Notes: Epicuticular wax synthesis by the primary leaf of Sorghum bicolor seedlings is inhibited when the germinating seeds are treated with 5 ppm metolachlor before germination. The composition of the free and esterified primary alcohols plus free and esterified fatty acids and aldehydes have been analysed. The predominant alcohol (75%) had 32 carbons while the 28- and 30-carbon homologues accounted for 78% of the fatty acids. Treatment of the germinating seeds with metolachlor strongly inhibited formation of the C28, C30 and C32 alcohols. Synthesis of C30 and C32 fatty acids was decreased while that of the C26 homologues was somewhat elevated. Simultaneous treatment of the germinating seed with metolachlor and the herbicide protectant CGA 43089 (α-[cyanomethoximino]-benzacetonitrile) resulted in normal wax synthesis. The results lead to the conclusion that the protectant prevents metolachlor from inhibiting synthesis of the dominating C28 to C30 chain-length constituents of the sorghum epicuticular wax.

Notes: Abstract The conformation of various basic poly (α-amino acid)s was investigated by CD measurements in aqueous solutions containing bis (2-ethylhexyl)sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) as well as in the AOT reversed micelles. The addition of AOT into an aqueous solution of poly(L-lysine) induces the conformational transition from coil to ordered structure, followed by aggregation. On the other hand, poly(L-lysine) assumesΒ-structure in the reversed micelles at low wovalue (wo=[H2O]/[AOT]). Similarly to poly(L-lysine), poly(L-ornithine) takes an ordered structure in the aqueous solution containing AOT andΒ-structure in the reversed micelles. In this case, however, these ordered structures are not so stable, compared with that of poly(L-lysine). Poly(L-arginine) undergoes the conformational transition from coil to helix by addition of AOT into the aqueous solution. Further addition of AOT allows transformation intoΒ-structure. Copoly(L-lysyl-L-leucine) with 63% leucine residue was shown to take a stable helical conformation even in pure water. In the reversed micelles, however, this ordered structure is significantly changed probably because the hydrophobic interaction among the leucyl residues is lowered in the reversed micelles.

Notes: Abstract The molecular conformations of poly(N5-dihydroxyethylaminopropyl-L-glutamine) and poly(N5-dihydroxyethyl-L-glutamine) were investigated in reversed micelles of AOT as well as in aqueous solutions. Both poly(α-amino acid)s assume disordered structures in pure water. The conformation of poly(N5-dihydroxyethylaminopropyl-L-glutamine) transits intoα-helix in the reversed micelles as the molar ratio of water to AOT (w0=[H2O]/[AOT]) becomes smaller. A similar conformational transition was also observed in aqueous solutions when a certain amount of AOT was added. Under these conditions, however, poly(N5-dihydroxyethyl-L-glutamine) did not undergo a conformational transition intoα-helix.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Selengehalt der Nahrung weist große regionale Unterschiede auf.
Notes: Summary The selenium content of food exhibits great regional differences. Food samples of infants and young children from the North Rhine-Westphalia State in the Fed. Rep. of Germany were analysed by instrumental neutron activation analysis and showed that the average selenium content of local vegetable and fruit is below 5 ng/g wet weight. Only samples of potatoes and bananas exhibit higher selenium contents. The bananas, probably imported from different areas of the world, show an extremely high variance with values between 4 and 164 ng Se/g. Commercially available ready-for-use meals for infants or young children have a low Se content (median 24 ng/g) which is comparable to cow's milk. Besides eggs, cereals enriched with milk and some other cereal products contain more than 100 ng Se/g.

Notes: Summary Heterogeneous collections of covalently-closed circular DNA (cccDNA) comprise up to 10% of the total DNA of H. halobium and four other halophilic strains (SB3, GRA, GRB and GN101) recently isolated from different sources. All of these bacteria have purple membrane, bacterioruberin and gas vacuoles as characteristic phenotypic markers. Most of the major cccDNA species of these isolates are not homologous to pHH1, the main 150 kb cccDNA of H. halobium NRC817. Only GN101 and SB3 have a cccDNA which is partly homologous to pHH1. In GN101 the homology is to the halobacterial insertion sequence ISH23 found in pHH1. In SB3 the homology is to ISH26, a new insertion sequence isolated from H. halobium NRC817 which has a size of 1,400 bp. Extensive homologies mologies exist between the minor cccDNA species in all five strains indicating that this cccDNA species is highly conserved and possibly originates from (or is part of) the chromosome. A 1.6 kb high copy number cccDNA species is present in three independently isolated GN101, GRB and SB3. This 1.6 kb cccDNA is not homologous to any other extrachromosomal or chromosomal DNA.

Notes: Thermal degradation of polystyrene (PS) was carried out in the absence of oxygen between 292 and 336°C. The formed volatile products were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively by means of gas charomatography. It was found that the composition of the volatile fraction is a function of conversion and independent of temperature for most of the products. A radical chain mechanism is proposed to explain these experimental results.

Notes: The influence of branching on the radius of gyration and the hydrodynamic radius of dextran macromolecules was studied by elastic and quasielastic light scattering (ELS and QELS). The hydrodynamic radius is more sensitive to low levels of branching than the radius of gyration. At higher branching levels a saturation of the hydrodynamic radius rh is observed, while the radius of gyration rG still changes distinctly. The ratio rG/rh proves to be a measure of the flexibility of the macromolecules; the latter is increasing with molecular weight for short linear chains and is decreasing with increasing degree of branching. Measurements were carried out in water (thermodynamically good solvent) and in ethylene glycol (under theta conditions) on four series of dextran fractions having rather narrow molecular weight distributions.
