Notes: Abstract Let P be a partially ordered set. Define k = k (P) = max p∈ |{x ∈ P : p 〈 x or p = x}|, i.e., every element is comparable with at most k others. Here it is proven that there exists a constant c (c 〈 50) such that dim P 〈 ck(log k)2. This improves an earlier result of Rödl and Trotter (dim P ≤2 k 2+2). Our proof is nonconstructive, depending in part on Lovász' local lemma.

Notes: Abstract The individual contributions of the first two external domains of the HLA-B7 heavy chain to the expression of allele-specific (B7) and locus-specific (B and C) antigenic determinants were investigated using hybrid class I genes. Hybrid genes were constructed in vitro by exon shuffling between the parent genes HLA-B7, HLA-Cw3, HLA-A3, and H-2K d, and their expression was monitored following transfection into mouse L cells. The results show that most allele-specific antigenic determinants are associated with the first external domain of the 137 heavy chain, whereas all the locus-specific antigenic determinants tested map to the second external domain.

Notes: Abstract We consider a two-person constant sum perfect information game, which we call theEnd Play Game, which arises from an abstraction of simple end play positions in card games of the whist family, including bridge. This game was described in 1929 by Emanuel Lasker, the mathematician and world chess champion, who called itwhistette. The game uses a deck of cards that consists of a single totally ordered suit of 2n cards. To begin play the deck is divided into two handsA andB ofn cards each, held by players Left and Right, and one player is designated as having thelead. The player on lead chooses one of his cards, and the other player after seeing this card selects one of his own to play. The player with the higher card wins a “trick” and obtains the lead. The cards in the trick are removed from each hand, and play then continues until all cards are exhausted. Each player strives to maximize his trick total, and thevalue of the game to each player is the number of tricks he takes. Despite its simple appearance, this game is quite complicated, and finding an optimal strategy seems difficult. This paper derives basic properties of the game, gives some criteria under which one hand is guaranteed to be better than another, and determines the optimal strategies and value functions for the game in several special cases.

Notes: Abstract A graphH isd-degenerate if every subgraph of it contains a vertex of degree smaller thand. For a graphG, letα d (G) denote the maximum number of vertices of an inducedd-degenerate subgraph ofG. Sharp lowers bounds forα d (G) in terms of the degree sequence ofG are obtained, and the minimum number of edges of a graphG withn vertices andα 2 (G) ≤ m is determined precisely for allm ≤ n.

Notes: Abstract Animal protein in broiler rations was replaced with Barseem Protein Concentrate (BPC). The standard group having blood, meat and fish meal as sources of animal protein showed an average weight gain of 1655 g. Replacement of blood meal with BPC resulted in a slight decrease in the average weight gain (1541 g) of broilers. Average weight gain of broilers increased to 1775 g and 1671 g when fish or meat meal was replaced with BPC in rations. Complete replacement of animal protein with BPC adversely affected growth and average weight gain decreased to 1443 g. Supplementation with lysine or methionine when animal protein was replaced with BPC did not improve growth of the broilers.

Notes: It has been recognized for many years that α-thrombin, like other better known mitogens (eg, PDGF, EOF, etc) is capable of initiating proliferation in quiescent cells belonging to the fibroblast family. However, unlike these other peptides, thrombin is a serine protease whose function as a growth stimulator for fibroblasts is intimately linked to its estefolytic activity. Thus, while native α-thrombin is capable of evoking DNA synthesis in GoG1-arrested cells, neither enzymatically inactive thrombin (eg, iPR2P-α-thrombin) nor partially degraded thrombin (eg, γ-thrombin) shares in this capability. Data from our laboratory have shown that thrombin is chemotactic for peripheral blood monocytes and for cells belonging to the monocyte/macrophage family and that this activity is not dependent upon thrombin's enzymatic properties. Our recent findings demonstrate that thrombin also serves as a growth factor for these cells, and this mitogenic capability is independent of esterolytic function and resides in the same region of the molecule as that responsible for chemotaxis. Additionally, by means of techniques such as computer modeling and peptide synthesis, we have now been able to delineate a distinct mitogenic subsite within this chemotactic thrombin sequence. Thus, the sequence in the thrombin B chain that mediates chemotaxis represents a true cell interactive exosite additionally capable of stimulating growth and possibly other biological functions in cells of macrophage/monocyte lineage.
