The glass is one of twenty-five high-Mg primary magmas emplaced on the lunar surface in pyroclastic eruptions. The abundances show that the magma was produced by partial melting of differentiated cumulates in the lunar mantle. Models to explain the possible source-regions of several Apollo 15 and Apollo 12 low-Ti mare magmas are presented.

    Description: Using the subdivision of Apollo 16 regolith breccias into ancient (about 4 Gyr) and younger samples (McKay et al., 1986), with the present-day soils as a third sample, a petrologic and chemical determination of regolith evolution and exotic component addition at the A-16 site was performed. The modal petrologies and mineral and chemical compositions of the regolith breccias in the region are presented. It is shown that the early regolith was composed of fragments of plutonic rocks, impact melt rocks, and minerals and impact glasses. It is found that KREEP lithologies and impact melts formed early in lunar history. The mare components, mainly orange high-TiO2 glass and green low-TiO2 glass, were added to the site after formation of the ancient breccias and prior to the formation of young breccias. The major change in the regolith since the formation of the young breccias is an increase in maturity represented by the formation of fused soil particles with prolonged exposure to micrometeorite impacts.
