Beschreibung: Motivated by recent work which hints at a possible deficiency of hydrogen in non-Mira N-type carbon stars and to further explore the parameter space of chemical composition, computations have been made of a series of hydrogen-deficient models for carbon stars. For these models Teff = 3000 K, and log g = 0.0. Solar abundances are used for all elements except for carbon (which is enhanced to give C/O = 1.05), hydrogen, and helium. As the fractional abundance of hydrogen is decreased, being replaced by helium, the temperature-optical depth relation is affected only slightly, but the temperature-pressure relation is changed. The most striking change in the emergent flux is the decrease of the H(-) peak at 1.65 micron compared with the blackbody peak at 1.00 micron.

Beschreibung: The angular distribution and local concentration of interstellar Al-26 are calculated for five theoretical models of its origin, as a guide for future observations. The models considered relate Al-26 to current star formation (with surface CO density as its indicator), treat Al-26 as a secondary-nucleosynthesis product on seed nuclei with the same metallicity gradient as O, assume the Al-26 ejection rate is proportional to present light output, make Al-26 synthesis depend on total H I + H2 gas density, or assume that Al-26 is formed mainly in novae. The local decay and production rates for the five models are found to lie within a factor of 2 of surface density 0.0003/sq cm s, corresponding to a present (Al-26)/(Al-27) ratio of 5 x 10 to the -6th averaged over H I and H2 phases.

Beschreibung: The support of previous SAS 3 spacecraft observations by new data gathered by the Monitor Proportional Counter aboard the HEAO 2 spacecraft indicates that the pulse period history of the 13.5 sec-pulsing X-ray source LMC X-4 is consistent with standard accretion and torque models only if LMC X-4 is a fast rotator for which the accretion torques nearly cancel. This result leads to a neutron star magnetic field strength estimate of about 1.2 x 10 to the 13th G. Strong evidence is noted for Her X-1's status as a fast rotator, while SMC X-1 is probably an intermediate-to-fast rotator. In the context of slaved disk models for these objects, it is noted that the precession periods expected for the companion stars are significantly longer than the observed 1-2 month time scales; slaved disk models are thereby undermined.

Beschreibung: Spectroscopy from 4 to 13 microns of the visual reflection nebulae NGC 7023 and NGC 2023 has been obtained. These data, together with previous work from 1 to 4 microns, show that the spectra of these sources consist of a relatively flat continuum from 1 to 13 microns and six emission features at 3.3, 3.4, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 microns. The observations rule out equilibrium thermal emission for the features and continuum in reflection nebulae, and point toward a nonequilibrium emission mechanism such as thermal emission from thermally fluctuating small grains or fluorescence from large molecules. The similarity of the emission feature spectra in reflection nebulae to those in other sources suggests a universal emission mechanism, thus implying nonequilibrium emission mechanisms in other sources.

Beschreibung: Our program of VJHK colorimetric observations and spectrophotometry is reviewed and updated. Attention is given to the probable connections between VJHK colors and the ratios of bright ices and dark soils on many outer solar system small bodies' surfaces. VJHK color systematics may clarify ice/soil behaviors in bodies too faint for high resolution spectra. Comets appear colored by soils most closely resembling D-class Trojan asteroid soils. Our recent model of comet surface properties, involving weakly-bonded ice/soil regoliths, helps explain comet eruptive phenomena. The work suggests the importance of considering ices in the context of their intimate mixture with non-volatile soils.

Beschreibung: Evidence of a possible supernova explosion that occured very near the Earth is presented by the presence of radioactive 26 Aluminum (26 Al). The time of the supernova explosion is placed at approximately 100,000 years ago and is partially supported by cosmic gamma ray measurements from both HEAO 3 and the Solar Maximum Mission.

Beschreibung: Further analysis of Einstein Observatory images of the Vela pulsar has revealed additional detail in the X-ray emission of the central region of the Vela supernova remnant. Components previously reported from the Einstein data are: (1) filaments within the approximately 5-degree remnant; (2) a reasonably strong (approximately 1.7 ct/sec) point-like source coincident with the pulsar; and (3) a cloud of diffuse emission about the pulsar position. Image processing of IPC data has now revealed a region of lower surface brightness emission extending as far as about 1 degree, primarily to the south of the pulsar and in the direction of the radio emission maximum known as Vela X.

Beschreibung: Initial results are presented for a program to survey highly ionized gas in the Milky Way disk and halo. High-resolution IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) far-UV spectra were obtained for 12 stars at galactocentric distances less than 6 kpc. The stars are 0.7-2.2 kpc away from the plane. Most of the spectra contain exceedingly strong and broad interstellar absorption lines of weakly and highly ionized atoms. In addition to the normally strong lines of Si IV and C IV, strong interstellar NV lines have been detected in the spectra of eight stars. The detection of NV absorption (amounting to more than 10 times the predicted NV) provides an important new constraint on models for the origin of Galactic halo gas. A Galactic fountain operating in the presence of known UV and EUV radiation might explain the observations.

Beschreibung: The HEAO-1 satellite has produced the most complete, all-sky, X-ray survey. The sources extend to levels as faint as 1/2 Uhuru Flux Unit (UFU), with uncertain completeness below 1.25 UFU. Approximately 350 out of 840 sources have certain or highly probable optical counterparts. The identifications are necessary for estimating distances to the objects, so that properties are measured intrinsic to the source, and for establishing the classifications of the astronomical systems. There is also the opportunity to obtain TENMA and EXOSAT observations of X-ray spectra and time variability, since in general almost nothing is known of the X-ray characteristics of these weaker sources. Methods are here reviewed and the new active galactic nuclei X-ray counterparts are discussed.

Beschreibung: Comet 1983d was named IRAS-Araki-Alcock in honor of its codiscoverers, including the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) and two amateur astronomers. It is pointed out that the apparition of Comet 1983d was the closest cometary approach to earth since the development of modern astronomy. Because of the evolution of electromagnetic detector technology, a large range of ground-based observations of this object were possible. In the present investigation, attention is given to observations and some interpretations of the spectrum of Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock in the wavelength region from 1.5 to 20 microns. In addition to the observations made with a bolometer and discrete filters, spectrophotometric observations were made of the nuclear condensation of Comet 1983d in the 1.5- to 2.6-micron wavelength region at 5 percent resolution.
