Notes: A detailed comparison of two-dimensional near-infrared absorption maps and x-ray topographs of commercial semi-insulating (100) GaAs wafers grown by the liquid-encapsulated Czochralski technique is reported. The absorption measurements with a spatial resolution up to 100×100 μm2 were performed using a highly sensitive silicon diode array as the detector element. Fluctuations of the EL2 concentration up to 60% are found in conventional undoped wafers. In preannealed wafers, these fluctuations are reduced by a factor of 2, approximately. The spatial one-to-one correlation of the EL2 distribution with grown-in dislocation networks, which is observed in both cases, is discussed. In indium-doped wafers of low dislocation density, the homogeneity of EL2 is better than 5% in the central area of about 40 mm in diameter. By investigating the EL2 distribution near peripheral slip lines, it is definitely established that gettering is a relevant process leading to nonuniformities.

Notes: Particle beams generated in a Kaufman-type ion gun from CC12F2, CCl4, and BCl3 have been characterized with a mass spectrometer. The composition of ionic and neutral species emanating from the gun varies strongly with the gun operating conditions. For all three gases major components are Cl+2 and Cl+ among the ions, and Cl2 among the neutrals. Various other ions and neutral fragments of the form CClx Fy, CClx, and BClx are also observed. Changes in the gas composition versus the magnetic field in the gun and versus gas pressure are related to corresponding measurements of the etch yield of aluminum. These results, together with data on the etch yield versus ion energy and incident angle, suggest that the overall etching includes contributions from physical sputtering, direct reactive ion etching, and, especially with CCl4 and to some extent with BCl3, from chemical sputtering. The implications of the beam diagnostics for other experiments, etching such materials as III-V compounds, silicon, and silicides are also discussed.

Notes: This paper describes a software package that will ultimately be made available to the entire magnetic fusion energy community and which may be used to analyze and interpret linear and nonlinear fluctuation data generated by a wide variety of plasma diagnostics such as, for example, probes, scattering systems, and beams. The software tool is divided into two basic parts: mathematical/statistical programs and applications programs. The mathematical/statistical programs will be further subdivided into those suitable for stationary and nonstationary data. The stationary data package will include bispectral analysis, a very powerful tool in the analysis of nonlinear data. Application programs will include fluctuation-induced particle transport, two-point estimates of S(k, ω), three-wave coupling coefficients and energy cascading, and nonlinear digital filters. Both the prototype plasma-fluctuation diagnostic software tool and plans for the complete software package will be described. This work was supported by the U.S. DOE Contract No. DE-AC05-85ER80251.

Notes: A 6.5-m normal incidence monochromator installed at the storage ring BESSY, which is optimized for a high throughput of circularly polarized off-plane radiation at moderate resolution is described. The monochromator employs two exit slits and is specially designed and used for low-signal experiments such as spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on solids, adsorbates, free atoms, and molecules. The Monk–Gillieson mounting (plane grating in a convergent light beam) allows for large apertures with relatively little astigmatism. With two gratings, a flux of more than 1011 photons s−1 bandwidth−1 (0.2–0.5 nm) with a circular polarization of more than 90% in the wavelength range from 35 to 675 nm is achieved.

Notes: A novel experimental method to measure both the velocity distribution and the relativistic factor γ of intense guided electron beams is described. The method is based on the use of a magnetic hill to discriminate the electrons with different transverse velocity components. Analysis of the current reflected by the hill as a function of the height of the hill yields the above mentioned beam characteristics.

Notes: We have developed a small scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to be incorporated into a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Vibration isolation and damping is achieved solely with Viton dampers. As a stand-alone unit, a tunnel-gap stability of about 1 A(ring) is reached at atmospheric air pressure without additional sound protection. Stability improves by at least an order of magnitude when incorporated into a SEM.

Notes: A new homodyne spectroscopy technique [T. Tsukishima and O. Asada, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 17, 2059 (1978)] has been applied to tokamak microturbulence measurements in order to resolve the frequency spectra and wave propagation direction of low-frequency density fluctuations. Application of this method provides a high-resolution, inexpensive, and easily implemented alternative to the more technically demanding heterodyne detection schemes typically available. Comparison of heterodyne and the new homodyne spectroscopy results will be made.

Notes: Light emission from the impact of Al+(1S,3P) ions on H2 molecules at 5.2 to 13.8 eVCM was spectrally analyzed. It was found to consist of two band systems. Of the known A 2Π–X 2Σ+ transition, numerous new bands were observed, allowing a first experimental determination of vibrational constants. In addition, a predicted B 2Σ+–X 2Σ+ system was observed for the first time. Relative emission cross sections for the two systems and for the 1S and 3P reactant species were measured. They parallel closely the trends in the isovalent system B++H2. One important difference is, however, the existence of a large (∼3.5 eV) activation barrier in the dominant Al++H2 reaction channel. This is explained in terms of adiabatic potential hypersurfaces.

Notes: A one-dimensional system of N hard rods with arbitary diameters and masses is considered. For this system the pair distribution function is calculated exactly. The result is independent of the masses but depends on the specific sequence of diameters that is considered. The pair distribution function is then specialized to a mixture of Nd particles with diameter d and ND particles with diameter D, respectively, and averaged over all possible arrangements of the particles. From this the structure factor S(κ) for finite N and it's thermodynamic limit are obtained. It is shown how in this limit a finite peak tends to the singular contribution δ(κ). Finally, the limit S(κ→0) is calculated and compared with a formula following from general considerations for three-dimensional systems.

Notes: Chemiluminescent collisions of P+ ions in a beam with H2 and D2 molecules have been observed in the energy range of 2.3 to 12.2 eVCM. A spectral analysis at the peak of the cross section, 6.4 eVCM, by means of computer-generated spectra showed the PH+ and PD+ A 2Δ–X 2Π systems, which included some previously unobserved bands. The well-known A-state predissociation was confirmed, but appears to be incomplete above its onset at N=13 for PH+(A, v=0) and N=17 for PD+(A, v=0). The formation of PH+(A) has an activation barrier of 1–1.5 eV above the thermochemical threshold, which is analogous to the Al++H2 case and may be typical of second-row ion reactions.
