Notes: Summary The action of GRF on GH3 cell membrane was examined by patch electrode techniques. Under current clamp with patch elecrtrode, spontaneous action potentials were partially to totally eliminated by application of GRF. In the case of partial elimination, the duration of remaining spontaneous action potentials was prolonged and the amplitude of afterhyperpolarization was decreased. The evoked actiion potential in the cells which did not show spontaneous action potentials was also eliminated by GRF. In order to examine what channels were affected by GRF, voltage-clamp analysis was performed. It was revealed that voltage-gated Ca2+ channel current and Ca2+-induced K+ channels current were decreased by GRF, while voltage-gated Na+ channel and delayed K+ channel current was considered to be a consequence of he decrease of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels current. Therefore it is likely that the effect of GRF on GH3 cells was due to the block of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels. The elimination of action potential under current clamp corresponded to the block of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels and the prolongation of action potential could be explained by the decrease of Ca2+-induced K+ channel current. The amplitude decrease of afterhyperpolarization could also be explained by the reduction of Ca2+-induced K+ channel current. Thus the results under current clamp well coincide with the results under voltage clamp. Hormone secretion from GH3 cells was not stimulated by GRF. However, the finding that GRF solely blocked voltage-gated Ca2+ channel suggested the specific action of GRF on GH3 cell membranes.

Notes: Dialkyldiallylammonium salts 1a-c were prepared by quaternization of diallylamine with alkyl bromides and their polymerizability as oriented molecular assemblies in aqueous solution is discussed. Thin films of those ammonium salts on the glass wall were incubated by adding a phosphate buffer solution to yield giant spherical vesicles with diameters ranging from 10 to 100 μm. When large amounts of the ammonium salt were applied, it was necessary to add more than 5 mol-% of cholesterol in order to stabilize the resulting giant vesicles. By ultrasonication of the film-aqueous solution system, much smaller vesicles with diameters ranging from 0,03 to 0,2 μm were obtained. The stabilizing effect of cholesterol addition to the system of the small vesicles is similar to that observed for the giant vesicles. Under an inert atmosphere, the vesicles in aqueous solution were polymerized by ultraviolet irradiation. From the results of TEM and NMR spectroscopy, it was concluded that the molecules were polymerized in the vesicles without changing the profile of molecular assembly during an irradiation of 6 h. However, when the ammonium salts were dissolved homogeneously in degassed benzene, the ultraviolet irradiation polymerization did not proceed beyond a conversion of 5% under the same conditions.

Notes: Studies have been conducted in a gas circulation type fermentor in order to characterize the ethanol fermentation of uncooked cassava starch with Rhizopus koji. Results showed that ethanol concentration reached 13-14% (v/v) in 4-day broth, and the maximum productivity of ethanol was 2.3 g ethanol/L broth h. This productivity was about 50% compared to the productivity of a glucose-yeast system. Ethanol yield reached 83.5-72.3% of the theoretical yield for the cassava starch used. The fermentor used in the present work has been proven by experiment to be suitable for ethanol fermentation of the broth with solid substrate.

Notes: With the aid of nonuniform DC electric fields, an improved bubble disruption and dispersion technique has been developed for dielectric fluid bubble column reactors. The basic mechanisms which lead to bubble disruption and dispersion in the system have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The influence of operating variables, liquid properties and electrode geometry on the present applied electric field method has been conducted. The efficiency of power consumption by using the present technique has also been revealed.
