Description: It is currently unclear whether observed pelagic ecosystem responses to ocean warming, such as a mid-1970s change in the eastern North Pacific, depart from typical ocean variability. We report variations in planktonic foraminifera from varved sediments off southern California spanning the past 1400 years. Increasing abundances of tropical/subtropical species throughout the 20th century reflect a warming trend superimposed on decadal-scale fluctuations. Decreasing abundances of temperate/subpolar species in the late 20th century indicate a deep, penetrative warming not observed in previous centuries. These results imply that 20th-century warming, apparently anthropogenic, has already affected lower trophic levels of the California Current.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Field, David B -- Baumgartner, Timothy R -- Charles, Christopher D -- Ferreira-Bartrina, Vicente -- Ohman, Mark D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Jan 6;311(5757):63-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA. dfield@mbari.org〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16400144" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Geochemical, microbiological, and molecular analyses of alkaline saline groundwater at 2.8 kilometers depth in Archaean metabasalt revealed a microbial biome dominated by a single phylotype affiliated with thermophilic sulfate reducers belonging to Firmicutes. These sulfate reducers were sustained by geologically produced sulfate and hydrogen at concentrations sufficient to maintain activities for millions of years with no apparent reliance on photosynthetically derived substrates.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lin, Li-Hung -- Wang, Pei-Ling -- Rumble, Douglas -- Lippmann-Pipke, Johanna -- Boice, Erik -- Pratt, Lisa M -- Sherwood Lollar, Barbara -- Brodie, Eoin L -- Hazen, Terry C -- Andersen, Gary L -- DeSantis, Todd Z -- Moser, Duane P -- Kershaw, Dave -- Onstott, T C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Oct 20;314(5798):479-82.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Geosciences, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA. lhlin@ntu.edu.tw〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17053150" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The analysis of Madin et al. (Reports, 12 May 2006, p. 897) of Phanerozoic diversity failed to support expected correlations between carnivores and noncarnivores, leading the authors to reject escalation as an important macroevolutionary process. The test, however, is based on a flawed model of causality, and the ecological groups are improperly delineated with regard to the hypothesis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Roopnarine, Peter D -- Angielczyk, Kenneth D -- Hertog, Rachel -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Nov 10;314(5801):925; author reply 925.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology, California Academy of Sciences, 875 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA. proopnarine@calacademy.org〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17095679" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Exotic species are widely assumed to thrive because they lack natural enemies in their new ranges. However, a meta-analysis of 63 manipulative field studies including more than 100 exotic plant species revealed that native herbivores suppressed exotic plants, whereas exotic herbivores facilitated both the abundance and species richness of exotic plants. Both outcomes suggest that plants are especially susceptible to novel, generalist herbivores that they have not been selected to resist. Thus, native herbivores provide biotic resistance to plant invasions, but the widespread replacement of native with exotic herbivores eliminates this ecosystem service, facilitates plant invasions, and triggers an invasional "meltdown."〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Parker, John D -- Burkepile, Deron E -- Hay, Mark E -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Mar 10;311(5766):1459-61.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Biology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA 30332, USA. jdp52@cornell.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16527979" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
