Notes: Summary The low molecular weight heat shock protein (HSP) profiles of the hexaploid wheat cultivar “Chinese Spring” and its ditelosomic series were characterized by isoelectric focusing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of denatured in vivo radiolabeled proteins. Comparisons of the ditelosomics (DTs) to the euploid “Chinese Spring” enabled the assignment of genes controlling 9 of the 13 targeted HSPs to seven chromosome arms. There did not appear to be a genome-specific action in the regulation of expression of these HSPs. There did appear to be a higher frequency of controlling genes within homoeologous DT lines 3, 4 and 7. Significant variation in protein quantity was evident among the DT lines for some HSPs, while other HSPs were remarkably stable in their expression across all DTs examined. The results are useful in identifying specific DT lines for the investigation of HSP functions in hexaploid wheat.

Notes: The tendency of carbon fiber to nucleate the zation of poly(etherettterlcetone) (PEEK) has been evaluated by DSC and other techniques. As the carbon fiber content was increased, the supercooling necessary for PEEK crystallization decreased. The repeated melting (at 396°C) of the same PEEK sample results in a decrease of the number of nuclei for crystallization. At equivalent thermal histories, PEEK with carbon fiber was found to have a higher nucleation density than PEEK itself. The surface of carbon fibers and nuclei in the PEEK matrix compete for crystallization growth. As the holding time in melt was increased, the number of matrix spherulites formed on cooling decreased, hence a more pronounced transcrystalline region was developed. Correspondingly, the composites preheated in the melt for 100 min showed about two times the transverse tensile strength and strain-to-failure of those preheated for only 30 min. Corresponding fracture surface produced in tension showed that the former samples had a greater matrix adhesion to the carbon fiber than the latter.A strong interfacial bond is thus developed by crystallization on carbon fiber surface. Destroying nuclei in the PEEK matrix by long preheating enhances crystallization on the carbon fiber.

Notes: Polycarbonate is known to crystallize thermally, but only slowly and to a limited (25%) extent. The melting points reported exhibit a wide variation. We have found that the melting temperature of polycarbonate may be drastically increased by employing a sequence of vapor-induced crystallization and annealing treatments. The crystals formed by the treatment with organic vapor act as a nucleation or precursor state for further crystallization into larger, more perfect lamellae. An initial peak melting temperature of 195°C has been annealed up to 239°C, and then to 295°C by a double-heat treatment. This sample is 60% crystalline, based on heat-of-fusion calculations. An equilibrium melting point of 335°C has been obtained for PC from an extrapolation of reciprocal lamellar thickness.

Notes: Solid-state coextrusion has been used to prepare uniaxially drawn films from isotropic poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) of a minimum degree of crystallinity (ca. 5%) both below and above its glass transition temperature Tg. The onset of cold crystallization (Tc) of the drawn films has been studied as a function of the extrusion temperature (ET) and the draw ratio (EDR). It has been shown that Tc decreases markedly on draw, as much as 95°C, and, at constant draw ratio Tc goes through a minimum in the Tg region. For undrawn PEN, annealing below 153°C has no significant effect on Tc. To evaluate the crystallization rate constant (k) and the activation energy (Ea) of the drawn specimens, a nonisothermal DSC procedure has been used. With increasing EDR, k increases markedly and Ea goes down over threefold compared with the undrawn polymer. At high ET, strain-induced crystallization has also been shown to play an important role in lowering Ea for cold crystallization. Thermal shrinkage above Tm indicates a high elastic recovery, underlining the efficiency of deformation, ca. 93%, achieved by solid-state coextrusion.

Notes: Thermal and mechanical studies on many linear polyesters have revealed their behavior in crystalline, liquid crystalline, and amorphous phases. Their phase behavior in binary compositions has also been studied by a range of additional techniques and in combinations including the polycarbonate of bisphenol-A. Regions of amorphous compatibility and incompatibility have been identified and measures made of transition temperature changes with composition. The conditions for transreaction have also been determined and the properties measured for the resultant new copolymers.
