    Notes: Abstract. Fish mortality in the River Umia, near Villagarcia de Arosa, Pontevedra, Spain, which occurred after a discharge from a food sewage works, is studied. Physico-chemical parameters of water samples from sewage and from the River Umia were studied and concentrations of ammonia sufficiently high to cause toxic effects in fish (702 mg/1 and 302 mg/1 as total ammonia) were found. The toxicity of two concentrations of ammonia was investigated on goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), using water quality values the same as found in the River Umia, to obtain the same concentrations of un-ionized ammonia (2·13 mg/1 and 0·91 mg/1). Fish exposed to high concentrations died within 24 h and three of six, which were exposed to the lowest concentration died within 96h. All fish at first showed symptoms of hyper excitability and hyperventilation, and at times of rest showed a decrease in respiration. Post-mortem findings generally included gill congestion and haemorrhage.

    Notes: Cell wall fragments, isolated from dark-grown Lupinus albus L. (cv. multolupa) hypocotyls, and purified by washing with Triton X-100, did not show detectable contamination by enzyme markers of cytosol or endoplasmic reticulum in which peroxidase activity was also located by electron microscopy. Peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) isoenzymes, solubilized from these cell wall fractions by high saline forces, showed a high affinity towards guaiacyl type substrates, whereas syringyl type substrates were not oxidized. On the other hand, both the isoenzyme patterns and the substrate specificity of these cell wall isoperoxidases could be altered by chromatographic and denaturating/renaturating procedures, which break the protein-phenol interactions, and this suggests the presence of phenol-induced conformers. These results draw attention to the origin of the enzymatic polymorphism, and catalytic properties, of the peroxidase activity located in the cell wall.

    Notes: Abstract Electron microscopy of preparations of the Myxocococcus coralloides D autolytic supernatants revealed the presence of phage-tail-like particles. The particles consisted of a core, a contractile sheath and a baseplate with fibers. The induction of the defective prophage occurred when the cultures reached the stationary phase, but the events occurring during induction did not lead to cell lysis. Particles nerver appeared during exponential growth. They were not observed when M. coralloides D grew on solid media, either. Purified samples of phage tails were able to inhibit most of the myxobacterial strains which were tested when the particles were in the extended state, but they were unable to multiply on the sensitive strains.

    Notes: The flow properties of concentrated solutions of polyarylate from bisphenol A/50:50 isophthalic acid: terephthalic acid in m-cresol are studied. The results are discussed in terms of critical concentration Cc and critical molecular weight Mc for the onset of entanglements. Values of Cc = 8,2 wt.-% and Mc ≈ 3500 are obtained. The dependence of the Newtonian viscosities with temperature allows to obtain different energies of activation of flow for each polyarylate/m-cresol system, ranging from 9 to 13 kcal/mol (= 37,7 to 54,4 kJ/mol).     Notes: The changes in the molar mass of high molecular weight polyethylene, in o-dichlorobenzene, with time are examined using viscometry. The results show that the molar mass decreases with time and that the observed decay can be satisfactorily explained by a simple degradation model. Commercial antioxidants can inhibit the degradation process if the appropriate concentration is chosen. Thus, at very low concentrations a polynuclear phenol shows good antioxidant behavior but this decreases with an increase in concentration due to direct oxidation of the inhibitor. Conversely, zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate shows the best stabilizing activity which increases with concentration. The results are explained on the basis of the established mechanistic action of these compounds and show that viscometry is not an accurate method for measuring the molar mass of high molecular weight polyethylene samples unless the appropriate conditions are chosen. Even with the best inhibitor, some degradation is still observed.

    Notes: The crystal structures of two polyamides, poly(glycyl-β-alanyl-β-alanine) (nylon 2/3/3) and poly(methylene malonamide) (nylon 1,3), have been investigated by x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Crystallization of nylon 2/3/3 from a solution in a mixture of water and formic acid yields lamellar single crystals exhibiting a triangular habit. Doughnut-shaped morphologies diffracting as single crystals are obtained in the crystallization of nylon 1,3. A helical structure of the type known as polyglycine II is found for both polyamides. In such a structure, chains are intermolecularly linked by hydrogen bonds giving a hexagonal lattice of a = 4.79 Å. Insufficient data are available to determine precisely the conformation of the chains. We assume a threefold helix having c = 35.2 Å and c = 18.0 Å for nylon 2/3/3 and nylon 1,3 respectively. No sign of the layered structure familiar in polyamides has been detected for these polymers throughout the experiments made in the present study.

    Notes: In this paper, the synthesis of different catalytic systems based on the reduction of TiCl4 by Grignard compounds has been systematically studied. The catalysts exhibited the highest activities when used in the copolymerization of ethylene with n-hexene. The profile of the kinetic curves also changed when the comonomer was present during polymerization. By thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques, it could be found that the incorporation of the comonomer to the polymer chain brings about a decrease in the polymer crystallinities and an increase in the porosities of the growing particles. Due to that, the diffusion of the monomer to the catalytic active centers takes place more easily, consequently increasing the polymerization rate. In addition, catalysts control better the morphology (size and shape) of the nascent polymer particles when used for copolymerization.
