    Notes: Abstract Spherical accretion onto black holes at high accretion rates leads to temperatures and optical depths for which Comptonization of the emerging radiation plays an important role, altering both the plasma temperature and the emergent spectrum. In this paper the nonlocal effects of Comptonization are accounted for by numerically modeling the scattering process with Monte Carlo techniques. Calculations are performed for black hole masses ranging from 101–109 M ⊙ and are compared with the local scattering model of Ipser and Price (1983). It is found that the local scattering approximation underestimates the energy in the X-ray portion of the spectrum. Monte Carlo calculations shows that the spectrum flattens and the spectral index decreases to values about 20% below those obtained by using the local scattering approximation.

The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by block-diagonal matrix least squares to a finalR value of 0.038. Both calcium atoms are seven coordinate. The $$\overline {P - O_T } $$ distance is 1.510(6) Å, whereas the $$\overline {P - O_B } $$ distance is 1.619(1) Å and the P-OB-P angle is 125.9(1)°.

    Notes: Abstract Recursive linear hashing is a hashing technique proposed for files which can grow and shrink dynamically. The scheme is an extension of linear hashing, a method originally proposed by Litwin, but unlike Litwin's scheme, it does not require conventional overflow pages. In this paper, we investigate the application of recursive linear hashing to partial match retrieval problems. Consistent with the results for primary key retrieval, recursive linear hashing performs better than the conventional scheme on these problems, especially at high load factors.

    Notes: Abstract Litetimes of six individual rotational levels in theν=0 vibrational level of the3 π g state of C2 were measured by monitoring the fluorescent decay after pulsed laser excitation. A value of 92±5 ns was obtained, 25% lower than previous measurements. The corresponding oscillator strength for the Swan (0-0) band isf 00=0.032±0.002, in agreement with recent theoretical work.

    Notes: Abstract A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7µ+ e -, 35±7µ+µ- events from $$\bar v$$ interactions, and 32±7µ-µ+ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, µ-µ- e + and µ-µ-µ+. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Limits to prompt like sign µ+ e +, µ+µ+ and µ-µ- signals are given and compared with other experiments and with theoretical calculations.

    Notes: Abstract This investigation describes five Mesozoic dolerite dikes which intrude Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Inner Piedmont of western South Carolina. The dikes are vertical or nearly so and strike approximately N40° W. Three major northeast-trending faults also occur in the study area. Left lateral displacement of one dolerite is documented at a locality near Cleveland, South Carolina. Elsewhere, several of the dolerite dikes appear to terminate at or near the faults. — The dolerite dikes have subophitic to microporphyritic textures and consist principally of plagioclase (generally An70–80), olivine (dominantly Fo80–90) and augite with subordinate pigeonite, titanomagnetite, chromite and brown, partly glassy mesostasis. In one dike pyroxene compositions trend from augite to ferroaugite in contrast to an augite→subcalcic augite→pigeonite trend characteristic of the other dolerites. The contrasting trends primarily result from differences in SiO2 abundance in the dolerite magmas. — Major and trace element analyses indicate the presence of two different olivine-normative dolerite magma types. The two magma types are not related by near surface crystal fractionation. Models for genesis of the olivine-normative dolerite magmas by partial melting of a plagioclase peridotite upper mantle source region are presented. The models require that the source region be enriched in LREE and incompatible elements such as Rb, Ba, Hf and Th relative to Cl chondritic abundances. One magma type appears to represent a primary dolerite magma that ascended from the source region with little subsequent compositional change. The second magma type most likely experienced assimilation of clinopyroxene-garnet (eclogite) during ascent, thereby acquiring a REE pattern with a less steep negative slope for the LREE and a slight positive slope in the HREE.

    Notes: Abstract We measured the average soft X-ray emission from coronal holes observed on images obtained during AS & E rocket flights from 1974 to 1981. The variation of this emission over the solar cycle was then compared with photospheric magnetic flux measurements within coronal holes over the same period. We found that coronal hole soft X-ray emission could be detected and that this emission appeared to increase with the rise of the sunspot cycle from activity minimum to maximum. Our quantitative results confirmed previous suggestions that the coronal brightness contrast between holes and large-scale structure decreased during this period of the cycle. Gas pressures at the hole base were estimated for assumed temperatures and found to vary from about 0.03 dyne cm−2 in 1974 to 0.35 dyne cm−2 in 1981. The increase in coronal hole X-ray emission was accompanied by a similar trend in the surface magnetic flux of near-equatorial holes between 1975 and 1980 (Harvey et al., 1982).

    Notes: Abstract To study the formation and development of coronal holes, their association with X-ray bright points has been investigated. The areal density of X-ray bright points was measured within the boundaries of coronal holes and was found to increase linearly with time for each of the three, long-lived, equatorial coronal holes of the Skylab era. Analysis of the data shows that the effect is not the result of global changes in bright point number and is therefore a property of the restricted longitude region which contains the coronal hole. The bright point density at the time of the hole's formation was also measured and, although the result is more uncertain, was found to be similar to the bright point number over the solar surface. No association was found between bright points and the rate of change of coronal hole area.
