    Notes: Abstract The change of the viscosity profile during the isothermal cure of a commercially available epoxy system commonly used as a matrix for high performance composites, TGDDM-DDS from CIBA, has been obtained by means of both a constant shear rate viscometer and a dynamic one. The range of temperature investigated varied from 120 up to 180°C. The increase of the molecular weight during the cure reaction is reflected on a macroscopic level in a progressive linear increase of the logarithm of the shear viscosity up to a critical point, near gelation, where an upturn is observed. The values of the time and viscosity at the critical point have been used to normalize the experimental data in a single generalized curve of the cure-viscosity profile. The William, Landel and Ferry equation has been found to adequately describe the temperature dependence of the viscosity for systems in the range of temperatures where the cure reaction did not occur. The apparent activation energy of the cure reaction, 19.7 Kcal/mole, obtained from the critical times, is consistent with calorimetric determinations.

    Notes: Internal cracking and microvoids are shown to form during room temperature storage of polycarbonate samples that have previously been exposed to boiling water. These microcracks or microvoids are actually disc-shaped pockets filled with water. This formation occurs due to the creation of water super-saturation conditions by cooling water-saturated specimens from 100°C to room temperature. As a result, water phase-separation, clustering, and microvoiding result and lead to deterioration of the mechanical properties. Visual healing of the microcracks is also sometimes observed at room temperature, especially under a dry atmosphere. Water from the water-filled pockets diffuses through the polycarbonate matrix to the external dry environment; the very thin emptied pockets then close and visually heal. This paper provides experimental data for the microvoiding process and clarifies the special mechanism of cracking/healing in polycarbonate samples.

    Notes: The cure behavior of commercial grade TGDDM-DDS mixtures of compositions ranging from 10 to 100 phr of hardener and the thermal polymerization of the epoxy component are analyzed by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameters and heats of reaction determined in isothermal and dynamic scans suggest that DDS primary amine addition and epoxide etherification dominate the cure reactions. The primary amine epoxide addition is characterized by overall heat of reaction (referred to the weight of the epoxy component) of 255 cal/g and by an activation energy of 16.6 kcal/mol. The corresponding values for the etherification reaction are, respectively, 170 cal/g and 41 kcal/mol. A method of derivation of the epoxide conversion from the heat evolved in DSC thermal scans of these systems is presented. The results are in good agreement with independent IR determinations. The steady shear and oscillatory viscosity measurements and the calorimetric analysis of the isothermal cure at 140°C, 160°C, and 180°C of a TGDDM-DDS mixture containing 35 phr of hardener indicate that gelation is principally governed by the primary amine addition. The gelation limits calculated in isothermal tests by combining the calorimetric analysis and the theory describing the nonlinear copolymerization of the tetrafunctional TGDDM with an essentially difunctional DDS were in good agreement with the values experimentally determined through rheological measurements.

    Notes: Randomly cross-linked copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate (HEMA) and methyl-methacrylate (MMA) have been prepared and studied in the dry and swollen state. Tensile and indentation tests indicate that by changing the composition of copolymers, it is possible to obtain materials with a wide range of mechanical properties and corresponding glass transition temperatures.
