    Notes: Abstract Although the cool temperate (boreal) waters of the N. Pacific and N. Atlantic share many similar if not identical species, there have been few studies to test the identity of these species pairs. Whereas such tests are important from a taxonomic perspective, they tell us little if anything about biogeographic relationships. A more useful approach is one employing phylogenetic systematics (cladistics). The interpretation of phylogenetic diagrams (cladograms) in terms of biogeographic area relationships is explained. It is argued that cladistic analyses of taxa occurring in the cool temperate waters of the northern oceans can provide biogeographic tracks, which in turn can suggest the origins and migrations of species and possibly even floras. A number of cool temperate taxa that appear particularly amenable to this approach are discussed, including genera in the Palmariaceae, Corallinaceae, Dumontiaceae, Solieriaceae, Petrocelidaceae, Ceramiaceae and Rhodomelaceae.

    Notes: Summary Polyclonal antibodies were raised to isolated toad bladder granules. On immunoblots, the anti-granule antiserum specifically stained components of isolated granules. Immunocytochemically, the anti-granule antiserum labeled the apical surface of the bladder. Immunolabeling increased at the apical surface when the bladder was exposed to antidiuretic hormone (ADH) serosally or phorbol ester (PMA) mucosally—conditions which stimulate apical granule exocytosis. The increase in granule epitopes on the apical surface was sixfold greater than the net increase in surface area.

    Notes: Abstract Isolated tips (approx. 2 mm long) from aseptic, multiplying shoot cultures of the triploid dessert banana clone ‘Highgate’ were tested for their morphogenetic responsiveness to hormone treatments on semisolid media. Medium containing Murashige and Skoog (1962) salts, p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, and kinetin produced a compact calloid mass. Protuberances disclosed by SEM as rounded, button-shaped, and pointed outgrowths resembling fasciated shoots were formed in profusion. Sections showed many meristematic regions, some associated with distinct leaf primordia. Formation and growth of successive leaves yielded small, elongated, adventitious shoots with constricted bases. Transferral to a basal MS medium with 1 mg/l 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) led to the formation of rooted plantlets.

    Notes: Summary It is generally supposed that the elongated, often coiled tracheae of many species of birds are adaptations for the production of loud, penetrating calls. A corollary supposition is that the acoustic effects are produced by the resonant properties of the elongated tube, with the birds being analogized to a wind instrument. We have experimented with several species of cranes possessing different degrees of tracheal coiling. Regardless of the degree of coiling, all cranes can utter extremely loud calls using remarkably low driving pressures. Neither surgical modifications of the trachea nor changing the respiratory gases to helium-oxygen produced consistent changes of voice that could be unambiguously attributed to changes of tubal resonances. However, shortening the trachea markedly reduced vocal intensity, the degree of reduction being roughly proportional to the degree of shortening. Although some of that reduction may derive from an increased impedance mismatch at the external aperture of the tube, and some from a decreased radiation directly from the hard walls of the trachea, these explanations scarcely account for the dramatic effects we observed. We, therefore, hypothesize a more unusual mechanism: The tracheal coils that are embedded in the sternum serve a function analogous to the bridge of a stringed instrument, transmitting the vibrations of a tiny sound source to a large radiating surface, the sternum. The sternum then vibrates against the large internal air reservoir of the avian airsac system. As it has a complex shape, the sternum will have many resonances and will respond to many frequencies; as a solid oscillator, its resonances will not be greatly affected by low density gases. Hence, we suggest that cranes and other birds with enlarged windpipes are more properly analogized with a violin than a trombone.

    Notes: Summary The importance of selectivity in the capillary gas chromatographic analysis of the cellular fatty acids of micro-organisms is underestimated. The analysis on apolar silicone phases can lead to erratic elucidation of the fatty acid structure. Qualitative errors have been detected in commercially available standards on which computer matching identification techniques are based. Using highly polar capillary columns of the cyanopropyl silicone type, the errors could be elucidated. The exact identification of the hydrolysis products of bacteria is a must for chemotaxonomic studies applying chromatographic techniques. The fatty acid methyl ester profiles can also contain other chemical components which are very important taxonomic markers. Fatty aldehydes, for example, are main components in someClostridium species. Fractionation techniques are described for selective enrichment of fatty aldehydes and hydroxy fatty acids.

    Notes: Abstract A variety of situations commonly used to assess aggression in laboratory rodents was studied in two outbred varieties and six inbred strains of mice. The situations investigated included attacks on anosmic TO-line standard opponents by males from individual housing, from pairings with females, or after exposure to electroshock. Lactating females were studied in similar tests. Locust killing (predatory aggression) and restraint-induced target biting were also studied in male subjects. Cohabitation with females was generally a less effective means of inducing social conflict that individual housing. Maternal aggression was absent in some lines but was characteristic of genotypes with the most aggressive males. Correlations performed between the different tests of aggression (based on a combined score reflecting incidenceand intensity data) confirmed earlier claims that locust killing and target biting are distinct from intraspecific forms of attack. These data caution against ready extrapolation between different tests.

    Notes: Abstract The differences in flurbiprofen disposition in the aqueous humor and the plasma were examined after systemic doses. Steady state plasma concentrations of flurbiprofen (20–60 Μg/mL) were achieved via intravenous infusion to albino rabbits. Flurbiprofen demonstrated linear systemic kinetics throughout the dosing range, with constant body clearance and unbound fraction in plasma. At steady state, aqueous humor drug concentrations depended on the corresponding plasma drug concentration. Two clearance terms—CLs→o, the systemic clearance to ocular tissues, and CLo→s, the ocular clearance to systemic circulation—were used. After systemic doses, the drug concentration in the aqueous humor was related to that in the plasma as well as to the ratio of these two clearances. Flurbiprofen was extensively bound to plasma proteins and showed limited ocular distribution; its CLs→o to CLs→o tratio was very small. Thus, the concentration of flurbiprofen in the aqueous humor after systemic doses was lower than that obtained after ophthalmic doses. A plasmapheresis technique was utilized to lower the plasma protein concentrations to 60% of normal levels. As a consequence, flurbiprofen demonstrated reduced aqueous humor protein concentrations, increased unbound fractions in the plasma and the aqueous humor, elevated aqueous humor drug concentrations, and elevated total body clearance. The unbound body clearance stayed unchanged. Our study indicated that a drug should present a significant CLs→o/CLo→s ratio in order to achieve therapeutic concentrations in the eye via systemic doses. The drug-protein binding kinetics can be different between the plasma and the aqueous humor circulations. Because the ocular compariment is very small compared to the overall systemic distribution of flurbiprofen, it has little effect on the steady state systemic concentrations.
