Notes: : Mathematical optimization techniques are used to study the operation and design of a single, multi-purpose reservoir system. Optimal monthly release policies are derived for Hoover Reservoir, located in Central Ohio, using chance-constrained linear programming and dynamic programming-regression methodologies. Important characteristics of the former approach are derived, discussed, and graphically illustrated using Hoover Reservoir as a case example. Simulation procedures are used to examine and compare the overall performance of the optimal monthly reservoir release policies derived under the two approaches. Results indicate that, for the mean detention time and the corresponding safe yield target water supply release under existing design of Hoover Reservoir, the dynamic programming policies produce lower average annual losses (as defined by a two-sided quadratic loss function) while achieving at least as high reliability levels when compared to policies derived under the chance-constrained linear programming method. In making this comparison, the reservoir release policies, although not identical, are assumed to be linear. This restricted form of the release policy is necessary to make the chance-constrained programming method mathematically tractable.

Notes: We have studied the sensitivity of health impacts from nuclear reactor accidents, as predicted by the CRAC2 computer code, to the following sources of uncertainty: (1) the model for plume rise, (2) the model for wet deposition, (3) the meteorological bin-sampling procedure for selecting weather sequences with rain, (4) the dose conversion factors for inhalation as affected by uncertainties in the particle size of the carrier aerosol and the clearance rates of radionuclides from the respiratory tract, (5) the weathering half-time for external ground-surface exposure, and (6) the transfer coefficients for terrestrial foodchain pathways. Predicted health impacts usually showed little sensitivity to use of an alternative plume-rise model or a modified rain-bin structure in bin-sampling. Health impacts often were quite sensitive to use of an alternative wet-deposition model in single-trial runs with rain during plume passage, but were less sensitive to the model in bin-sampling runs. Uncertainties in the inhalation dose conversion factors had important effects on early injuries in single-trial runs. Latent cancer fatalities were moderately sensitive to uncertainties in the weathering half-time for ground-surface exposure, but showed little sensitivity to the transfer coefficients for terrestrial foodchain pathways. Sensitivities of CRAC2 predictions to uncertainties in the models and parameters also depended on the magnitude of the source term, and some of the effects on early health effects were comparable to those that were due only to selection of different sets of weather sequences in bin-sampling.

Notes: The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a decision analysis technique that uses judgments from a group of relevant decision makers and hierarchical decomposition to derive a set of ratio-scaled utility measures for decision alternatives. This paper addresses a number of design issues involved in the implementation of AHP for large-scale systems. Specifically, it describes the use of incomplete experimental designs for simplifying data-collection tasks. The effects of reducing the size of the hierarchy through attribute deletion and the effects of including identical attributes on any given level also are evaluated.

Notes: Differences between the isolines in a multiline may result in differences in competitive ability and lead to changes in the frequency of the components after a few cycles of multiplication. Alternative-row design of Hanson et al. (1961) was used to detect and characterize the presence of intergenotypic interactions among eight isolines of a multiline of bread-wheat‘Kalyansona’. The material was grown in 1.5 meter row plots using a unique sequence of arrangement. The observations were recorded with respect to plant height and grain yield per plan:. The results of the analysis showed the components of variance for average competitive ability and specific combination to be highly significant, indicating the existence of intergenotypic interactions. Significant genotypic differences between isolines revealed that the genotype of the recurrent parent had not been fully reconstituted. On the basis of the effect of the border genotype averaged over all the genotypes (Ck.), the genotypes were classified into four groups, viz. a) highly depressive, b) mildly depressive, c) mildly cooperative and d) highly cooperative. Categories c and d were indicated as useful for the synthesis of multilines.

Notes: The inheritance of resistance to dry root rot of chickpea caused by Rhizoctonia bataticola was studied. Parental F1 and F2 populations of two resistant and two susceptible parents, along with 49 F1 progenies of one of the resistant × susceptible crosses were rested for their reaction to dry root rot using the blotting-paper technique. All F, plants of the resistant × susceptible crosses were resistant; the F2 generation fitted a 3 resistant: 1 susceptible ratio indicating monogenic inheritance, with resistance dominant over susceptibility. F3 family segregation data confirmed the results. No segregation occurred among the progeny of resistant × resistant and susceptible × susceptible crosses.

Notes: Two bulk experimental strains of induced autotetraploids,‘Purple tetraploid bulk’ (PTB) and ‘White tetraploid bulk’ of Catharanthus roseus were evaluated along with the diploid ‘Purple’ variety (PDB) and a diploid pure line selection PS-3 in four environments consisting of combinations of two levels each of plant spacing and nitrogen at Bangalore and Hyderabad during 1983—84 and in two additional environments at Bangalore during 1984—85. PTB, in general, performed better than PDB at closer plant spacings, especially in the absence of nitrogen application. The highest increase in economic yield (leaf + root yield) over PDB was recorded by PTB with 45 × 30 cm plant spacing and no nitrogen fertilization. The highest economic yield of PTB (obtained with 30 × 30 cm spacing and 100 kg N per ha) was 26 % higher than the highest economic yield of PDB. There were no significant differences between PTB and PDB for content of total alkaloids in leaves within all the environments during both years. Strain × environment interactions were significant for content of total alkaloids in roots during 1983—84. During 1984—85, PTB and PDB did not significantly differ from each other for content of total alkaloids in roots.

Notes: Magnitudes of intrinsic viscosity of tomato serum determined from the slopes of three equations were not identical, but they showed common trends. Intrinsic viscosities of serums from concentrates obtained by evaporation of juice were lower than those obtained by evaporation of serum and reverse osmosis concentration of serum. Their magnitudes also were lower for serums from diluted and sheared concentrates.

Notes: Polyphenoloxidase (PPO) activity was estimated in the whole seed and its morphological components of germinated chickpea, pigeon-pea, greengram and blackgram. Increase in enzyme activity on germination was highest in blackgram and lowest in chickpea. Pyrogallol oxidizing activity was more predominant in the legume seeds and the seed fractions. Embryo was richest in PPO activity but the cotyledons were the major contributor to the whole PPO activity. Except in black-gram, the seed coat fraction was devoid of any PPO activity. The seed coat of pigeonpea and chickpea contained a water soluble and heat stable PPO inhibitor. Induction of the enzyme on germination did not fully explain the reduction in tannin content of the legume seeds. Role of polyphenol oxidase in seed germination is briefly discussed.
