Notizen: The fusion welding behavior of a medium density polyethylene resin has been studied for a wide range of heating rates using a recently developed test methodology. With this method, the thermal and physical phenomena occurring at the interface of two thin polyethylene pieces assembled by fusion can be studied. It consists of a thermal welding phase and a phase of mechanical separation of the welded assembly. For the mechanical phase, an adaptation of the T-peel test was used. These conditions make it possible to determine the thermal welding parameters (temperature, time) for optimal mechanical quality of the joint, according to a criterion established by optimization of the peel test used. The variations in minimum temperature required for an optimum weld, as a function of heating rate, can be simulated with a numerical model based on the concept of macromolecular interdiffusion. Consistent with the experimental behavior, the numerical model involves two parameters characteristic of the diffusion behavior of the polyethylene resin. Thus, these parameters characterize the weldability of the polyethylene resin under study.

Notizen: Multi-element (52Cr, 56Fe and 66Zn) implanted GaAs samples have been prepared specially for SIMS calibration. Absolute chemical measurements gave retained ion doses which agreed to within 12% of the nominal implanted dose (2.0 × 1014 atoms cm-2). Comparative SIMS depth profiles with five instruments gave Cr mode depth data which showed a variability of 5%. After data normalization to a common mode depth (168 nm) the shape of all profiles showed good agreement. SIMS anàlysis of similar samples containing lower dose implants (1.0 × 1013 atoms cm-2) showed that ∼50% of the Cr was contained in the near surface region (0-0.03 μm). This surface peak was not observed in profiles of samples which had been singly implanted with Cr. It is proposed that the Cr surface peak results from radiation enhanced out-diffusion initiated by the subsequent Fe implant. Whilst the high dose multi-implant samples showed a similar Cr surface accumulation, its magnitude in relation to the ion implanted dose, was smaller. These samples therefore form reliable calibration specimens for the simultaneous determination of the secondary ion responses of Cr, Fe and Zn in GaAs.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The supermolecular structures of polyethylene filaments prepared by crystallization from solution in extensional flow at different crystallization temperatures as well as of annealed and zone-drawn samples have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction methods. The lattice distortions in the crystallites of such samples are quantitatively determined for the first time. The results show that a direct correlation between the crystallite dimensions and the amount of lattice distortions on the one hand and the axial Young's modulus on the other hand can be excluded. Based on X-ray, mechanical and shrinkage investigations, some parameters of the structure of the non-crystalline regions are estimated. A structure model for the high-modulus polyethylene filaments is discussed.

Notizen: Oil was chosen as a new sampl type for total reflection XRF. A thin-film sample procedure is described which requires minimal sample preparation. This involves first bringing the oil into solution with a volatile solvent, then pipetting microliter amounts on to the reflector substrate followed by evaporation of the solvent. The linear dynamic range was found to extend to at least 5000 ppm. Detection limit measurements show that minute sample quantities are necessary for optimal detection limits of nanogram amounts. A maximum sample loading is required for the best detection limits in ppm. Using an Mo or Cu X-ray tube, limits were found to be a few ppm or sub-nanogram amounts. The spectrometer was calibrated by an internal standardization method and the results of determinations on sample solutions were typically within 10% relative accuracy.

Beschreibung: Ribonuclease mitochondrial RNA processing, a site-specific endoribonuclease involved in primer RNA metabolism in mammalian mitochondria, requires an RNA component for its activity. On the basis of copurification and selective inactivation with complementary oligonucleotides, a 135-nucleotide RNA species, not encoded in the mitochondrial genome, is identified as the RNA moiety of the endoribonuclease. This finding implies transport of a nucleus-encoded RNA, essential for organelle DNA replication, to the mitochondrial matrix.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chang, D D -- Clayton, D A -- GM-33088-16/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1987 Mar 6;235(4793):1178-84.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2434997" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notizen: The pyrolysis and gaseous combustion of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) incorporating poly(4-bromostyrene), poly(vinyl bromide), and poly(vinylidene bromide) has been studied using thermogravimetry, flammability limit evaluation, and hydrogen bromide (HBr) evolution techniques. The data obtained have been compared with limiting oxygen index (LOI) flammability data to elucidate flame retardation mechanisms. All the organo bromides studied (applied either via topical treatment or radiation grafting) released HBr on pyrolysis which is capable of inhibiting the gas phase combustion reactions. Condensed phase interactions were also detected which were capable of altering the gaseous pyrolysates. Thermal stability considerations suggest that, although the aliphatic bromides are excellent sources of HBr, they are not ideal flame retardants for PET.

Notizen: The kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition of poly(aryl-ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) in a nitrogen atmosphere have been obtained using an isothermal weight-loss method. Several mathematical approaches have been used to obtain the Arrhenius parameters based upon the use of different reaction models. The values obtained for the activation energy (E = 198.4 to 219.7 kJ/mol) and preexponential factor (log A = 11.1 to 12.3 min-1) fall within a narrow range, irrespective of the method of calculation. Although the kinetic data most closely fits an Avrami two-dimensional nucleating model, the data can be just as easily described by a first-order rate law.

Notizen: Log G* = f(X) isothermal variation curves were determined at various temperatures for two epoxy-aromatic amine systems widely used in industry. G* = G′ + jG″ is the viscoelastic modulus, determined by sinusoidal shearing at constant frequency between parallel plates; X represents the degree of reaction, determined by calorimetry. These curves clearly show the phenomena of gelation and glass transition. In the temperature range studied, the value of X at the gel point varies between 0.7 and 0.9 for the DGEBA-DDS system, and from 0.3 to 0.8 for the TGDDM-DDS system. These variations reflect a major modification of the reaction mechanism, particularly before the gel point.
