    Description: A new method to attack the question of the 'missing' globular clusters in the bulge of M31 is used. Image-processing techniques were used on 13 videocamera fields to obtain an accurate photometric census of stellar objects in M31's bulge down to a limiting B magnitude of 21. This luminosity distribution is compared with the Bahcall-Soneira model of galactic foreground stars. A statistically significant excess of bright images in the luminosity range of globular clusters at M31's distance is found. If the optical candidates considered prove to be globular clusters, they would double the number of known globular clusters in the surveyed region. The colors of a subsample of the candidates are the same as those of the known globular clusters. It is concluded that the previously observed flattening away from a de Vaucouleurs law in the radial distribution of M31 may be an observational selection effect. As an offshoot of this analysis, no evidence is found for very luminous stars in the inner bulge of M31. The lack of such stars indicates that there has not been active star formation (with a normal IMF) in the recent past. Coupled with the existence of many planetary nebulae in the bulge, this may strengthen the case for a galactic wind in M31's bulge.

    Description: For the fist time, a time-dependent model is described which includes the role of grains in the production of molecules in dense clouds including ion-molecule gas phase chemistry. The approach provides information regarding the coupling between the two phases. Although the coupling between the two chemistries is extremely strong, the two domains maintain their own identities. While H2O, CH4, and NH3 are made efficiently, with a high production rate on grains and released back to the gas phase, the gas phase is essentially responsible for the formation of CO, a very stable molecule which may or may not react on grains with atomic oxygen and may or may not form CO2.

    Description: Near-simultaneous measurements in 11 wavebands between 1 micron and 2 mm of a sample of 13 'blazars' are presented. These measurements represent the first comprehensive attempt to determine the infrared-to-millimeter-wave properties of this class of object, which emit the bulk of their luminosity in the far-infrared region. Most of the sources have very flat millimeter/submillimeter spectra up to the highest observed frequency. However, 3C 279 and 3C 446 show evidence of turnovers in their submillimeter spectra. The 1-4 micron spectra can be characterized by simple power laws, all steeper than -0.9; several sources, however, show evidence of spectral beaks in the 10-20 micron region, suggestive of energy losses. It is shown that the spectral properties are consistent with synchrotron emission from relativistic jets aligned close to the line of sight and the observations are discussed in relation to such models.

    Description: The imaging proportional counter on the Einstein Observatory has been used to search for X-ray emission from 13 nearby E and S0 galaxies with compact nuclear radio sources. Five galaxies with X-ray luminosity of about 10 to the 41st ergs/s were detected, and one of them was resolved. These galaxies and a few similar ones observed by others are compared to a sample of radio-quiet E and S0 galaxies. The radio-emitting galaxies have consistently greater X-ray luminosities per unit of optical luminosity than most radio-quiet galaxies. Possible emission mechanisms and models for the resolved source, for the most powerful source, and for the class of E/S0 galaxies with active nuclei are discussed.

    Description: Under some conditions, time series of the interplanetary magnetic field strength and components have the properties of fractal curves. Magnetic field measurements made near 8.5 AU by Voyager 2 from June 5 to August 24, 1981 were self-similar over time scales from approximately 20 sec to approximately 3 x 100,000 sec, and the fractal dimension of the time series of the strength and components of the magnetic field was D = 5/3, corresponding to a power spectrum P(f) approximately f sup -5/3. Since the Kolmogorov spectrum for homogeneous, isotropic, stationary turbulence is also f sup -5/3, the Voyager 2 measurements are consistent with the observation of an inertial range of turbulence extending over approximately four decades in frequency. Interaction regions probably contributed most of the power in this interval. As an example, one interaction region is discussed in which the magnetic field had a fractal dimension D = 5/3.

    Description: The detection of interstellar Na D absorption lines at a local standard of rest (LSR) velocity of -85 km/s is reported, together with tentative detections of further Na D lines at -133 km/s and -110 km/s, in the spectrum of the RR Lyrae star BT Draconis which lies toward the high-velocity neutral hydrogen complex C (LSR velocity around -115 km/s). This suggests an upper limit of 2.1 kpc on the distance to this high-velocity complex, and indicates that the complex has near-cosmic metallicity. This result strongly favors either a model in which complex C is formed by infalling material in the halo, which has originated in the Galactic disk, or one in which it is part of a large relatively local shell structure.

    Description: The Solar Maximum Mission satellite's gamma-ray spectrometer has detected a line near 1.81 MeV in each of the three years (1980-1982) over which the Galactic center traversed the broad aperture of that instrument. No significant intensity variation is noted over this period. The Galactic center/anticenter intensity ratio is greater than 2.5, and the center of the emission is noted to be consistent with the location of the Galactic center. For an assumed source distribution which follows the more than 100 MeV Galactic gamma radiation, the total flux in the direction of the Galactic center and the measured energy of the line are consistent with the detection of a narrow gamma-ray line from interstellar Al-26 by HEAO 3 in 1979-1980.

    Description: For each of the six galaxies whose mm-wavelength emission of CO and C-13O were observed from both the center and the disk, and the ratio of integrated intensities P(CO)/P(C-13O) is noted to vary markedly from galactic center to galactic center, from galactic disk to galactic disk, and from point to point within a given galaxy. The observed integrated intensity ratios vary from 3 to 16, indicating that the use of a constant P(CO) to sigma(H2) conversion to derive H2 surface densities from extragalactic CO observations can produce major errors.

    Description: The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 was discovered during a photographic search carried out with the 0.5 meter Carnegie Double Astrograph at Lick Observatory and the Lowell Observatory PDS microdensitometer. Such a search was stimulated by the curious fact that few favorably located occultations of AGK3 or SAO catalog starts by Ceres will occur during the 1980s. The occultation on 13 November, however, is a particularly good event. The star is 1000 cubic M in V, yielding a predicted drop at occultation of about 10%. Such a drop can be detected by small telescopes equipped with photoelectric photometers, but is too small to be seen visually. The track was predicted to cross the Caribbean, Florida, southern Texas, and Mexico. Based on this prediction, preparations were made to observe the event in Mexico using four portable occultation data systems.

    Description: The VLA interferometer has been used to obtain 5 GHz continuum observations of the galactic H II regions W48, G25.4 - 0.2S, G8.1 + 0.2, and G89.1 + 1.3, at less than 6-arcsec spatial resolution. From the source maps presented, H II region physical parameters are derived and tentative models for the G25.4-0.2S H II region, employing the VLA radio interferometric map and available IR data, are discussed.
