    Notes: The existence of the continuum, quantum field theory found by Baker and Johnson [G. A. Baker, Jr. and J. D. Johnson, J. Phys. A 18, L261 (1985)] to be nontrivial is proved rigorously. It is proved to satisfy all usual requirements of such a field theory, except rotational invariance. Currently known information is consistent with rotational invariance however. Most of the usual properties of other known Euclidean boson quantum field theories hold here, in a somewhat weakened form. Summability of the sufficiently strongly ultraviolet cutoff bare coupling constant perturbation series is proved as well as a nonzero radius of convergence for high-temperature expansions of the corresponding continuous-spin Ising model. The description of the theory by these two series methods is shown to be equivalent. The field theory is probably not asymptotically free.

    Notes: A comparison was made of stocking rates of 4·7, 5·6 and 6·4 cows ha-1 during the first 7 weeks (period 1) of the grazing season. Each group of British Friesian cows was continuously stocked on a day and a night field. In the subsequent periods 2 and 3 (each lasting 7 weeks) the three groups were maintained at the same stocking rate within periods (4·2 and 31 cows ha-1, respectively). The differential stocking rates were achieved by the addition and removal of cows.The stocking rates applied in period I had no significant effects on milk yield, milk composition, liveweight change or condition score, in any period. Milk production ha-1 over the three periods totalled 12390,13 978 and 14986 kg, and the estimated utilized metabolizable energy totalled 773, 81·5 and 86·6 GJ ha-1 for low, medium and high stocking rates, respectively.Increased stocking rate in period I was associated with a decrease in sward height in periods 1 and 2. This led to an increase in herbage metabolizable energy, and crude protein contents, and to an increase in tiller population density. The lowest stocking rate gave greater live individual tiller weights throughout the experiment and a longer interval between defoliation of individual tillers in period 1.The results indicate that high stocking rates in the spring are not necessarily detrimental to overall summer performance of spring calving dairy cows. However, high stocking rates in the early season ensure a high level of herbage utilization and milk output ha-1 in that period. Although this practice leads to a reduced sward height in mid season, the sward has less rejected area, a higher tiller population density and a higher digestibility than swards stocked at a lower level.

    Notes: A three-dimensional formalism has been developed that can be used to compute the anhysteretic magnetization of anisotropic materials. The formalism represents a statistically based mean-field model in which the material is characterized as an ensemble of pseudodomains. The magnetization of the ensemble is obtained using a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution with an energy dependence that includes both interactive and anisotropic terms. The model is applied to a single crystal of cobalt and excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained.

    Notes: A closed-loop computer-interfaced electrohydraulic fatigue apparatus was constructed and installed in an ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) scanning Auger microprobe for the study of environmental effects on fatigue. Load- or (total or plastic) strain-controlled fatigue tests can be performed in the push–pull mode between atmospheric pressure and UHV (below 6.5×10−8 Pa) under controlled gaseous environments. The specimen mounting allows access of an electron beam for Auger analysis, an ion gun for sputtering and a secondary-electron detector for imaging. There have been several important improvements made in the electronics.

    Notes: A numerical model for a lightning channel that includes a multigroup treatment of radiative transport was used to calculate the optical output corresponding to an assumed current waveform. The calculation compares well with the experimental data that are available. The time development of the temperature, pressure, density, and electrical conductivity profiles across the channel were investigated, as was the energy balance for the process.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of a range of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, non-cyclic electron transport and the capacity of the thylakoids to bind Atrazine were examined during photoinhibition treatment of intact pea chloroplasts. Parameters of fluorescence induction of chloroplasts in the presence and absence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea at 20 °C and at 77 K were determined. The contributions of photochemical and non-photochemical quenching processes to the loss of fluorescence during photoinhibitory treatment were assessed. Two distinct phases of photoinhibitory damage were observed. During the initial 5 min period of exposure to light the minimal fluorescence level (Fo) increased, whilst the maximal fluorescence level (FP) decreased, both coupled and uncoupled non-cyclic electron transport to methyl viologen decreased and the ability to bind Atrazine to the thylakoids decreased. Fluorescence analyses demonstrated that during this period thylakoids were becoming increasingly less efficient at generating and maintaining a transmembrane proton electrochemical gradient. Photoinhibitory damage that occurred at later times between 5 and 20 min was of a very different nature. Both Fo and FP declined, a loss of coupled and uncoupled non-cyclic electron transport was observed together with a loss of the capacity to photo-oxidize water. However, no further loss of Atrazine-binding was associated with such changes. A consistent decrease in the quantum yield of non-cyclic electron transport was also observed throughout photoinhibition treatment. The possibility of two distinct mechanisms of photoinhibitory damage to the photosynthetic apparatus is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Photosynthetic electron transport activities and the ability to generate and maintain a trans-thylakoid proton electrochemical gradient were examined during chloroplast development in 4-day-old wheat leaves grown under a diurnal light regime. Polarographic and spectropholometric studies on leaf tissue demonstrated that poorly developed chloroplasls at the leaf base could photo-oxidize water and transfer electrons from photosystem 2 to photosystem 1. The capacity for non-cyclic whole-chain electron transport increased during chloroplast development. Thylakoids isolated from the leaf base, although capable of pumping protons into the inlrathylakoid space, could not maintain a trans-membrane proton electrochemical gradient; this ability developed at later stages of chloroplast biogenesis in the leaf. The implications of these results for the energetics of the developing leaf are discussed.

    Notes: The effect of temperature on the spring growth of perennial ryegrass swards was studied at three contrasting sites. Two of these were situated on land restored after opencast coal mining, one of which had been drained. The third was on undisturbed land of the same soil type. Rates of leaf extension were measured in an attempt to give an early indication of differences in plant growth in the spring of 1982.Spring growth started earliest on undisturbed land. On the restored land drainage proved beneficial, for although the onset of growth was delayed compared to the undisturbed site the subsequent rates of growth were similar. Both the onset and the rate of growth were slower on the undrained site. Highly significant relationships existed between leaf extension rate and soil temperature at each site. However, when sites were compared, differences in soil temperature could only partly explain observed differences in growth rate between sites.It was concluded that some factor other than soil temperature was responsible for the difference in spring growth between the undisturbed site and the undrained opencast site in this experiment.

    Notes: : A large number of agricultural drainage wells (ADWs) are located in north-central Iowa. These wells permit sediments, pesticides, nitrate, and bacteria in surface and subsurface drainage water to enter regional aquifers that are currently being used for drinking-water supplies, mostly by rural families and communities. This paper reports some possible alternatives to control the entry of surface and subsurface drainage waters into groundwater systems, and describes a methodology to make comprehensive economic feasibility studies of alternative drainage outlets. The estimated cost of providing main subsurface drains varied from $220 to $960 per hectare. If the use of ADWs was completely eliminated without providing alternative drainage, it is estimated that the average annual loss to the farmers of the area would be at least $270 per hectare in reduced crop yields. Of course, losses would be weather dependent and highly variable. Management practices to reduce the pollutant load in water draining to ADWs are also discussed.
