Notizen: The facilitated transport of CO2 through ion exchange membranes containing organic amine counterions was studied. Steady state CO2 fluxes were measured from pure gas streams and mixtures with CH4. Facilitation factors for CO2 up to 26.7 were calculated from transport data. Transport measurements were binary mixtures of CO2 and CH4 yielded ratios of CO2 flux to CH4 flux ranging from 29.0 to 264. Conversion of flux ratios to permeabilities yielded separation factors up to 551 for CO2 over CH4, which are compared to literature data for polymeric membranes. The transport data support a mobile, reactive-carrier facilitated transport mechanism with a carbamate zwitterion complex. Effective diffusivities for CO2 and the carrier-gas complex were determined from transport data. A reaction equilibrium model predicted facilitation factors that were in very good agreement with experimental values. Potential applications are also discussed.

Notizen: Microtubules are important components of the cytoskeleton of plant cells and play key roles in plant growth and morphogenesis. Recent molecular studies have begun to elucidate the structure and expression of plant genes coding for the major components of microtubules, α- and β-tubulin. Tubulin amino acid sequences deduced from the DNA sequences of eight higher plant tubulin genes are 79-87% homologous with constitutively expressed mammalian tubulins. The genome of the model plant system Arabidopsis thaliana contains four dispersed α-tubulin sequences and at least seven β-tubulin sequences, only two of which appear to be linked. Of the five A. thaliana genes whose expression has been analyzed, the transcripts of one α-tubulin and one β-tubulin gene are constitutively expressed in roots, leaves, and flowers. A second α-tubulin gene is expressed predominately in flowers; the transcripts of the second and third β-tubulin genes are found predominately in leaves or in roots, respectively.

Notizen: Development and innervation of the lymph heart musculature of chicken, emu, rhea, and duck was studied by electron microscopy at posthatch ages from 3 days to adulthood. Development of innervation was monitored by acetylcholinesterase staining. Horseradish peroxidase was used to determine the extent of the transverse tubule network. Chickens were unusual among these birds in that lymph heart myocytes had already undergone a definitive differentiation and degeneration by 3 days. In ducks and ratite birds, lymph heart myocytes more slowly but progressively differentiate a cytomorphology that does not conform in all characteristics to cardiac or skeletal muscle and even resembles in some aspects, smooth muscle. Myofibrils become the dominant cytoplasmic structure, transverse tubules form ‘internal couplings’ with agranular reticulum cisternae, and ‘external couplings’ are formed between myocytes at myomyal junctions. The myomyal junctions also contain AChE-positive reaction product and some subplasmalemmal vesicles that lack a dense core. The lymph heart myocardium of ducks of 2 weeks demonstrated mitotic figures. In adult ducks the myosatellite cell numbers diminish and a characteristic pattern of myocyte degeneration appears. In juvenile ducks and ratites some myocytes differentiate to conductile cells, much as the conductile myocytes and myofibers of the blood heart. The lymph heart innervation is described, and the role of nerve in differentiation and maintenance of myocyte morphology in the lymph heart is discussed.

Notizen: A practical application of advanced, model-based, multivariable control to a pilot plant packed-bed reactor carrying out highly exothermic butane hydrogenolysis reactions is presented. The system is first stabilized by using butane flow rate to control the reactor hot-spot temperature. Propane production and butane conversion are then controlled using multivariable controllers that manipulate the hot-spot temperature set point and hydrogen flow rate. The controller designs are based on multivariable transfer function models developed using multivariable time series and process identification methods. Two types of multivariable controllers are applied. The first is an internal model controller (IMC) utilizing a stabilized approximation of the model inverse and a tunable exponential filter. The second is a linear-quadratic (LQ) controller design using pulse transfer function models to characterize the process dynamics and autoregressive-moving average models to characterize the disturbances. The optimal control solution was arrived at via a spectral factorization solution to the Wiener-Hopf equations. The results indicate that both designs, if well tuned, provide good performance and robustness over a wide range of operation.

Notizen: Numerical calculations of the velocity and temperature fields were conducted for unsteady flows over a single circular cylinder and a bundle of cylinders. Periodic disturbances, natural or externally imposed, were considered. Periodic and averaged heat transfer rates were examined. Results compare favorably with experimental data. Calculations were carried out to predict heat transfer rates in regimes of unsteady flows that have not been tested experimentally.

Notizen: Prior experimental study by Haldeman and Botty has demonstrated that catalyst regeneration rates vary with conversion, showing a nearly constant rate of reaction in the early stages of regeneration and falling off rapidly at higher conversion levels. This peculiar reaction behavior calls for explanation in terms of pore structural changes. In this work a mathematical model is developed based on the interaction between catalyst pore structure and coke distribution in the pores. The model is able to associate overall regeneration kinetics with alternative pore-distributed coke deposition patterns. Results exhibit a slight shallow rate maximum at an intermediate conversion level, in agreement with the prior experimental report. The model makes coke distribution in the pores accessible to experimental determination. The numerical results indicate that among pore structures with the same mean and overall pore volume, a larger variance offers a higher threshold for coke loading; for a given degree of dispersion, a smaller mean allows a higher coke loading.

Notizen: A dynamic response method was used to measure the volumetric mass transfer coefficient for oxygen in a mechanically agitated vessel containing an aqueous suspension of 66 μm glass beads. At constant stirring speed and superficial gas velocity the volumetric gas transfer coefficient kLa was found to decrease with solids loading. A generalized equation correlated the results in terms of the volume concentration of the solids, the total power input per slurry volume, and the superficial gas velocity.
