    Notes: Abstract NON-VON is a highly parallel non-von Neumann supercomputer presently under construction at Columbia University. The basis for NON-VON's significant cost/performance advantage lies in a highly unusual application of VLSI technology to the realization of massive computational parallelism. This paper outlines the manner in which the emerging technology of VLSI circuits is employed in NON-VON to achieve this advantage. Particular emphasis is given to novel aspects of the design, layout, and operation of the NON-VON processing element, eight of which are to be embedded within each integrated circuit chip.

    Notes: Abstract Conventional random access memories are capable only of writing data into and reading data from the storage location corresponding to a given address. The availability of VLSI circuits containing hundreds of thousands of switching devices, however, has recently made practical the implementation of “active” memory chips capable of performing a range of complex operations on their stored data. Such designs are characterized by the extensive intermingling of processing and memory resources within a single chip to achieve the rapid and cost-effective parallel execution of operations relevant to such tasks as image processing, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and database management. This paper presents a brief survey of a number of active memory chips that have been implemented or proposed, along with a more detailed examination of a particular active memory circuit, the NON-VON 3 primary processing subsystem chip.

    Notes: Abstract. An analysis of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is made within the colour dipole model. We compare and contrast two models for the dipole cross-section which have been successful in describing structure function data. Both models agree with the available cross section data on DVCS from HERA. We give predictions for various azimuthal angle asymmetries in HERA kinematics and for the DVCS cross section in the THERA region.

    Notes: Abstract The dimensiond=4 gluon condensateφ 1 is determined from an analysis of charmonium, taking model dependent estimates ofd=6.8 condensates into account. ForS-waves, there is a compatibility region, where both these and model dependent higher state corrections to ground state dominance are small, enablingφ 1 to be determined from a fit to the data. ForP-waves the estimated higher dimension contributions are large in the region of ground state dominance, and noφ 1 determination is possible. Theφ 1 value obtained from the fit to theS-wave ratios is 3 5 times bigger than that obtained by RRY using the plateau method. The methods are compared for the vector current. We show that the higher state correction used by RRY does not fit the data; and that the plateau method is much more sensitive to thed=6.8 condensates than the ratio used here. When reasonable estimates of both these and the higher state corrections are taken into account, there is compatibility between the two methods.

    Notes: Abstract Deposition of micrometer-scale tungsten, molybdenum and platinum lines with the aid of the uv light from an argon-ion laser was investigated. Tungsten and molybdenum were deposited from their corresponding carbonyls and platinum from an acetylacetonate compound. High-quality metal conductors could be achieved for tungsten and platinum using a combined photolytic and pyrolytic, or “hybrid”, deposition scheme. The resistivity for these two deposited metals was approximately twice the bulk value. For molybdenum the deposition process was fast and dominated by the pyrolysis; the corresponding line resistivity was slightly higher than for the two other metals.

    Notes: Abstract Single-mode operation of a KrF laser oscillator has been achieved for the first time. The laser medium is pumped by an electron beam which allows excitation for a much longer duration than with discharge pumping. The long excitation time, together with the use of a short oscillator cavity with a low single-pass gain, allows many roundtrips before saturation is reached. This makes line-narrowing easier and single-mode operation has been achieved using only two intracavity etalons.

    Notes: Abstract The zygote cell wall of Chlamydomonas reinhardii has been studied using structural, chemical and immunological methods. Monoclonal antibodies and polyclonal antisera that were originally raised to the major hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins of the vegetative cell wall were used to probe the zygote wall for common antigenic components. These antibodies cross-reacted strongly and specifically with components of the zygote cell wall, and were used to show the origin, route of transport, and the location of these antigens within the zygote cell wall. The zygote cell wall contained about 10% protein, with hydroxyproline accounting for 22.5 mol % of the total amino acids present. Glucose was the most abundant sugar residue, and accounted for 56% of the total sugar present. Gas liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry showed the presence of a (1-3)β-d-glucan as the major structural polysaccharide within the zygote cell wall. The (1-3)β-d-glucan was detected and localised within the zygote cell wall by immunogold labelling of thin sections. Using an antiserum directed against (1-3)β-d-linked glucose units, this polysaccharide was found to be consistently present within the non-staining layer of both young and mature zygote cell walls. (1-3)β-d-Glucan was also detected in other wall layer using higher concentrations of antiserum. No intracellular labelling was found, indicating that the plasmamembrane is the site for the synthesis of this polysaccharide within the Chlamydomonas zygote.
