Notes: By wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering binary films prepared from non-aqueous solutions of the blends of cellulose with poly(acrylonitrile), poly(vinyl acetate), and poly(vinyl alcohol) are shown to be two-phase microheterogeneous systems. The structural and morphological features are determined by the difference in chemical nature of the mixed polymer components and their ratio.

Notes: A general approach to the preparation of star-like carbon chain polymeric conjugates with proteins has been suggested. The influence of the modification on the spatial structure, biological activity, immunoreactivity and enzyme degradation of the protein (insulin) is discussed.

Notes: To simulate production-scale conditions of gluconic acid fermentation by Gluconobacter oxydans, different experimental setups are presented in this study. From the determination of the time constants of a production-scale reactor, it can be concluded that mixing and oxygen transfer are the rate-limiting mechanisms. This results in oxygen concentration gradients which were simulated in a one-compartment reactor in which the oxygen concentration was fluctuated by a fluctuated gassing with air and nitrogen. It could be concluded that only very long periods of absence of oxygen (ca. 180 s) results in lower specific oxygen uptake rates by Gluconobacter oxydans. From scale-down studies carried out in a two-compartment system to simulate a production-scale reactor more accurately, it could be concluded that not only the residence time in the aerated part of the system is important, but the liquid flow in between the different parts of the reactor is also an essential parameter. It could also be concluded that the microorganisms are not influenced negatively by the fluctuated oxygen concentrations with respect to their maximal oxidation capacity. The two-compartment system can also be used for optimization experiments in which the “aerated” compartment was gassed with pure oxygen. From these experiments it was concluded that also a short residence of the cells at high oxygen concentrations diminished the growth and product formation rates. These experiments show the necessity of the scale-down experiments if optimization is carried out. The two-compartment system presented in this study is a very attractive tool for reliable scale-down experiments.

Notes: Fast atom bombardment (FAB) ionization and two coupled analyzers (BE-EB) have been combined with neutral gas collision (C) to enhance structual information in the mass spectra of oligosaccharides. (B and E are abbreviations for magnetic and electric sectors respectively.) FAB ionization and the first analysers (BE) have provided parent ions free from biological and liquid matrix contaminants. Structural detail of these products were observed after collision and daughter ion analysis in a second coupled analyser (EB). Starting from complex mixtures, this instrumental approach, BE-C-EB, has provided specific oligomeric sequence information which was not observed in the normal FAB mass spectra. Collision spectra obtained from isomeric linear and branched oligosaccharides show unique fragments that can be directly related to structure.

Notes: Flame retardation of polypropylene was accomplished by blending with antimony compounds (Sb2O3 and SbPO4) in conjunction with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or ferric oxide. The compatibility and dispersion of antimony compounds in the polymer matrix was enhanced by using silane coupling agents, viz., vinyltriethoxysilane (A-151) and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (A-1100). Rheological properties of filled polypropylene were studied in the temperature range 180 to 220°C at shear rates of 29.5 to 119.5 sec-1. An increase in the melt viscosity was found in the filled polypropylene as compared to virgin polymer. Silanation of antimony compounds also influenced the melt rheology of flame retardant polypropylene. Incorporation of 6 phr Sb2O3 and 19 phr PVC raised the oxygen index of polypropylene to 22.9 and this sample was found to be self extinguishing in 65 s with a burning rate of 0.06 mm/s as compared to 1.1 mm/s for unfilled polypropylene. Though silanation of antimony compounds slightly reduced the oxygen index of flame retardant polypropylene, yield strain and flexural rigidity of injection molded samples was improved over unsilanated flame retardant polymer.

Notes: Unsaturated Polyester resins were prepared by the reaction of cinnamylsuccinic acid with saturated diols, namely, ethylene, diethylene, propylene, dipropylene, tetramethylene, and hexamethylene glycols, and the unsaturated diols, namely, 1,4-butene- and 1,4-butynediols. All the polyester resins obtained have been characterized and were found to cure with styrene, with relatively low conversions. The properties of the cured polyesters in the form of films were determined. IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy were used for both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the polyesters and their hydrolyzate products, after curing with styrene.

Notes: The results of a study of oriented blends prepared by the method of successive synthesis of polypropylene and polyethylene with ZIEGLER-NATTA catalysts are presented. It is shown that the strong interaction of polypropylene and polyethylene allows to orient and maintain the oriented state of the polyethylene melt under static conditions for a long period of time. The partially oriented polyethylene melt is in liquid-crystalline state and crystallizes with extended chains.
