    Notes: The results of numerical investigations based on series analysis indicate clearly that the method of phantom fields constructs nontrivial, self-interacting scalar Euclidean boson field theories. It is found that these continuum theories arise as the scaling limit to normal critical points of lattice statistical mechanical models. The character of these theories is numerically indistinguishable from that of a classical theory on the lambda line near the tricritical point.

    Notes: We report a new tip for scanning tunneling microscopy and a tip repair procedure that allows one to reproducibly obtain atomic images of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite with previously inoperable tips. The tips are shown to be relatively oxide-free and highly resistant to oxidation. The tips are fabricated with graphite by two distinct methods.

    Notes: Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the recrystallization behavior of a buried amorphous layer in 3 MeV Si+-implanted (100) silicon at a dose of 5×1015 cm−2. The lower (deeper) amorphous/crystalline (a/c) interface is found to be more abrupt compared to the upper (closer to the surface) a/c interface. During recrystallization similar rates of advancement of the two a/c interfaces are observed. V-shaped dislocations are observed in the completely recrystallized layer. The defect density in the upper recrystallized region is found to be higher than that in the lower recrystallized region. These observations are correlated with the shape of the damage profile. The secondary defects grown at higher temperatures (〉750 °C) are found to be very stable and difficult to anneal out. The overall recrystallization behavior of the buried amorphous layer is found to be similar to that of lower energy implants.

    Notes: We have designed, built, and tested a pulsed gas-injection coaxial plasma gun driven by a 72-μF capacitor bank, with operating voltages of 60–80 kV (stored energy 130–230 kJ), and 1.6-MA, 1-μs rise-time current discharges. Using deuterium gas, we have obtained reliable delivery of all current to the gas and neutron yields of greater than 109. Current, voltage, inductance, and current position data are discussed and are compared with circuit solver models. Magnetic-probe and filtered scintillator photomultiplier detector array data on high-energy photon spectra were taken. A second puff-gas valve near the anode (inner electrode) axis at the muzzle end substantially improved the neutron yield.

    Notes: Hill notes that the calculated energy loss rate for a lightning channel found in the original paper [Phys. Fluids 29, 2736 (1986)] is significantly smaller than the rate he obtained.     Notes: Reactive polystyrene (OPS) and reactive polyethylene (CPE) with oxazoline and carboxylic acid functionality, respectively, were melt blended in a Rheomix mixer under a variety of conditions. The properties of these blends were examined and correlated with the compositions and mixing conditions such as shear rate, time, and temperature. An increase in torque was observed, which is believed related to chemical reaction between OPS and CPE. The difference between the maximum and minimum torque (Tmax-Tmin), increases from 48 to a maximum of 510 m-g for 10 and 40% CPE reacted blends, respectively, But on further increase in the CPE amount in the blend the torque increase drops reaching a final minimum value of 133 m-g for a blend with 90% CPE. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) studies reveal a single first order transition, due to CPE, for each of these polymer blends. Furthermore, evidence of the glass transition temperature for OPS diminishes with increasing CPE content and mixing time. Scanning Electron Micrographs (SEM) show a fine dispersion in these reactive blends, with particle size much smaller than a micron. Blends with 50% or more CPE have no distinguishable features as such. Mechanical properties such as elongation at break of reacted blends are improved over the nonreactive polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) blends. An intermolecular reaction between the OPS and CPE results in a graft polymer, which imparts improvement in the overall properties of these reacted blends. The maximum grafting reaction corresponds to 40% CPE blend, which is being evaluated as a potential compatibilizer.

    Notes: Analysis of the mechanisms underlying sex determination and sex differentiation in Drosophila has provided evidence for a complex but comprehensible regulatory hierarchy governing these developmental decisions. It is suggested here that the pattern of sexual differentiation and dosage compensation characteristic of the male is a default regulatory state. Recent results have provided, in addition, some surprising and intriguing conclusions: (1) that several of the critical controlling genes produce more transcripts than was predicted from the genetic analyses; (2) that setting of the alternative sex-specific states of the doublesex (dsx) locus involves differential transcript processing; and (3) that some aspects of sexual differentation require the prolonged action of certain elements of the regulatory hierarchy. These findings are discussed in connection with the current model of sex determination in Drosophila.

    Notes: As the first step in a cooperative effort to standardize the identification of the polypeptides of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, the sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) results obtained in 16 laboratories were compared. Although it was possible to correlate the positions of 16 of the major polypeptide bands, the cross-identification of many of the polypeptides was ambiguous, particularly in the low molecular weight range. Two-dimensional electrophoresis provided an improved means of separating and characterizing T. pallidum polypeptides as isolated molecular species. An approach to the unambiguous identification of treponemal polypeptides was outlined which will utilize two-dimensional electrophoresis in combination with specific properties attributable to individual proteins, including reactivity with monoclonal antibodies or monospecific antisera, biochemical and structural properties, and sequence information. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, two-dimensional electrophoresis in conjunction with immunoperoxidase staining was used to specifically identify three cloned T. pallidum proteins.

    Notes: Finite element analysis, applied to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) problem classes, presents a formal procedure for establishing the ingredients of a discrete approximation numerical solution algorithm. A classical Galerkin weak-statement formulation, formed on a Taylor series extension of the conservation law system, is developed herein that embeds a set of parameters eligible for constraint according to specification of suitable norms. The derived family of Taylor weak statements is shown to contain, as special cases, over one dozen independently derived CFD algorithms published over the past several decades for the high speed flow problem class. A theoretical analysis is completed that facilitates direct qualitative comparisons. Numerical results for definitive linear and non-linear test problems permit direct quantitative performance comparisons.

    Notes: This paper develops and analyses individual construction aspects of an efficient and accurate finite element algorithm for prediction of viscous and turbulent flow fields of impact in aerodynamics. The theoretical construction employs a Taylor weak statement (TWS) for coincident embedding of stability mechanisms within a classic Galerkin finite element formulation of semi-discrete approximation error orthogonalization. A wide variety of the stabilizing mechanisms of independently derived CFD algorithms are contained within the TWS theory. An implicit construction that meets the requirement of efficient convergence to steady state is developed. The theoretical asymptotic error estimates of the TWS finite element algorithm for supersonic and viscous boundary layer flows are verified. Application to a three-dimensional turbulent flow is cited.
