Notizen: Abstract Coda wave quality factor (Q c ) was investigated by using digital data (100 sample sec−1) recorded by a vertical component short-period station installed for this study. The station was located in the greater Fairbanks area in central Alaska. From several hundred earthquakes recorded by this station in about a year, 27 earthquakes were selected for the above study; 7 of these selected earthquakes were located along the Alaska Wadati-Benioff zone (Pacific plate). The other 20 earthquakes were located in the area of intraplate seismicity (North American plate). The data was filtered using 9 pass-bands with center frequency varying from 1.5 Hz to 16 Hz with octave bandwidth. The values ofQ c obtained from the coda amplitude decay rates measured on the filtered data after corrections due to the recording instrument and source-receiver separation show appreciable frequency dependence. The value ofQ c varies in the range of 253 and 1190 corresponding to the frequency interval from 1.5 Hz to 16 Hz for the study area. This variation is close to that reported by others for the Kanto region of Japan. Moreover, the characteristics ofQ c obtained in the present case seem to be independent of epicentral distance and hypocentral depth.

Notizen: Abstract The general expressions for the scattering amplitudes due to Das have been rederived following a new approach. It is possible in this approach to improve the results considerably. Ionization of hydrogen atoms by electrons and positrons has also been considered.

Notizen: Abstract By use of the orthogonality and normalization integrals developed by McCormick and Siewert (1970) a set of singular integral equations suitable forF n -method is derived for non-coherent spectral line formation problem in finite media.F n -equations for exit distributions are used to develop some algebraic equations with suitable recursion relations.

Notizen: Abstract The time-dependent equation of radiative transfer for isotropic scattering has been solved by integral equation technique in terms ofX- andY-functions appropriate for the problem. It is seen thatX- andY-functions are reducible to the corresponding function for steady-state problems by simply changing the Laplace transform parameters-i.e., byS→0.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we present our most recent results on the sub-iron (Sc to Cr) to Fe nuclei abundance ratios in the low-energy cosmic rays of 50 to 250 MeV nucl.−1 and their implications as observed in theSkylab experiment. In view of the importance of this ratio in determining the cosmic-ray pathlength in interstellar medium, we have obtained additional data in the same detector module and the results of final analysis are reported. Charge determinations in the Lexan detector were made from an average of about four independent measurements ofZ for each of the cosmic-ray events and the mean charge resolution is obtained asΔZ/Z≈0.2. From about 100 events of calcium to nickel in low-energy cosmic rays, sub-iron (Sc to Cr) to Fe−Co ratio is determined as 1.43±0.40 in 50–250 MeV nucl.−1. This shows a large energy dependence of the ratio as compared to the value of 0.4–0.8 in 200–1000 MeV nucl.−1 as measured by many investigators. The origin of this large enhancement of the ratios in low-energy cosmic rays is not known at present. Some possible suggestions are briefly mentioned.

Notizen: Abstract Differential energy spectra of low abundant elements between silicon and iron of energetic solar particles (SEP) in the August 4, 1972 event were measured in the energy region of 10 to 40 MeV amu−1 using rocket-borne Lexan detectors. The relative abundances of elements were determined and abundance enhancements, i.e., SEP/photospheric ratios, and their energy dependence were derived in 10–40 MeV amu−1 interval. It is found that there are four types of abundance enhancements as a function of energy as follows: (a) silicon, iron, and calcium show fairly strong energy dependence which decreases with increasing energy and at 20–40 MeV amu−1 reaches photospheric values; (b) in case of sulphur enhancement factors are independent of energy and the values are close to unity; (c) argon shows energy independent enhancements of about 3 to 4 in 10–40 MeV amu−1; (d) titanium and chromium show weakly energy-dependent, but very high abundance enhancement factor of about 10 to 40. These features are to be understood in terms of the atomic properties of these elements and on the physical conditions in the accelerating region. These are important not only for solar phenomena but also to gain insight into the abundance enhancements of cosmic-ray heavy nuclei.

Notizen: Abstract We report the first results on the determination of the ionization states of oxygen ions in the anomalous cosmic rays (ACR) from the measurements of their flux in the cosmic-ray experiment in Spacelab-3 (SL-3) mission of NASA flown at 350 km altitude during 29 April–6 May, 1985. The detectors used were specially prepared CR-39 plastics of very high sensitivity for recording tracks of ions withZ〉2. The measured orbit averaged flux of ACR oxygen is (2.9±1.3)×10−4 particles m−2sr−1s−1 (MeV N−1) at an energy of 23 MeV N−1. We made an independent estimate of the expected ACR oxygen flux at SL-3 orbit from interplanetary data and compared this with the measured flux to infer the ionization states of ACR oxygen ions. The flux and energy spectra of ACR oxygen at 1 AU outside the magnetosphere is obtained from the data of Voyager-2, during the same epoch as the SL-3 flight, and using the measured radial intensity gradient of 15%/AU for ACR oxygen between 1–17 AU. We calculate the geomagnetic transmission factors for ACR oxygen ions of charge states O+1, O+2, etc., from the known cut-off rigidities in the world grid and using the SL-3 trajectories for 116 orbits in the 6-day mission to obtain the expected flux at SL-3 for different charge states. When these flux values are compared with our measured flux, the averge ionization state of ACR oxygen ions in the energy interval of 20–26 MeV N−1 is obtained as O+1.

Notizen: Abstract PTFE specimens were slid against an EN24 disc. The unworn and worn surfaces as well as the wear debris were examined by X-ray diffraction. Sliding was found to introduce (i) shrinkage of the unit cell, (ii) enlargement of crystallites and (iii) residual stresses in the slid PTFE surface. No conformational changes in the 157 helix could be observed due to sliding. The wear debris was found to be 1 μm thick warped laminates.

Notizen: Abstract Uptil now it has not been possible to explain the different physical properties of amorphous polymers using a model based on a single conceptual scheme. In this paper, a phenomenological model is proposed which tries to explain the mechanical, optical and thermal properties (both thermal conductivity and expansivity) of amorphous polymers. The model has similarities with the composite model, proposed by the present authors, which has proved to be successful in interpreting the different physical properties of semicrystalline polymers. The present model considers the bulk form of the polymer as an aggregate of microscopic units possessing intrinsic physical properties. On drawing, the development of anisotropy in different physical properties is supposed to be due to the development of preferred orientation of these units. The development of the preferred orientation has been estimated directly from birefringence data. The agreement between the calculated and experimental values of the elastic modulus, thermal conductivity and thermal expansivity of PVC, PMMA and PS is found to be reasonable good.
