    Description: ISEE-3 Geotail observations are used to investigate the relationship between the interplanetary magnetic field, substorm activity, and the distant magnetotail. Magnetic field and plasma observations are used to present evidence for the existence of a quasi-permanent, curved reconnection neutral line in the distant tail. The distance to the neutral line varies from absolute value of X = 120 to 140 R/sub e near the center of the tail to beyond absolute value of X = 200 R/sub e at the flanks. Downstream of the neutral line the plasma sheet magnetic field is shown to be negative and directly proportional to negative B/sub z in the solar wind as observed by IMP-8. V/sub x in the distant plasma sheet is also found to be proportional to IMF B/sub z with southward IMF producing the highest anti-solar flow velocities. A global dayside reconnection efficiency of 20 +- 5% is derived from the ISEE-3/IMP-8 magnetic field comparisons. Substorm activity, as measured by the AL index, produces enhanced negative B/sub z and tailward V/sub x in the distant plasma sheet in agreement with the basic predictions of the reconnection-based models of substorms. The rate of magnetic flux transfer out of the tail as a function of AL is found to be consistent with previous near-Earth studies. Similarly, the mass and energy fluxes carried by plasma sheet flow down the tail are consistent with theoretical mass and energy budgets for an open magnetosphere. In summary, the ISEE-3 Geotail observations appear to provide good support for reconnection models of solar wind-magnetosphere coupling and substorm energy rates.

    Notes: We investigated the actions of human placental lactogen (HPL) and human growth hormone (HGH) on [3H]thymidine incorporation and the release of immunoassyable somatomedin-C (SM-C) by isolated myoblasts, dermal fibroblasts, and costal cartilage explants taken from human fetuses, at 11-21 weeks of gestation. The incorporation of [3H] thymidine by myoblasts and fibroblasts was significantly increased after incubation for 20 hr or 44 hr, and cell number after incubation for 7 days, in the presence of 50-250 ng/ml HPL. Incubation with HPL did not increase [3H]thymidine incorporation into cartilage explants, whereas incubation with HGH failed to enhance the uptake of this isotope by any of the tissues. Following extraction with acid-ethanol, culture medium conditioned by exposure to myoblasts or fibroblasts for 44 hr, and to cartilage explants for 7 days, contained radioimmunoassayable SMC. Myoblast-conditioned medium contained significantly more SM-C [1,609 ± 953 mU/mg cell protein (mean ± SD) n = 10] than did that conditioned by fibroblasts (637 ± 323; n = 5; P 〈 0.02). In 1 week of culture, cartilage explants released 4.1 ± 1.1 mU/mg wet weight (n = 7). The release of immunoassayable SM-C from cultured cells was significantly increased in the presence of 250 ng/ml HPL in five of eight experiments with myoblasts and two of four experiments with fibroblasts. Neither fibroblasts or myoblasts showed increased SM-C release following exposure to HGH.The results suggest that HPL, but not HGH, is growth-promoting for some human fetal tissues in vitro and that this action is mediated, at least in part, by an increased release of somatomedins.

    Notes: We recently derived a series of transformed cell lines by transfecting mouse bone marrow cells highly enriched for macrophage progenitors with a newly described human gene, R-myc, which has homology to the c-myc oncogene. In this report, we show that these lines share some features characteristic of cells of the mononuclear phagocyte lineage. Specifically, all cell lines had macrophage-or monocytelike morphology, contained nonspecific esterase, were phagocytic for latex beads, secreted lysozyme, bore the Mac-1 antigen, and contained a minority of cells with Fc receptors. However, only a single monocytelike clone had appreciable numbers of cells which bore complement receptor 1, and none were phagocytic for antibody or complementcoated particles, or constitutively secreted Interleukin-1. All these cell lines secreted a growth factor capable of supporting the in vitro proliferation of bone marrow macrophages. Radiommunoassay and receptor binding studies indicate that this factor is colony stimulating factor 1.

    Description: A survey of the approx. 1 MeV/nucleon heavy ion abundances in 66 He3-rich solar particle events was performed using the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland and Goddard Space Flight Center instruments on the ISEE-3 spacecraft. The observations were carried out in interplanetary space over the period 1978 October through 1982 June. Earlier observations were confirmed which show an enrichment of heavy ions in HE3-rich events, relative to the average solar energetic particle composition in large particle events. For the survey near 1.5 MeV/nucleon the enrichments compared to large solar particle events are approximately He4:C:O:Ne:Mg:Si:Fe = 0.44:0.66:1.:3.4:3.5:4.1:9.6. Surprising new results emerging from the present broad survey are that the heavy ion enrichment pattern is the same within a factor of approx. 2 for almost all cases, and the degree of heavy ion enrichment is uncorrelated with the He3 enrichment. Overall, the features established appear to be best explained by an acceleration mechanism in which the He3 enrichment process is not responsible for the heavy ion enrichment, but rather the heavy ion enrichment is a measure of the ambient coronal composition at the sites where the He3-rich events occur.

    Description: A search has been made in the polar regions of the sun for large-scale (50-200 Mm) velocity fields with lifetimes of the order of the solar rotation period (approximately equal to or greater than 30 days). The observations show that any such large-scale, long-lived velocity patterns in the polar regions must have an amplitude less than 5 m/s. Marginally significant detections (at the 2-3 sigma level) were made of two kinds of structures with amplitudes of order 3 m/s. One has a rotation period approximately 38 days (close to the polar rotation period at the sun's surface), and a scale approximately 150 Mm; the other has a period approximately 24 days and a scale approximately 100 Mm. Tentatively, the first structure is interpreted as being of supergranular origin. The second structure is interpreted as the overshooting of the dominant convective mode of the lower solar convection zone - the giant granulation.

    Description: The 3He-rich flares show a tendency to be enriched in heavy ions, and that this enrichment covers the charge range through Fe. The discovery of this association was responsible, in part, for the discarding of 3He enrichment models which involved spallation or thermonuclear reactions, since such models were unable to produce heavy nuclei enhancement. Results of a survey of heavy nucleus abundances observed in 66 3He-rich flares which occurred over the period October 1978 to June 1982 are presented.

    Description: A survey of 50 electron energy spectra from .1 to 100 MeV originating from solar flares was made by the combination of data from two spectrometers onboard the International Sun Earth Explorer-3 spacecraft. The observed spectral shapes of flare events can be divided into two classes through the criteria of fit to an acceleration model. This standard two step acceleration model, which fits the spectral shape of the first class of flares, involves an impulsive step that accelerates particles up to 100 keV and a second step that further accelerates these particles up to 100 MeV by a single shock. This fit fails for the second class of flares that can be characterized as having excessively hard spectra above 1 MeV relative to the predictions of the model. Correlations with soft X-ray and meter radio observations imply that the acceleration of the high energy particles in the second class of flares is dominated by the impulsive phase of the flares.

    Description: Images in 3.5-30 keV X-rays obtained during the first few minutes of seven solar flares show rapid motions. In each case X-ray emission first appeared at one end of a magnetic field structure, and then propagated along the field at a velocity between 800 and 1700 km/s. The observed X-ray structures were 45,000-230,000 km long. Simultaneous H-alpha images were available in three cases; they showed brightenings when the fast-moving fronts arrived at the chromosphere. The fast-moving fronts are interpreted as electron thermal conduction fronts since their velocities are consistent with conduction at the observed temperatures of 1-3 x 10 to the 7th K. The inferred conductive heat flux of up to 10-billion ergs/s sq cm accounts for most of the energy released in the flares, implying that the flares were primarily thermal phenomena.
