    Notes: An iterative type harmonic finite element model is developed for solving the full non-linear form of the shallow water equations. The scheme iteratively updates time histories of the non-linear terms which are then harmonically decomposed and used as forcing terms for the linear sets of equations which result from the harmonic separation of the shallow water equations.A least-squares harmonic analysis procedure is used to decompose the non-linear forcing terms. This procedure allows for the very efficient separation of extremely closely spaced harmonics, since it is highly selective with respect to the frequencies it considers. In addition tailoring the procedure and using very specific time steps and sampling periods significantly reduces the number of time samplings points required. In conjunction with the iterative nature of our scheme, the least-squares procedure makes the scheme entirely general, allows for the direct assessment of all tidal constituents, including compound tides, and permits the clear cut and complete investigation of their mutual interaction through the non-linearities. In addition this procedure readily computes very-low-frequency or residual type circulations.The FE formulation used shows a very low degree of spurious oscillations while remaining quite simple to implement. This control on nodal oscillations is especially important due to the energy transfer mechanisms involved in this type of iterative scheme.In an example application the effects of the various non-linear overtide and compound tide type interactions are examined. It is demonstrated that not only are compound tides significant relative to the overtides, but they also influence the overtides.

    Notes: A nine node finite element is presented for the analysis of thin shell structures undergoing large deflection. The finite element formulation is based on the concept of degenerate solid shell element and the Hellinger-Reissner principle with independent strain. Three versions of assumed independent strain are selected to suppress spurious kinematic modes. One version leads to a finite element model which is kinematically stable at element level while the other two give globally stable models. Numerical tests indicate that the finite element model which is stable at element level may reveal the locking effect in certain cases. However, the other two models are free of locking.

    Notes: The bulging of continuously cast steel between the support rolls has been computed using a viscoplastic finite element model. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional models are based on the minimization of the functional associated with the Norton-Hoff law and use the streamlines integration to calculate the bulging. By using industrial data, the influence of both numerical parameters and process parameters on the extent of the calculated bulging values has been investigated. The comparison of our results with experimental measurements confirms the relevance of the hypothesis of viscoplastic behaviour.

    Notes: Rate-independent plasticity and viscoplasticity in which the boundary of the elastic domain is defined by an arbitrary number of yield surfaces intersecting in a non-smooth fashion are considered in detail. It is shown that the standard Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions lead to the only computationally useful characterization of plastic loading. On the computational side, an unconditionally convergent return mapping algorithm is developed which places no restrictions (aside from convexity) on the functional forms of the yield condition, flow rule and hardening law. The proposed general purpose procedure is amenable to exact linearization leading to a closed-form expression of the so-called consistent (algorithmic) tangent moduli. For viscoplasticity, a closed-form algorithm is developed based on the rate-independent solution. The methodology is applied to structural elements in which the elastic domain possesses a non-smooth boundary. Numerical simulations are presented that illustrate the excellent performance of the algorithm.

    Notes: This paper is devoted to a comparison of various iterative solvers for the Stokes problem, based on the preconditioned Uzawa approach. In the first section the basic equations and general results of gradient-like methods are recalled. Then a new class of preconditioners, whose optimality will be shown, is introduced. In the last section numerical experiments and comparisons with multigrid methods prove the quality of these schemes, whose discretization is detailed.

    Notes: Numerical solutions are presented for the problem of steady laminar combined convection flows in vertical parallel plate ducts. Axial diffusion is neglected in the analysis and the resulting governing equations, which are of a parabolic nature, are expressed in an implicit finite difference scheme using a vorticity-stream function formulation and are solved using a marching technique. A constant wall temperature boundary condition is used and investigations are restricted to the case Pr = 0.72. A large range of values of the ratio Gr/Re is considered, -300 ≤ Gr/Re ≤ 70, and comparisons are made with the case of pure forced convection. For large values of the ratio |Gr/Re| reverse flow occurs in the duct. A modification to the standard marching technique is introduced and complete solutions are achieved for these situations for the first time. Results are presented in terms of velocity profiles, Nusselt numbers, friction factors and temperature distributions.

    Notes: In this paper a boundary element approach is presented to establish the eigenfrequencies and the mode shapes of the free vibrations of flexible membranes with arbitrary shape. The membranes may be of homogeneous, non-homogeneous or composite material, while their boundaries may be fixed or elastically supported. The implementation of the method is mainly based on the development of both a boundary element technique to compute numerically the Green function for the Laplace equation and a numerical procedure to solve domain integral equations using two-dimensional Gauss integration on regions of arbitrary shape. The efficiency of the method presented is demonstrated by applying it to study the free vibrations of membranes consisting of homogeneous, non-homogeneous and composite material, fixed or elastically supported on the boundary, and having various shapes, such as circular, rectangular, triangular, or elliptical, or being L-shaped or of arbitrary shape.

    Notes: General two-dimensional linear elastic fracture problems are investigated using the boundary element method. The √r displacement and 1/√r traction behaviour near a crack tip are incorporated in special crack elements. Stress intensity factors of both modes I and II are obtained directly from crack-tip nodal values for a variety of crack problems, including straight and curved cracks in finite and infinite bodies. A multidomain approach is adopted to treat cracks in an infinite body. The body is subdivided into two regions: an infinite part with a finite hole and a finite inclusion. Numerical results, compared with exact solution whenever possible, are accurate even with a coarse discretization.

    Notes: This paper discusses incompressible Navier-Stokes solution methods with an emphasis on the pseudocompressibility method. A steady-state flow solver based on the pseudocompressibility approach is then described. This flow solver code has been used to analyse the internal flow in the Space Shuttle main engine hot-gas manifold. Salient features associated with this three-dimensional realistic flow simulation are discussed. Numerical solutions relevant to the current engine analysis and the redesign effort are discussed along with experimental results. This example demonstrates the potential of computational fluid dynamics as a design tool for aerospace applications.

    Notes: An algorithm is given and proved for the solution of a strictly convex minimization problem with linear equality and inequality constraints, in a finite number of steps. It is used to solve frictionless and frictional problems in contact elastostatics, and it has the property that each step can be interpreted mechanically. It is believed that an adaptation of the algorithm will also work for large deformations, and in a non-elastic setting.
