Notes: Abstract In the processep→epγ, proposed for luminosity measurements at HERA, impact parameters occur which are larger than the transverse beam sizes in theep-colliders of HERA and a CERN option (LHC+LEP). This decreases the number of observed photons compared to the standard QED calculation. The difference is larger than 10% at photon energiesE γ〈0.4E e for the CERN option andE γ〈0.01E e for HERA.

Notes: Abstract A major program at the University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) is the study of eclipsing close-binary stars, which, because of circularization effects, are all cases of the restricted three-body problem. The physical properties of such systems are derived from modeling of the light and radial velocity curves. Uniqueness questions notwithstanding, careful use of the technique is found to yield reliable elements of the orbit and parameters of the component stars, even in the face of light curve perturbations. This work requires a greatly enlarged data base over previous work, and more complex modeling procedures, necessitating the use of a supercomputer. A version of the generalized synthetic light curve program of Wilson (1979) with star spot simulations has been adapted to and optimized for the University of Calgary's Cyber 205 supercomputer and further improvements are underway. With the use of personal computer graphics software, results have been transformed into three-dimensional, rotating models which help visualize the overcontact and perturbation conditions.

Notes: Abstract Through a combination of X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis (simultaneous TG-DTG-DTA and quasi-isothermal TG), it was shown that the molar ratio intercalation agent/kaolinite in all intercalation compounds is approximately 1. In a saturated atmosphere of the corresponding intercalation agent, the intercalation compounds are stable up to more than 150 °C. Decomposition of the potassium acetate intercalation compound proceeds simultaneously with the dehydroxylation of kaolinite at an extrapolated onset temperature of 360 °C. The high-temperature reactions (dehydroxylation and transformation) of kaolinite obtained through the decomposition of intercalation compounds with volatile intercalation agents depend on the conditions applied during decomposition.

    Notes: Abstract The complexation of the diflunisal anion (DF) by γ-cyclodextrin (γCD) and permethylatedβ-cyclodextrin (βPCD) in aqueous solution at pH 7.00 at 298.2 K, has been studied by UV-visible and19F NMR spectroscopy. The formation of 1∶1 and 1∶2 γCD inclusion complexes proceeds through the two equilibria: (K1) $${\text{DF + }}\gamma {\text{CD}} \rightleftharpoons {\text{DF}} \cdot \gamma {\text{CD}}$$ (K2) $${\text{DF}} \cdot \gamma {\text{CD + }}\gamma {\text{CD }} \rightleftharpoons {\text{ DF}} \cdot {\text{(}}\gamma {\text{CD)}}_{\text{2}} {\text{ }}$$ characterised byK 1=(5.5±0.2)×104 dm3 mol−1 andK 2=(2.3±0.2)×104 dm3 mol−1 derived from UV-visible spectrophotometric data. The analogous βPCD complexes are characterised byK 1=(6.86±0.02)×104 dm3 mol−1 andK 2=(8.75±2.7)×101 dm3 mol−1. The variation of the19F chemical shift of DF on inclusion is consistent with the formation of 1∶1 and 1∶2 complexes also. Comparisons with related systems are made.

Notes: Abstract Investigation on core level and valence band photoelectron spectra of lanthanide perovskite samples (Ag x La1−x CoO3;x〈0,3) and reinvestigations of metallic lanthanum and La-oxide layers are reported. Differences in preparation method during perovskite formation are leading to different quality of sample purity and different electronic properties. This could be followed by changes in the density of states near the Fermi energy. On the other hand the screening mechanism after ionization of a La 3d core hole is affected by the relative energy position of occupied valence band states with respect to the empty La 4f * level in the core ionized state. Changes in La 3d line profile are discussed as changes in multi electron processes (e.g. “shake up” or “energy gain”) during photoionization. We attribute the two electron process during photoemission of La 3d electrons to the well screened energy gain transition in LaCoO3, whereas the two electron process results in a shake up transition in La2O3 and La(OH)3.

Notes: Summary Dilatometrically determined initial rate of alternating copolymerization of anethole (M1) and maleic anhydride (M2) in methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is reported for the total monomer concentrations of 1M, 2M and 3M polymerized at 50°C with AIBN. The rate is larger than the first order with respect to the monomer concentration. The simplified complex model adopted by Shirota et al is found to be consistent with the data. The equilibrium constant of donor-acceptor complexation (C) of the comonomers is measured to be K=0.057 M−1 in MEK at 26°C. The ratios of the propagation rate constants are calculated to be k1c/k12=βD=2 and k2c/k21=βA=6.
