Notes: Abstract Intraspecific variation has been found for several pollination-related characteristics in two isolated populations of the self-incompatible treeAcacia terminalis: floral characteristics including colour and flowering time; style length; size and colour of extrafloral nectaries on the leaf petioles; chemical components of the extrafloral nectar; different taxa of bee pollinators; and frequency differences in bird pollinators. These differences possibly reflect the evolution of two different pollination syndromes within this species.

Notes: Abstract The isotropic lineshape of the v1 (A1) stretching mode of the nitrate ion in solutions of sodium nitrate has been studied at 25°C as a function of NaNO3 concentration ranging from 0.1 to 6M. The pressure dependence has been determined for 1 and 6M solutions at pressures ranging from 1 bar to 3 kbar. The isotropic band becomes more asymmetric with increasing concentration, and its v1 peak frequency undergoes a blue shift both with increased concentration and increased pressure. At low concentration the vibrational correlation function is well described by the Kubo formula, whereas at higher concentration it becomes more Gaussian. The experimental data indicate that the v1 vibrational lineshape in aqueous solutions of NaNO3 is dominated by strong intermolecular interactions which produce inhomogeneous broadening at higher concentration.

Notes: Abstract When given a choice of cotton (host) and ground cherry (non host) in a close range situation, Heliothis virescens (F.), the tobacco budworm, depends primarily on contact chemoreception and mechanoreception, and not olfaction or vision, to discriminate between these two plant species for oviposition. Further, in the presence of a certain level of hairiness (the non-host plant, ground cherry, has short capitate hairs), the females are capable of discriminating between these two plants based on contact chemosensory cues, if at least one pair of tarsi is intact. The contact chemosensilla on the ovipositor do not seem to be important for this purpose. These results are discussed in relation to the sensory cues and receptors for oviposition in other Lepidoptera, especially moths.

Notes: Summary Cultured spinal cord explants in which little spontaneous bioelectric activity was present showed, when monitored using sensory ganglion-evoked monosynaptic action potentials, diffuse innervation by ingrowing afferent fibers at 3–4 weeks in vitro. In contrast, highly active cultures of the same age showed a strong tendency for functional sensory connections to be made within the dorsal half of the cord. Regional specificity was present in mature cultures (4–5 weeks in vitro), however, even when their spontaneous activity level was low. The results support earlier results using tetrodotoxin, and make it appear likely that centrally generated neuronal discharges can influence the topography of afferent terminals within the developing spinal cord.

Notes: Abstract An extension theorem for Pexider's equation is proved and used to generalize the results in [4] to cases with weights with more than one constraint and to more general domains in a form which can be applied to multiobjective linear programming.

Notes: Summary Chronic blockade of spontaneous nerve impulses by means of tetrodotoxin leads to abnormally diffuse afferent projections into spinal cord cross-sections cultured for two to six weeks in vitro. In addition, even untreated explants which show a low level of spontaneous cord discharges failed to develop the normal degree of dorsal pathway selectivity. It is therefore concluded that centrally generated neuronal activity may play an important role in eliminating ‘exuberant’ connections which, during early development, are transiently present in this part of the nervous system.

Notes: Summary Observations of the foraging behavior of six captive dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) are used to test the assumptions and predictions of optimal diet choice models (Pyke et al. 1977) that include nutrients (Pulliam 1975). The birds sequentially encountered single seeds of niger thistle (Guizotia abyssinica) and of canary grass (Phalaris canariensis) on an artificial substrate in the laboratory. Niger thistle seeds were preferred by all birds although their profitability in terms of energy intake (J/s) was less than the profitability of canary grass seeds. Of four nutritional components used to calculate profitabilities (mg/s) lipid content was the only characteristic that could explain the junco's seed preference. As predicted by optimal diet theory the probability of consuming niger thistle seeds was independent of seed abundance. However, the consumption of 71–84% rather than 100% of the seeds encountered is not consistent with the prediction of all-or-nothing selection. Canary grass seeds were consumed at a constant rate (no./s) independent of the number of seeds encountered. This consumption pattern invalidates a model that assumes strict maximization. However, it is consistent with the assumption that canary grass seeds contain a nutrient which is required in minimum amounts to meet physiological demands (Pulliam 1975). These experiments emphasize the importance of incorporating nutrients into optimal foraging models and of combining seed preference studies with studies of the metabolic requirements of consumers.

Notes: Summary Multiple drug resistance has been shown to be associated with amplification/increased expression of a gene designated MDR. The localization of one member of the MDR gene family, MDR1, to the long arm of chromosome 7 by in situ hybridization is reported.

Notes: Summary The parental origin of five X isochromosomes were determined using 11 DnA markers. The isochromosome was derived from a maternal X chromosome in three cases and from a paternal X chromosome in two. Unexpected heterozygosity was detected for the proximal Xp region in one individual in whom the i(Xq) chromosome was paternally derived. This was confirmed by in situ hybridisation. A mode of formation of isochromosomes by breakage and reunion between the sister chromatids of the arms of an X chromosome is proposed to account for this. Sister chromatid breakage and reunion can be considered as a significant mechanism for the origin of i(Xq) chromosomes.
