Notes: Abstract This investigation describes five Mesozoic dolerite dikes which intrude Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Inner Piedmont of western South Carolina. The dikes are vertical or nearly so and strike approximately N40° W. Three major northeast-trending faults also occur in the study area. Left lateral displacement of one dolerite is documented at a locality near Cleveland, South Carolina. Elsewhere, several of the dolerite dikes appear to terminate at or near the faults. — The dolerite dikes have subophitic to microporphyritic textures and consist principally of plagioclase (generally An70–80), olivine (dominantly Fo80–90) and augite with subordinate pigeonite, titanomagnetite, chromite and brown, partly glassy mesostasis. In one dike pyroxene compositions trend from augite to ferroaugite in contrast to an augite→subcalcic augite→pigeonite trend characteristic of the other dolerites. The contrasting trends primarily result from differences in SiO2 abundance in the dolerite magmas. — Major and trace element analyses indicate the presence of two different olivine-normative dolerite magma types. The two magma types are not related by near surface crystal fractionation. Models for genesis of the olivine-normative dolerite magmas by partial melting of a plagioclase peridotite upper mantle source region are presented. The models require that the source region be enriched in LREE and incompatible elements such as Rb, Ba, Hf and Th relative to Cl chondritic abundances. One magma type appears to represent a primary dolerite magma that ascended from the source region with little subsequent compositional change. The second magma type most likely experienced assimilation of clinopyroxene-garnet (eclogite) during ascent, thereby acquiring a REE pattern with a less steep negative slope for the LREE and a slight positive slope in the HREE.

Notes: Abstract A number of recent studies have analyzed whether there is a political influence on monetary policy, focusing primarily on whether monetary policy becomes “easier” just prior to elections. In addition to exploring whether there exists an election period cycle in monetary policy, this article explores the existence of another political influence on policy. Following up on some recent anecdotal evidence provided by John T. Woolley, this article explores whether incumbent FED chairmen have succeeded in influencing monetary policy in order to improve their reappointment chances. The analysis, which spans the administrations of seven U.S. presidents and four FED chairmen, finds no conclusive evidence that FED policy changes systematically either before elections or chairman reappointment dates. The analysis has implications for the issue of rules versus discretion in monetary policy.

Notes: [Auszug] The haemoglobins in S. inaequivalvis are formed from three distinct polypeptide chains, two of which associate to form heterotetramers (A2, B2), while a third associates to form homodimers5. The dimers and tetramers bind oxygen cooperatively with Hill coefficients of 1.5 and 2.1, respectively6. The ...

Notes: [Auszug] BOYD1 recently suggested an explanation of Hund's rule in terms of electron correlation. A previous investigation of this approach2 gave rise to a richer interpretation of two-electron spectra in terms of an alternating rule, in place of the usual Hund rule first noted by Russell and Meggers3 for ...

Notes: Summary Among women with 46,XY gonadal dysgenesis, there is a high incidence of gonadal tumors. Because of evidence of a connection between occurrence of those tumors, H-Y phenotype, and breast development, we surveyed 55 cases of 46,X gonadal dysgenesis and 12 related cases involving chromosomal and/or skeletal abnormalities. Our survey, including three new cases presented here, indicates that H-Y phenotype but not breast development may be related to the development of the gonadoblastoma-dysgerminoma. Thus among women with 46,XY gonadal dysgenesis, there are H-Y− and H-Y+ classes, but gonadal tumors are found almost exclusively in the H-Y+ class. Yet one of our patients may represent an exception to the association of H-Y+ phenotype and gonadal tumors in this syndrome.

Notes: Abstract Solutions of ten and eleven dimensional supergravity are presented for which the space-time metric is a product of an anti-de Sitter metric and a strictly positive scalar function of the internal coordinates. The critical point of the potential of seven dimensional maximal supergravity with SO(4) symmetry is identified with such a solution.

Notes: Abstract In a comparative study of A/J (Gpi-1a) and C57BL/6J (Gpi-1b) mice, we observed that erythrocytes of A/J mice exhibited significantly higher glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) activity compared to erythrocytes of C57BL/6J mice on a per cell, per gram of protein, or per gram of hemoglobin basis. Higher GPI activity per cell was detected for peripheral blood lymphocytes of A/J compared to C57BL/6J mice. (A/J × C57BL/6J)F1 mice expressed erythrocyte and peripheral blood lymphocyte GPI activities intermediate to those of the parental mouse strains. The GPI activities of spleen lymphocytes from A/J, C57BL/6J, or (A/J × C57BL/6J)F1 mice were not significantly different from each other. The higher activity in the A/J mice could be due to GPI of a higher catalytic rate or to the presence of more GPI molecules. In order to distinguish these two possibilities, GPI was purified to homogeneity from both strains of mice. The specific activities (activity per milligram of protein) of the purified enzymes from the two strains were found to be similar, indicating that GPI from the A/J strain was not a more active enzyme. Antibody to the purified enzymes was prepared and used in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to compare the relative amounts of enzyme molecules in cells of A/J and C57BL/6J mice. Results of the ELISA tests on peripheral blood lymphocytes indicated that A/J mice contain more molecules of GPI per cell and, therefore, have a higher GPI activity than C57BL/6J mice.
