    Notes: The chain entanglement states in high density, linear low density, and low density polyethylenes (HDPE, LLDPE, and LDPE) have been modified by recovering the polymers from solutions in trichlorobenzene (TCB) and p-xylene. In the thermodynamically good solvent, TCB, the entanglement density is assumed to be sharply reduced, a condition which is carried over to the corresponding solids. These display transient, but large increments in tensile moduli, slight changes in stress at rupture, and decreases in dynamic mechanical parameters and in elongation at rupture. Scanning calorimetry also shows these solids to have reduced crystallinity. Much smaller property modifications are noted in corresponding samples recovered from p-xylene. This liquid is a poorer solvent, particularly for HDPE and LLDPE. The results indicate that property modifications due to deliberate changes in the entanglement states of the polymers are a general phenomenon in the polyethylenes, and the magnitude of property changes depends on parameters of the molecular weight distribution. Chain branching does not seem to be a leading factor in the sensitivity of properties to modifications in the entanglement states. The property modifications produced by the present solution treatments are viewed as guides to the magnitude and duration of shear refining effects to be expected in HDPE, LLDPE, and LDPE polymers.

    Notes: The flow of polymer melts in a rotating disc extruder is analyzed with the development of a mathematical model for drag flow in a contoured rotating disc. The model assumes a fully melted material which exhibits Newtonian flow behavior under isothermal conditions. Flow is evaluated in successive sections of the flow path, and the drag flow component is calculated by assuming a zero pressure gradient by analogy to the analysis of single screw extruder performance. The final expression involves a computer-assisted numerical solution. Results of the drag flow model are presented for three different disc geometries. A mathematical model of negative flow, and a comparison of the results with experimental data will be presented in followup papers.

It is assumed that the material is fully melted and exhibits Newtonian flow behavior under isothermal conditions for each element. Flow is evaluated in successive sections of the flow path and the final expression involves a computer-assisted numerical solution. Pressure flow, which is negative, is calculated by analyzing the situation in which the pressure gradient causes the extrudable material to flow back across the stationary disc. A simplified geometrical model is developed for numerical solution, assuming incompressible flow. Leakage flow is between the contours of the disc and the engaging interior face of the housing. The flow is also directed opposite to the drag component and is estimated by using parallel plate flow equations.

    Notes: The highest temperature at which molecular weight distributions can be characterized by current techniques is 145°C. Supermolecular aggregates may exist at this temperature in polypropylene solutions in trichlorobenzene and other solvents. Dissolution procedures at higher temperatures are ineffective in this case because of the limited thermal stability of polypropylene. Aggregate-free solutions can be prepared, however, by controlling storage times at 145°C in mixtures with added stabilizers. Low angle laser light scattering measurements can be used to determine when true solutions have been produced. This occurs when measured second virial coefficients agree with values predicted for the Mw measured in the light scattering experiment. GPC-LALLS measurements of Mw and Mz provide similar information about the effects of storage time on dissolution of aggregates and polymer degradation.

    Notes: Plasticized compounds of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) have been prepared using PVC polymer as supplied and as recovered from solutions in tetrahydrofuran. Mechanical properties and melt elasticity measurements were found to vary significantly among these compounds. It is proposed that the solid-state characteristics and melt elasticity parameters in these compounds depend on the state of chain entanglement and that the entanglement state can be modified significantly by procedures such as used here. Annealing experiments have shown that the rates of attaining property equilibria - symptomatic of equilibrium entanglement states - are dependent on diffusion processes. Neither solution-modified nor control PVC compounds are in steady states when first tested; consequently, time-dependent property variations may be expected as morphological steady states are attained at conventional use temperatures for PVC compounds. The present study extends to PVC the principles of entanglement network modification through solution, or shearing processes, as a means of selecting preferred property balances in melt processing and mechanical properties. That principle had earlier been shown to apply to polyethylenes.

    Notes: Molecular weight distributions, long chain branching frequency, and solution viscosities of samples of commercial poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are reported. The PVA was fully reacetylated to poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) for characterizations by size exclusion chromatography using a low angle light scattering detector. The Mark-Houwink constants for PVAc in toluene were determined to be K = 0.106 cm3 g-1 and α = 0.59, at 25°C. Long chain branching frequency in the commercial PVAs studied was small and was little affected by polymer molecular weight. Some 95% or more of the branches in these species were short. Aqueous solutions at 10% (w/v) of PVA were Newtonian. The polymers examined differed in chemical composition, molecular weight distributions, and mean block lengths of vinyl acetate residues. Variations in a single characteristic, like a solution or intrinsic viscosity, cannot be used to deduce structural differences between PVAs.

    Notes: A single screw extruder was used to impose different shear histories on a low density polyethylene with broad molecular weight distribution and high molecular weight tail that had very little long chain branching. This polymer exhibits relatively high melt elasticity and the viscoelastic properties of its melt are strongly affected by preshearing. Such changes are accomplished without significant changes in molecular weight distribution or chemical structure. Measured viscous and elastic properties of the melt are different from piston-driven and screw extruder capillary rheometers. Shear modification effects in single screw extruders are enhanced by decreasing melt temperature, increased screw rotation speeds, and higher screw compression ratios. Melt elasticity can be cycled between high and relatively low values, for the particular polymer, by annealing or shearing the polymer melt.

    Notes: Several compatibilizing agents were investigated to stabilize blends of rigid poly(vinyl chloride) and polystyrene. Copolymers of alpha-methyl-sytrene and methacrylonitrile were made by emulsion polymerization. These products, with alpha-methylstyrene contents varying between 50 and 75 weight percent, could be blended with the two primary polymers to produce alloys with good processability and strength. Styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers with 70 and 75 percent styrene content were also found to provide useful polyblends. All mixtures were opaque. Compositions containing at least 30 weight percent PVC were self-extingushing. Polystyrene-poly(vinyl chloride) mixtures with as little as 7.5 weight percent styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer appear to have adequate mechanical strength and processability for commercial applications. Some end-uses for variations of these polyblends are suggested.
