Notes: Abstract Based on experimental work on the ontogeny of the electroretinogram circadian rhythm in crayfish, we present a mathematical model simulating changes in both frequency and amplitude of the electroretinogram oscillation during several developmental stages until shortly before the adult age. Simultaneously, we propose a hypothetical oscillation in the hormonal release whose frequency is imposed on the electroretinogram oscillation. The model consists of two coupled nonlinear oscillators in which a dynamical response is obtained mainly through an Andronov-Hopf bifurcation. Through the construction of the model, a biological hypothesis about the essential elements underlying the ERG circadian rhythm and their interrelations is formulated and discussed.

Notes: Abstract A general model of zymogen activation is proposed and explicit kinetic equations for the time courses of the various species and products involved are given. These equations are valid for the whole course of the reaction and therefore for both the transient phase and the steady state. This model is sufficiently general to include mechanisms possessing one or more steps of zymogen activation besides possible steps of inhibition (reversible or irreversible) or inactivation.

Notes: Abstract We report lasing for the first time in nickel on the neon-like J=0→1, 3p→3s transition at 231 Å as well as several weaker transitions including the J=2»1 lines at 298 Å and 304 Å. Amplification is seen only when the prepulse technique of using a low intensity prepulse before the main optical drive pulse is used to illuminate the nickel target. The prepulse technique is also shown to produce lasing in copper and dramatically improve the output of the germanium laser.

Notes: Abstract Starting from work by F. A. Berezin, an earlier paper by the author obtained an invariant star product on every nonexceptional symmetric Kähler space. This would be a generalization to those spaces of the star product on ℝ2n corresponding to Wick quantization. In this Letter we consider, via geometric quantization, the unitary operators corresponding to geodesic symmetries, and we define a Weyl quantization (first defined by Berezin on rank 1 spaces) in a way similar to the way in which the Weyl quantization can be obtained from the Wick quantization on ℝ2n . We then calculate every Hochschild 2-cochain of another invariant star product, equivalent to the Wick one, which would be a generalization to those spaces of the Moyal star product on ℝ2n . M. Cahen and S. Gutt have already provided a theorem of existence and essential unicity of an invariant star product on every irreducible Kähler symmetric space.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of significant solar activity for the northern and southern solar hemispheres from 1964 through 1979 is studied. Two 90-degree wide active longitudes, separated 180 degrees and rotating with a velocity 1% faster than the solar surface, are proposed.

Notes: Abstract Magnetic after-effects in vacancy-doped magnetite at room temperature are considered on the basis of a statistical thermodynamic treatment. In this paper we study the kinetics of a very small vacancy concentration distributed on the four non-equivalent octahedral sites of the inverse spinel structure. It is to be noted that satisfactory agreement is found between recent experimental results and the theoretical model.

Notes: Abstract Triiodothyronine added at 0.1 nM to 3T3-F442A cells cultured in adipogenic medium having endogenous hormone concentrations similar to those of hypothyroid serum stimulated adipose conversion; activities of both lipogenic enzymes, glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme, increased with hormone treatment. The number of adipocytes was also augmented by L-T3 addition but the number of fat cell clusters remained the same as compared to non-treated cultures, suggesting that thyroid hormone increased the number of adipocytes probably through stimulating selective multiplication of precursor adipose cells. Hormone addition to cells cultured with non-adipogenic medium did not promote conversion showing that L-T3 is not an adipogenic factor by itself. Triiodothyronine added at concentrations similar to those found in hyperthyroidism, from 10 nM up to 10 µM, also increased the proportion of adipocytes without changing the number of fat cell clusters, but they decreased the activity of both lipogenic enzymes and lipid accumulation in mature adipocytes. It can be concluded that during 3T3-F442A differentiation into adipocytes L-T3 increases the number of differentiated adipocytes and, at low concentrations, also enhances lipogenic enzyme activities, whereas at the hyperthyroid hormone levels these enzyme activities are significantly reduced, remaining at levels similar to those of cells cultured with hypothyroid medium. This cloned cell line seems to be a useful model to study thyroid hormone action at both molecular and cellular level.

Notes: Abstract To address the relationship between chromatin structure and histone gene expression, the nucleosomal organization of a cell cycle-dependent human H4 histone gene in a bovine papilloma virus (BPV) minichromosome was examined. The nucleosome repeat length of the human H4 histone gene, maintained as a stable episome in a C127 mouse cell line designated 1–8 [1], was compared with that of the chromosomal copy of the H4 gene in human (HeLa) cells. In both cell lines, the H4 histone gene is predominantly expressed during the S phase of the cell cycle. The nucleosome repeat length of total HeLa cell and C127 mouse cell chromatin was similarly examined. Nuclei were digested with micrococcal nuclease and the DNA was fractionated electrophoretically, transferred to nitrocellulose filters and hybridized with radiolabelled (32P) cloned DNA probes. The nucleosome repeat length of the H4 gene, as an episome in the C127 mouse cell (153 ± 8) and as an integrated copy in a HeLa cell (163 ± 10) was considerably shorter than total genomic host cell (C127) (190 ± 5) or HeLa cell chromatin (183 ± 7). Our results indicate that the episomal H4 histone gene is packaged as chromatin. Moreover, the shortened nucleosome repeat length of the H4 gene, both as an episome or integrated chromosome sequence, suggests that the repeat length is characteristic of the gene and may be functionally related to its cell cycle regulated expression.

Notes: Abstract Choricotyle anisotremi n. sp. is described from the gills and on the inner surface of the operculum of Anisotremus scapularis (Pomadasyidae) from the Chilean coast. Distinct characteristics of the new species are: presence of an oval accessory sclerite on the inner quadrant of the clamp adjacent to the accessory sucker; 12 genital hooks; short and stout peduncles, the last pair of which are closely apposed; a lobed seminal receptacle; and a fan-like posthaptor without a terminal lappet.
