Notes: Summary Cells ofCandida shehatae repressed by growth in glucose- or D-xylose-medium produced a facilitated diffusion system that transported glucose (K s±2 mM,V max±2.3 mmoles g−1 h−1),d-xylose (K s±125 mM,V max±22.5 mmoles g−1 h−1) and D-mannose, but neither D-galactose norl-arabinose. Cells derepressed by starvation formed several sugar-proton symports. One proton symport accumulated 3-0-methylglucose about 400-fold and transported glucose (K s±0.12 mM,V max ± 3.2 mmoles g−1 h−1) andd-mannose, a second proton symport transportedd-xylose (K s± 1.0 mM,V max 1.4 mmoles g−1 h−1) andd-galactose, whilel-arabinose apparently used a third proton symport. The stoicheiometry was one proton for each molecule of glucose or D-xylose transported. Substrates of one sugar proton symport inhibited non-competitively the transport of substrates of the other symports. Starvation, while inducing the sugar-proton symports, silenced the facilitated diffusion system with respect to glucose transport but not with respect to the transport of D-xylose, facilitated diffusion functioning simultaneously with thed-xylose-proton symport.

Notes: Summary Two extra bisatellited chromosome identified as inv dup (15) (pter→q11.2::q11.2→pter) were found in an oligoasthenospermic male. Analysis of Ag-staining in the proband and in one fertile brother with a normal karyotype revealed that nucleolar organizer region (NOR) activity was significantly increased in the patient. The frequency of satellite associations was also significantly higher in the index case, but no correlation was found between NOR activity and acrocentric associations. These results suggest that extra NOR activity and the elevated frequency of satellite associations could predispose to gametogenic impairment.

Notes: Summary Chromosome studies were carried out in four members of a sibship with a 15p+chromosome. Two carriers had normal offspring, one was unmarried, and the index case had three abortions and no live children. By means of different banding techniques, up to four satellites and four stalks could be observed on the abnormal chromosome. The Ag-I method showed from zero to four silver precipitates on the 15p+marker. Mean Ag-staining for 15p+and the ten acrocentric chromosomes were obtained in the carriers. Statistically significant differences between sibs were found. These results suggest the existence of: (a) An interindividual and intercellular variation of nucleolus organizer region (NOR) activity in man. (b) An optimal threshold of NOR activity, so that disturbances at the meiotic level could occur when it is exceeded. Our conclusions lead us to advise analysis of NOR activity in individuals with extra nucleolus organizer regions.

Notes: Summary Recombinants encoding members of the trypsin/α-amylase inhibitors family (also designated CM-proteins) were selected from a cDNA library prepared from developing barley endosperm. Inserts in two of the clones, pUP-13 and pUP-38, were sequenced and found to encode proteins which clearly belong to this family, as judged from the extensive homology of the deduced sequences with that of the barley trypsin inhibitor CMe, the only member of the group for which a complete amino acid sequence has been obtained by direct protein sequencing. These results, together with previously obtained N-terminal sequences of purified CM-proteins, imply that there are at least six different members of this dispersed gene family in barley. The relationship of this protein family to the B-3 hordein and to reserve prolamins from related species is discussed in terms of their genome structure and evolution.

Notes: Summary Internodal cells ofChara, grown in culture either at pH 5.7, 6.5 or 7.5, were studied to determine their chloride influx capability, the quantitative aspects of charasome morphology and the degree to which these two parameters could be correlated. In cells grown at pH 5.7 the charasomes were relatively small, were widely spaced on the plasma membrane, and contributed only a 0.6% increase to the surface area of the plasma membrane in the acid region of the cell. In contrast, the charasome membrane surface area of cells grown at pH 7.5 had increased × 19, the density of charasomes on the cell surface increased × 42, thus producing a × 3.57 increase in the acid region plasma membrane surface area. Chloride influx in cells grown at pH 7.5 was × 8.7–12.7 greater than in cells grown at pH 5.7. Cells that had been starved of chloride exhibited a × 2.4 average increase in the rate of chloride influx. Our observations establish the existence of a positive correlation between the rate of chloride influx and the increase in membrane surface area due to charasomes, although other factors, such as the effect of pH on transport-related enzymes, and the effect of charasome structure on chemical equilibria, may also be of importance.

Notes: Abstract A simple formula based on leading particle models of nucleon-nucleon collisions is used to evaluate the average momentum transfer in central heavy ion collisions at energies from 20 to 150 MeV/u. This formula, which reproduces a number of the features of the observed systematics, offers a straightforward explanation for the approximate universality of fractional linear momentum transfer as a function of velocity, the dependence of fractional momentum transfer on target mass and the greater fractional momentum transfer of the proton as compared to heavy ion projectiles.

Notes: Abstract The statistical mechanical equations for the thermophysical properties of dilute gases are evaluated using sophisticated, but still practical potential models with no more than three adjustable parameters. Universal combination rules for these parameters are formulated. It is shown that some data of dilute gas thermophysical properties of monatomic and simple linear molecules yield potential parameters that can be used to predict all other thermophysical properties of the pure gases and their mixtures with excellent accuracy. For monatomic fluids, these potentials are shown to give excellent results of the thermodynamic functions also in the liquid and dense gaseous state.
