Description: Attention is given to a new approach to solving full potential equations about arbitrary configurations. Numerical algorithms from such fields as finite elements, preconditioned Krylov subspace methods, discrete Fourier analysis, and integral equations are combined to take advantage of the size and speed of current and emerging supercomputers. On the basis of this appraoch, a robust, efficient and easy to use computer code referred to as TRANAIR has been developed for transonic analysis of complex geometries.

Description: An upwind-biased implicit approximate factorization Navier-Stokes algorithm is applied to a variety of steady transonic airfoil cases, using the NACA 0012, RAE 2822, and Jones supercritical airfoils. The thin-layer form of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations is used. Both the CYBER 205 and CRAY 2 supercomputers are utilized, with average computational speeds of about 18 and 16 microsec/gridpoint/iteration, respectively. Lift curves, drag polars, and variations in drag coefficient with Mach number are determined for the NACA 0012 and Jones supercritical airfoils. Also, several cases are computed for comparison with experiment. The effect of grid density and grid extent on a typical turbulent airfoil solution is shown. An algebraic eddy-viscosity turbulence model is used for all of the computations.

Notes: A range of hydroxy-terminated polymyrcenes has been prepared using hydrogen peroxide initiated polymerization of pyrolysate grade, β-myrcene in n-butanol solution at 100°C. An oligomeric fraction, containing a large proportion of dimeric material formed via the Diels-Alder reaction, always accompanies the major polymeric fraction. Procedures are described for the removal of this oligomeric material. Polyols so prepared and purified had number average molecular weights (Mn) between 4000 and 2000 g mol-1 at low and high initiator concentrations, respectively, with corresponding number average functionalities (fn) between 1.3 and 2.3 and polydispersities (Mw/Mn) of ∼ 1.3. The microstructure of the polyols was investigated using NMR spectroscopy from which the main mode of propagation during polymerization of myrcene was deduced to be 1,4 addition across the conjugated double bonds. Glass transition temperatures of the polymyrcenes measured by differential scanning calorimetry were in the range -50--60°C.

Notes: Selectively deuterated poly(arylene ether sulfones) were prepared for neutron scattering studies and for deuterium NMR investigations. The availability of these model macromolecules permits molecular-level identification of the motions responsible for the low temperature relaxations that have been observed in the dynamic mechanical spectra of these engineering polymers. Three labeled sites on the appropriate monomers (bisphenol-A and 4,4′-dichlorodiphenylsulfone) were prepared from deuterated intermediates and characterized via chromatographic, spectroscopic, and thermal analysis. The deuterium exhcange between methyl and aromatic sites that occurred during synthesis was quantified. These labeled monomers were mixed with hydrogenous monomers to synthesize high molecular weight, selectively deuterated poly(arylene ether sulfones). A synthetic technique involving N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone/potassium carbonate was employed to afford high molecular weight polymers. The polymers were characterized by FT-IR, proton, carbon, and deuterium NMR, intrinsic viscosities, and thermal analysis. Molecular weights of the labeled polymers were similar to unlabeled systems.

Notes: Spectroscopic and potentiometric methods have been used to study the ionic properties of several N-substituted acrylamide copolymers that display unusual ion-binding character. The ionic groups and the amide groups (both on the same repeating unit and on adjacent acrylamide units) in the copolymers are found to chelate calcium ions. The stabilizing effect of this amide chelation is found to be dependent on copolymer composition. A model is proposed to explain the unusual binding behavior of the acrylamide polymers. This involves the formation of an intramonomer chelate or one with neighboring acrylamide units that prevent precipitation of the polymers.

Notes: A series of poly(styrene)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) core-shell latexes were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization. The dried latex was dissolved in toluene and then cast on the surface of water to form a very thin film (60-90 nm). Phase separation in the thin film was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electron micrographs of these thin films yielded fine structure and interesting morphology that was unattainable by ultramicrotoming of the corresponding compression-molded specimens. Glass transition temperatures and percent grafted polystyrene were correlated with the TEM results. As grafting increases, mixing of the two phases improves, with the resulting Tg value being between the two Tg's of poly(styrene) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile).

Notes: The free radical polymerization of o-methacryloyloxybenzoic acid using acetone and benzene as solvents, in the interval 30-120°C, is investigated. The polymerization in benzene has a precipitant character. However, when acetone is used as solvent, at reaction temperatures higher than 60-70°C, the polymerization deviates from the classic free radical mechanism and, beside the addition of monomer molecules to growing chain ends, the release of salicylic acid and the formation of cyclic anhydride structures of glutaric type in the main chain has been detected. The microstructure of polymers obtained has also been studied by the transformation into the corresponding poly(methyl methacrylate)s.
