Notes: Abstract Electrowinning of cobalt from a sulphate bath containing Na2SO4, NaF and H3BO3 individually and H3BO3 in combination with NaF and Na2SO4 was studied. From the preliminary study it was observed that a sulphate bath containing both NaF and H3BO3 gave the best results. The effects of various parameters, namely NaF, H3BO3 and cobalt concentrations, current density, bath temperature, bath pH, etc. on cathode current efficiency and on the nature of the deposit were studied. The results indicate that both H3BO3 and NaF in the sulphate bath contribute towards higher current efficiency and better deposit in the elecrowinning of cobalt.

Notes: Abstract A metallographic investigation of as-cast LM-13 aluminium-silicon alloy, solidified at different cooling rates (using permanent moulds or a single-roll melt spinner), is presented with special reference to the modification of eutectic silicon. and the refinement of primary aluminium. The refinement of microstructure with the increase in cooling rate is mainly attributed to the limited growth kinetics of the nucleated phase during solidification. The rapidly solidified ribbon was heat-treated in order to determine the microstructural stability at high temperature. The tensile strength, percentage elongation and hardness values of as-solidified and heat-treated samples correlate well with the changes in the microstructure observed.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents the results of57Fe Mössbauer Investigation of Co(en)3Fe(CN)6, a cation-anion complex where ‘en’ stands for ethylenediamine, for varlous temperatures from 300-88K. In this compound Iron exists in two oxidation states viz., Fe(III) and the abnormal Fe(IV) state. Quadrupole splitting as a function of temperature has been utilised to understand the crystal field splitting at the Fe-site.

Notes: Abstract Independent isomeric yield ratios of128Sb were determined radiochemically in the thermal neutron induced fission of241Pu and 34 MeV alpha particle induced fission of238U, both involving the same compound nucleus (242Pu). Fragment angular momenta estimated from the measured isomer ratios using the statistical model analysis showed significantly larger fragment angular momenta in the medium energy fissioning system compared to the low energy fissioning system. This has been attributed to the effect of higher excitation energy and angular momentum in the entrance channel leading to increased fragment temperature, moments of inertia and angular velocity. An attempt was made to calculate the fragment angular momentum in the medium energy fission using the Fermi gas model for the fissioning nucleus, taking into account the multichance fission, saddle shapes of the fissioning nuclei and the angular velocity components of the fissioning nuclei both along and orthogonal to the fission axis. The calculated angular momenta agree well with the experimental results.
