Notes: Paramecium caudatum syngen 3 could not reproduce in the defined medium (DM) which had been developed for P. octaurelia stock 299, but we succeeded in culturing it in DM supplemented with glycogen. The number of food vacuoles which formed in 5 and 10 min at 25°C in the DM alone was greater in comparison with the DM supplemented with glycogen. These results showed that the high molecular weight substance which needed to be added to a defined medium for the cultivation of Paramecium did not always support cell reproduction by stimulating food vacuole formation.

Notes: . This paper investigates the potential offered by the model of spatial competition for the study of central place theory. We consider n firms selling m substitutable or complementary goods to a continuum of consumers evenly distributed along a linear segment. Consumers have the same income and the same utility function which is quadratic in the goods supplied by the firms and linear in the numeraire. The main results are as follows. (1) In any location equilibrium in which all goods are consumed everywhere, each good supplied by a single firm is sold at the market center. In Christaller's terminology, this means that when the exhaustive principle holds in equilibrium, highest-order goods are made available at the center. (2) When all goods (excluding the numéraire) are complements to each other and each good is sold by a single firm, there always exists an equilibrium in which all the firms locate coincidentally. (3) If the stores selling a given good are under the control of a single owner then, in any equilibrium for which the exhaustive principle holds, the stores are located in a way such that the total transport cost (borne by consumers) is minimized.

Notes: Abstract— The growth behaviour of microstructurally small fatigue cracks was investigated with smooth specimens of a ferritic-pearlitic steel, S45C. under rotating bending. The effects of microstructure, particularly the role of pearlite structure, on crack growth were evaluated based on detailed microscopic observations. In the region smaller than a certain crack length. small cracks tended to grow preferentially in the ferrite structure, and the crack growth rates decreased markedly at ferrite-pearlite boundaries when small cracks grew into the pearlite from the ferrite. The above region of crack length, i.e. the length of microstructurally small cracks, depended on stress level, increasing with decreasing stress level. The growth mechanism is also discussed in terms of the results obtained from fractogrdphy.

Notes: Summary It was found that some ciliates,Stentor, Spirostomum andBlepharisma, which can contract rapidly like the stalks of Vorticellidae, have Ca2+-binding proteins that are very similar to spasmins, in the immunological sense. The presence of spasmins in other Protozoa and in some Metazoa was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract A geographical difference in reproductive status of moths in populations of C. medinalis Guénée was recognized in autumn paddy fields of north Kyushu, south-west Japan. This geographical variation in mating frequency of the population resembled the intensity of immigrant density in early summer: the proportion of mated females in the population was high in the west coast regions of Kyushu and low in inland areas. Light trap catches of moths in 1985 suggested overseas invasions from China in the autumn to westerly regions of north Kyushu. The potential autumn immigrations of moths in ripening paddy fields would satisfactorily explain the variations in reproductive status of moths with locality in the same season. These migrations are apparently non-adaptive because immigrants or their progeny would soon be killed at harvest or from cold weather.

Notes: Abstract The distributions of radioactivity were examined by whole body autoradiography and liquid scintillation spectrophotometry in male ddY mice following oral administration of tritium-labelled Irgasan® DP300 (2,4,4′-trichloro-2′-hydroxydiphenyl ether) (I) and its three chlorinated derivatives; 2′,3,4,4′-tetrachloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether (II), 2′,4,4′,5-tetrachloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether (III) and 2′,3,4,4′,5-pentachloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether (IV). The autoradiograms at 6 or 24 hr showed that the radioactivity distributed in the gall, liver, lung, heart, and kidneys. Among these tissues the radioactivity was most concentrated in the gall, suggesting the enterohepatic circulation of these compounds. A much higher level of radioactivity in each tissue was observed in mice receiving [3H]-III than the other compounds tested. Most of the radioactivity disappeared from each tissue in 24 hr due to [3H]-Irgasan DP300, [3H]-II or [3H]-IV, but in 96 hr it was due to [3H]-III. The cumulative radioactivity excreted in urine after administration of these compounds was in the order of [3H]-Irgasan DP300, [3H]-II, [3H]-IV and [3H]-III while that in feces was in the order of [3H]-IV, [3H]-III, [3H]-II and [3H]-Irgasan DP300,

Notes: Summary The distribution of F-actin, α-actinin and filamin in smooth muscle cells of the chicken was examined by immunofluorescent and immunoelectron microscopy. Those from the gizzard, the femoral artery and the aortic arch were compared. F-Actin labeled by NBD-phallacidin was seen diffusely distributed in the sarcoplasm in the gizzard and the femoral artery, but in the aorta it was observed as streaks and spots, with unstained areas in between. Epon sections of the aortic arch showed that bundles of thin myofilaments run in various directions interspersed with areas mostly occupied by intermediate filaments. α-Actinin labelling occurred in dense plaques along the sarcolemma in all the muscles examined. While dense bodies in the sarcoplasm were common and labelled for α-actinin in the gizzard and the femoral artery, hardly any were seen in the aortic arch and little labelling for α-actinin was observed in the sarcoplasm. Filamin was concentrated along the periphery of dense bodies and plaques in the gizzard and the femoral artery, but it was seen diffusely in the sarcoplasm of the aortic muscle. After chemical skinning of the latter, filamin labelling persisted only in the F-actin bundles, and other areas became negative. The present results show that smooth muscle cells of the aortic arch contrast with those of the gizzard and even with those of the femoral artery in the distribution of F-actin, α-actinin and filamin. The mechanisms of contraction and/or stress maintenance in the aortic smooth muscle may be different from those in other smooth muscles.

Notes: Abstract Carbon-SiC-B4C composite materials were prepared from ground powder mixtures of petroleum raw coke, SiC and B4C by powder sintering, without the use of any special binder and hot-pressing process. Dense composites with a fine microtexture were obtained. Oxidation tests were carried out on the composites at temperatures from 1000 to 1300° C under an air flow. The oxidation resistance depended strongly on the SiC/(SiC + B4C) ratio and total contents of SiC and B4C in the composites, which determined the compositions of B2O3 and SiO2 in the protective film formed at the surface of the composite block during oxidation. In optimum ratios, from 63 to 87%, the composites showed such a high oxidation resistance that they were comparable with Si3 N4 at 1200° C.

Notes: Summary To obtain genetic materials to breed qualitatively improved rice storage proteins, we screened about 3,000 mutant lines induced by the treatment of rice fertilized egg cell with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU). The screening was performed by comparing the profiles of sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) with that of the original variety, Kinmaze, especially focussing on the changes in polypeptides present in two kinds of protein bodies, PB-I and PB-II. We selected 17 mutant lines and classified them into 4 types on the basis of variations of the relative contents of the polypeptides. Determination of extracted protein in the starchy endosperm of the mutants revealed changes in the content of prolamin and glutelin but not globulin. In some mutants there was marked accumulation of 57 kDa polypeptide concomitant with the remarkable reduction of glutelin subunits. Treatment of the fertilized egg cell with MNU was found to be an effective method to induce mutations for storage proteins in protein bodies of rice.
