    Description: In an effort to isolate the essential physics of the mesosphere and the thermosphere, a steady one-dimensional density and pressure model has been developed in support of related NASA activities, i.e., projects such as the AOTV and the Space Station. The model incorporates a zeroth order basic state including both the three-dimensional wind field and its associated shear structure, etc. A first order wave field is also incorporated in period bands ranging from about one second to one day. Both basic state and perturbation quantities satsify the combined constraints of mass, linear momentum and energy conservation on the midlatitude beta plane. A numerical (iterative) technique is used to solve for the vertical wind which is coupled to the density and pressure fields. The temperature structure from 1 to 1000 km and the lower boundary conditions are specified using the U.S. Standard Atmosphere 1976. Vertical winds are initialized at the top of the Planetary Boundary Layer using Ekman pumping values over flat terrain. The model also allows for the generation of waves during the geostrophic adjustment process and incorporates wave nonlinearity effects.

    Description: The TP-LIF OH sensor is based on the principle that a molecule having multiple energy states, all of which are bonding, can be pumped into the highest state with the resulting fluorescence being blue-shifted relative to all pumping wavelengths. In this way, one can successfully discriminate against virtually all noise sources in the system using long wavelength blocking filters in conjunction with solar-blind photomultiplier tubes. Thus, these systems tend to be signal limited rather than signal-to-noise limited as is true of the SP-LIF technique as well as other conventional analytical methods. The trick to achieving the above sampling scheme, with high efficiency, is in the use of high photon fluxes of short time duration. Obviously, the latter type of light source is fulfilled nicely by available pulsed lasers. From an operational point of view, however, this laser source needs to be tunable. The latter characteristic permits extremely high selectivity for the detection of a diatomic or simple polyatomic molecule by taking advantage of the high-resolution spectroscopic features of these type species.

    Description: The underlying mechanisms of Archean tectonics and the degree to which modern plate tectonic models are applicable early in Earth's history continue to be a subject of considerable debate. A precise knowledge of the timing of geological events is of the utmost importance in studying this problem. The high precision U-Pb method has been applied in recent years to rock units in many areas of the Superior Province. Most of these data have precisions of about + or - 2-3 Ma. The resulting detailed chronologies of local igneous development and the regional age relationships furnish tight constraints on any Archean tectonic model. Superior province terrains can be classified into 3 types: (1) low grade areas dominated by meta-volcanic rocks (greenstone belts); (2) high grade, largely metaplutonic areas with abundant orthogneiss and foliated to massive I-type granitoid bodies; and (3) high grade areas with abundant metasediments, paragneiss and S-type plutons. Most of the U-Pb age determinations have been done on type 1 terrains with very few having been done in type 3 terrains. A compilation of over 120 ages indicates that the major part of igneous activity took place in the period 2760-2670 Ma, known as the Kenoran event. This event was ubiquitous throughout the Superior Province.

    Description: The Wabigoon Subprovince, interposed between the predominantly metasedimentary-plutonic and gneissic English River and Quetico Subprovinces to the north and south respectively, exposed Archean greenstone and granitoid rocks for a strike length of greater than 700 km. Based on predominating rock types, the western part of the subprovince is divided into two terrains: the northern Wabigoon volcano-sedimentary and pluonic terrain (NWW) and the Wabigoon Diapiric Axis terrain (WDA). Both the NWW and WDA are described according to volcanic sequence, geological faults, chemical composition and evolutionary history.

    Description: The paper reveals the possibility that the moon could have formed from the long-term evolution of a circumterrestrial disk emplaced during the earth's final stages of formation. A model is presented which emphasizes silicate enrichment (or iron depletion) of lunar material within the disk. This model depends on the late-stage planetesimal population being dominated by small bodies.

    Description: A data base of about 25,000 numerically integrated trajectories of earth-encountering planetesimals is used to study the angular momentum problem of forming the moon out of material captured into a circumterrestrial disk from heliocentric orbits. Mass-orbital element distributions of incoming planetesimals are combined with this data base to calculate, as a function of distance from earth, the net geocentric specific angular momentum of disk-encountering material on heliocentric orbits. Results suggest that a permanent disk population is not possible.

    Description: In a reanalysis of the Vector Helium Magnetometer data taken by Pioneer 11 during its Saturn encounter in 1979, using improvements in the data set and in the procedures, studies are made of a variety of models. The best is the P(11)84 model, an axisymmetric spherical harmonic model of Saturn's magnetic field within 8 Saturn radii of the planet. The appropriately weighted root mean square average of the difference between the observed and the modeled field is 1.13 percent. For the Voyager-based Z3 model of Connerney, Acuna, and Ness, this average difference from the Pioneer 11 data is 1.81 percent. The external source currents in the magnetopause, tail, bow shock, and perhaps ring currents vary with time and can only be crudely modeled. An algebraic formula is derived for calculating the L shells on which energetic charged particles drift in axisymmetric fields.

    Description: A critical comment is made on the proposal by Frank et al. (1986) that a flux of small comets constantly impacts the earth's atmosphere. The seismic amplitudes generated in the moon by such comets impacting that body are calculated, and it is concluded that the proposed flux of comets is 100,000 times greater than would be supported by either the seismic impact rate of the moon or the amplitude of its steady state reverberation. Frank et al. reply that this discrepancy may be traced to the insensitivity of the lunar seismic stations for the detection of the impacts of tenuous, weakly bound comets relative to those of dense, stony meteoroids.

    Description: The process of collisional catastrophic disruption has played a significantly role in structuring the solar system. Diverse populations of bodies such as the asteroid belt, small satellites of Jupiter and Saturn and perhaps even the rings of Saturn have been created or substantially changed by catastrophic distruption. Understanding the outcome of large scale impacts is essential to learning about the early history of the solar system in the asteroid zone and the reason why a planet failed to form there.
